1 Figliuolo di un anno era Saul, quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò due anni sopra Israele.	1 Saul was . . . years old when he became king, and reigned over Israel for . . . years.
2 E fece Saul la scelta di tre mila Israeliti: e due mila stavano con Saul in Machmas, e sul monte Bethel: e mille erano con Gionata in Gabaa di Beniamin: e rimandò tutto il resto del popolo ognuno alle sue tende.	2 Saul selected three thousand men of Israel; two thousand of them were with Saul at Michmash and inthe highlands of Bethel, and one thousand with Jonathan at Geba of Benjamin; the rest of the people Saul senthome, everyone to his tent.
3 E Gionata trucidò il presidio de' Filistei che era in Gabaa. E quando la nuova ne fu sparsa tra’ Filistei, Saul fece notificarla colle trombe per tutto il paese, dicendo: Sappiano gli Ebrei.	3 Jonathan kil ed the Philistine governor stationed at Gibeah and the Philistines were informed that theHebrews had risen in revolt. Saul had the trumpet sounded throughout the country,
4 E tutto Israele udì questa nuova: Saul ha distrutta la stazione de' Filistei: e Israele alzò la testa contro dei Filistei. Quindi è, che il popolo levò il grido dietro a Saul in Galgala.	4 and al Israel heard the news, 'Saul has kil ed the Philistine governor, and now Israel has antagonisedthe Philistines.' So all the people ral ied behind Saul at Gilgal.
5 E i Filistei misero insieme per combattere contro Israele trenta mila cocchi, e sei mila cavalli, e l’altra turba in tanto numero, quante son le arene del mare. E si mossero, e posero il campo a Machmas dalla parte orientale di Bethaven.	5 The Philistines mustered to make war on Israel, three thousand chariots, six thousand horse and aforce as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They came up and pitched camp at Michmash, to the east ofBeth-Aven.
6 Or in veggendo gli uomini d'Israele, come eran ridotti alle strette (perocché il popolo era disanimato) si nascosero nelle caverne, e nelle buche, e anche ne’ massi e nelle grotte, e nelle cisterne.	6 When the Israelites saw that their plight was desperate, being so hard pressed, the people hid incaves, in holes, in crevices, in vaults, in wel s.
7 E gli Ebrei passato il Giordano entrarono nella terra di Gad, e di Galaad. Ma mentre Saul era tuttora in Galgala, tutto il popolo che lo seguiva, s'impaurì.	7 Some also crossed the Jordan fords into the territory of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal and althe people who followed him were trembling.
8 E aspettò (Saul) sette giorni secondo l’ordine di Samuele, e non arrivò Samuele a Galgala: e il popolo alla spicciolata se ne andava da lui.	8 He waited for seven days, the period fixed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and thearmy, deserting Saul, began dispersing.
9 Disse adunque Saul: Menatemi l’olocausto, e l’ostia pacifica. E offerse l'olocausto.	9 Saul then said, 'Bring me the burnt offering and the communion sacrifices.' And he presented the burntoffering.
10 E finito che ebbe di offerir l'olocausto, ecco che veniva Samuele, e Saul gli uscì incontro per salutarlo.	10 Just as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to meet andgreet him.
11 E dissegli Samuele: Che hai tu fatto? Rispose Saul: Perchè io vidi che il popolo se n'andava alla spicciolata da me, e tu non eri giunto dentro i giorni stabiliti, e d'altra parte erano raunati i Filistei a Machmas,	11 Samuel said, 'What have you been doing?' Saul replied, 'I saw the army deserting me anddispersing, and you had not come at the time fixed, while the Philistines were mustering at Michmash.
12 Io dissi: Or ora verranno i Filistei contro di me a Galgala, e io non ho placato il Signore. Spinto da necessità ho effetto l’olocausto.	12 So I thought: Now the Philistines are going to fall on me at Gilgal and I have not implored the favourof Yahweh. So I felt obliged to make the burnt offering myself.'
13 E Samuele disse a Saul: Stoltamente hai fatto, e non hai osservato l’ordine dato a te dal Signore Dio tuo. Che se ciò non avessi fatto, il Signore avrebbe fin da questo punto stabilito il tuo regno sopra Israele in sempiterno.	13 Samuel said to Saul, 'You have acted like a fool. You have not obeyed the order which Yahweh yourGod gave you. Otherwise, Yahweh would have confirmed your sovereignty over Israel for ever.
14 Ma non si sosterrà lungamente il tuo regno. Il Signore si è cercato un uomo secondo il cuor suo: e il Signore gli ha ordinato che egli sia condottiero del popolo suo, perchè tu non hai osservati gli ordini del Signore.	14 But now your sovereignty wil not last; Yahweh has discovered a man after his own heart anddesignated him as leader of his people, since you have not carried out what Yahweh ordered you.'
15 E Samuele si partì, e da Gaigala andò a Gabaa di Beniamin. E l’altra gente andarono dietro a Saul contro quegli, i quali assalivan coloro che andavano da Galgala a Gabaa sul colle di Beniamin. E Saul fece la rassegna della gente, che si trovava con lui in numero di circa seicento uomini.	15 Samuel then got up and left Gilgal to continue his journey. Those people remaining followed Saul ashe went to join the warriors, and went from Gilgal to Geba of Benjamin. Saul reviewed the force that was withhim; there were about six hundred men.
16 E Saul, e Gionata suo figliuolo, e la gente ch'era con essi, stavano in Gabaa di Beniamin: e i Filistei erano a Machmas.	16 Saul, his son Jonathan, and the force that was with them took up their quarters in Geba of Benjaminwhile the Philistines camped at Michmash.
17 E usciron tre schiere del campo de’ Filistei per andare al saccheggio. Una schiera prese la strada di Ephra verso la terra di Saul:	17 The raiding company sallied out of the Philistine camp in three groups: one group made for Ophrahin the territory of Shual;
18 E un'altra camminava per la via di Bethoron: e la terza s'indirizzò verso la strada del colle che sta sopra la valle di Seboim dirimpetto al deserto.	18 one group made for Beth-Horon; and one group made for the high ground overlooking the Valley ofthe Hyenas, in the direction of the desert.
19 Or non trovavasi in tutto il paese d'Israele un fabbro da ferro: perocché aveano usata i Filistei questa cautela, affinchè non potessero gli Ebrei farsi spade e lance.	19 There was not a single blacksmith throughout the territory of Israel, the Philistines' reasoning being,'We do not want the Hebrews making swords or spears.'
20 Per la qual cosa tutto Israele andava da' Filistei a far aguzzare i suoi vomeri, e le vanghe, e le scuri, e le zappe.	20 Hence, the Israelites were al in the habit of going down individually to the Philistines to sharpen theirploughshares, axes, mattocks and scythes.
21 Erano perciò spuntati i vomeri, e le vanghe, e i forconi, e le scuri; non avendo nemmeno come aggiustare un pungiglione.	21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel for ploughshares and axes, and one-third for sharpeningmattocks and straightening goads.
22 E venuto il dì della battaglia, tolto Saul, e Gionata suo figliuolo non v'ebbe di tutta la gente ch'era con Saul e Gionata, chi avesse in mano una spada, od una lancia.	22 So it was that on the day of the battle, no one in the army with Saul and Jonathan was equipped witheither sword or spear; only Saul and his son Jonathan were so equipped.
23 Or una schiera di Filistei si mosse per andare di là da Machmas.	23 A Philistine unit set out for the Pass of Michmash.
