| 1 Accadde poi un giorno che i figli di Dio vennero a presentarsi a Jahve e tra di loro andò anche Satana. | 1 But it happened that, on a certain day, when the sons of God had arrived and they stood before the Lord, Satan likewise arrived among them, and he stood in his sight. |
| 2 Jahve gli disse: « Donde vieni? ». Quegli rispose: « Da un giro sulla terra e da una passeggiata su di essa». | 2 So the Lord said to Satan, “Where do you come from?” Answering, he said, “I have circled the land, and walked around in it.” |
| 3 Jahve disse a Satana: « Hai fatto attenzione al mio servitore Giobbe? Non ce n’è uno come lui sulla terra, è uomo integro e retto,timorato di Dio e lontano dal male. Continua a restare attaccato alla sua integrità, e tu, senza ragione, mi hai eccitato contro di lui, per rovinarlo ». | 3 And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you not considered my servant, Job, that there is no one like him in the land, a simple and honest man, fearing God and withdrawing from evil, and still retaining his innocence? Yet you have stirred me against him, so that I would afflict him to no purpose.” |
| 4 Satana rispose a Jahve e disse: « Pelle per pelle! Tutto ciò che l’uomo ha dà per salvare la vita! | 4 Answering him, Satan said, “Skin for skin; and everything that a man has, he will give for his life. |
| 5 Ma stendi la mano e toccagli le ossa e la carne e poi vedrai se benedice la tua faccia! ». | 5 Yet send your hand and touch his bone and his flesh, and then you will see whether or not he blesses you to your face.” |
| 6 Jahve disse a Satana: « Eccolo nelle tue mani; soltanto risparmiagli la vita ». | 6 Therefore, the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand, but even so, spare his life.” |
| 7 Allora Satana si allontanò da Jahve e colpì Giobbe con un’ulcera maligna, dalla pianta dei piedi fino alla cima del capo. | 7 And so, Satan departed from the face of the Lord and he struck Job with a very serious ulcer from the sole of the foot all the way to the crown of his head. |
| 8 Giobbe prese un coccio per grattarsi e sedette in mezzo alla cenere. | 8 So he took a shard of earthenware and scraped the discharge, while sitting on a heap of refuse. |
| 9 Sua moglie gli disse: « Continui a restare attaccato alla tua integrità? Benedici Dio e muori! ». | 9 But his wife said to him, “Do you still continue in your simplicity? Bless God and die.” |
| 10 Ma Giobbe le rispose: «Tu parli come parlerebbe una scimunita: se accettiamo il bene da Dio, perchè non accetteremmo anche il male? ». In tutto questo Giobbe non peccò con le labbra. | 10 He said to her, “You have spoken like one of the foolish wives. If we accepted good things from the hand of God, why should we not accept bad things?” In all this, Job did not sin with his lips. |
| 11 Ora tre amici di Giobbe vennero a sapere tutte le disgrazie che gli erano sopraggiunte; partirono ognuno dalla propria località, Elifaz il Temanita, Bildad lo Shukhita e Zofar il Naamatita, convennero di andare per lamentarsi con lui e per consolarlo. | 11 And so, three friends of Job, hearing about all the evil that had befallen him, arrived, each one from his own place, Eliphaz the Themanite, and Baldad the Suhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. For they had agreed to come together to visit and console him. |
| 12 Alzarono gli occhi da lontano e non lo riconobbero; allora levarono grida e piansero, ognuno si stracciò il mantello e si cosparse il capo di polvere. | 12 And when they had raised up their eyes from a distance, they did not recognize him, and, crying out, they wept, and, tearing their garments, they scattered dust over their heads into the sky. |
| 13 Poi sedettero per terra accanto a lui per sette giorni e sette notti, senza dirgli una parola, perchè capivano che il dolore era troppo grande. | 13 And they sat with him on the ground for seven day and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his sorrow was very great. |
