Proverbi 23

1 Quando siedi a mangiare con uno che ha autorità, bada bene a ciò che ti è messo davanti;	1 When you sit down to eat with a ruler, observe carefully what is before you;
2 mettiti un coltello alla gola, se hai molto appetito.	2 and put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite.
3 Non bramare le sue ghiottonerie, perché sono un cibo fallace.	3 Do not desire his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.
4 Non affannarti per accumulare ricchezze, sii intelligente e rinuncia.	4 Do not toil to acquire wealth; be wise enough to desist.
5 Su di esse volano i tuoi occhi ma già non ci sono più: perché mettono ali come aquila e volano verso il cielo.	5 When your eyes light upon it, it is gone; for suddenly it takes to itself wings, flying like an eagle toward heaven.
6 Non mangiare il pane dell’avaro e non bramare le sue ghiottonerie,	6 Do not eat the bread of a man who is stingy; do not desire his delicacies;
7 perché, come uno che pensa solo a se stesso, ti dirà: «Mangia e bevi», ma il suo cuore non è con te.	7 for he is like one who is inwardly reckoning. "Eat and drink!" he says to you; but his heart is not with you.
8 Vomiterai il boccone che hai mangiato e rovinerai le tue parole gentili.	8 You will vomit up the morsels which you have eaten, and waste your pleasant words.
9 Non parlare agli orecchi di uno stolto, perché egli disprezzerà le tue sagge parole.	9 Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words.
10 Non spostare il confine antico, e non invadere il campo degli orfani,	10 Do not remove an ancient landmark or enter the fields of the fatherless;
11 perché il loro vendicatore è forte e difenderà la loro causa contro di te.	11 for their Redeemer is strong; he will plead their cause against you.
12 Apri il tuo cuore alla correzione e il tuo orecchio ai discorsi sapienti.	12 Apply your mind to instruction and your ear to words of knowledge.
13 Non risparmiare al fanciullo la correzione, perché se lo percuoti con il bastone non morirà;	13 Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you beat him with a rod, he will not die.
14 anzi, se lo percuoti con il bastone, lo salverai dal regno dei morti.	14 If you beat him with the rod you will save his life from Sheol.
15 Figlio mio, se il tuo cuore sarà saggio, anche il mio sarà colmo di gioia.	15 My son, if your heart is wise, my heart too will be glad.
16 Esulterò dentro di me, quando le tue labbra diranno parole rette.	16 My soul will rejoice when your lips speak what is right.
17 Non invidiare in cuor tuo i peccatori, ma resta sempre nel timore del Signore,	17 Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the LORD all the day.
18 perché così avrai un avvenire e la tua speranza non sarà stroncata.	18 Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.
19 Ascolta, figlio mio, e sii saggio e indirizza il tuo cuore sulla via retta.	19 Hear, my son, and be wise, and direct your mind in the way.
20 Non essere fra quelli che s’inebriano di vino né fra coloro che sono ingordi di carne,	20 Be not among winebibbers, or among gluttonous eaters of meat;
21 perché l’ubriacone e l’ingordo impoveriranno e di stracci li rivestirà la sonnolenza.	21 for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.
22 Ascolta tuo padre che ti ha generato, non disprezzare tua madre quando è vecchia.	22 Hearken to your father who begot you, and do not despise your mother when she is old.
23 Acquista la verità e non rivenderla, la sapienza, l’educazione e la prudenza.	23 Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.
24 Il padre del giusto gioirà pienamente, e chi ha generato un saggio se ne compiacerà.	24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who begets a wise son will be glad in him.
25 Gioiscano tuo padre e tua madre e si rallegri colei che ti ha generato.	25 Let your father and mother be glad, let her who bore you rejoice.
26 Fa’ bene attenzione a me, figlio mio, e piacciano ai tuoi occhi le mie vie:	26 My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways.
27 una fossa profonda è la prostituta, e un pozzo stretto la straniera.	27 For a harlot is a deep pit; an adventures is a narrow well.
28 Ella si apposta come un ladro e fra gli uomini fa crescere il numero dei traditori.	28 She lies in wait like a robber and increases the faithless among men.
29 Per chi i guai? Per chi i lamenti? Per chi i litigi? Per chi i gemiti? A chi le percosse per futili motivi? A chi gli occhi torbidi?	29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes?
30 Per quelli che si perdono dietro al vino, per quelli che assaporano bevande inebrianti.	30 Those who tarry long over wine, those who go to try mixed wine.
31 Non guardare il vino come rosseggia, come scintilla nella coppa e come scorre morbidamente;	31 Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly.
32 finirà per morderti come un serpente e pungerti come una vipera.	32 At the last it bites like a serpent, and stings like an adder.
33 Allora i tuoi occhi vedranno cose strane e la tua mente dirà cose sconnesse.	33 Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind utter perverse things.
34 Ti parrà di giacere in alto mare o di giacere in cima all’albero maestro.	34 You will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, like one who lies on the top of a mast.
35 «Mi hanno picchiato, ma non sento male. Mi hanno bastonato, ma non me ne sono accorto. Quando mi sveglierò? Ne chiederò dell’altro!».	35 "They struck me," you will say, "but I was not hurt; they beat me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake? I will seek another drink."
