1 Figliuolo di un anno era Saul, quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò due anni sopra Israele.	1 Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,
2 E fece Saul la scelta di tre mila Israeliti: e due mila stavano con Saul in Machmas, e sul monte Bethel: e mille erano con Gionata in Gabaa di Beniamin: e rimandò tutto il resto del popolo ognuno alle sue tende.	2 Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.
3 E Gionata trucidò il presidio de' Filistei che era in Gabaa. E quando la nuova ne fu sparsa tra’ Filistei, Saul fece notificarla colle trombe per tutto il paese, dicendo: Sappiano gli Ebrei.	3 And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.
4 E tutto Israele udì questa nuova: Saul ha distrutta la stazione de' Filistei: e Israele alzò la testa contro dei Filistei. Quindi è, che il popolo levò il grido dietro a Saul in Galgala.	4 And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.
5 E i Filistei misero insieme per combattere contro Israele trenta mila cocchi, e sei mila cavalli, e l’altra turba in tanto numero, quante son le arene del mare. E si mossero, e posero il campo a Machmas dalla parte orientale di Bethaven.	5 And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Beth-aven.
6 Or in veggendo gli uomini d'Israele, come eran ridotti alle strette (perocché il popolo era disanimato) si nascosero nelle caverne, e nelle buche, e anche ne’ massi e nelle grotte, e nelle cisterne.	6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.
7 E gli Ebrei passato il Giordano entrarono nella terra di Gad, e di Galaad. Ma mentre Saul era tuttora in Galgala, tutto il popolo che lo seguiva, s'impaurì.	7 And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.
8 E aspettò (Saul) sette giorni secondo l’ordine di Samuele, e non arrivò Samuele a Galgala: e il popolo alla spicciolata se ne andava da lui.	8 And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.
9 Disse adunque Saul: Menatemi l’olocausto, e l’ostia pacifica. E offerse l'olocausto.	9 And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.
10 E finito che ebbe di offerir l'olocausto, ecco che veniva Samuele, e Saul gli uscì incontro per salutarlo.	10 And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.
11 E dissegli Samuele: Che hai tu fatto? Rispose Saul: Perchè io vidi che il popolo se n'andava alla spicciolata da me, e tu non eri giunto dentro i giorni stabiliti, e d'altra parte erano raunati i Filistei a Machmas,	11 And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;
12 Io dissi: Or ora verranno i Filistei contro di me a Galgala, e io non ho placato il Signore. Spinto da necessità ho effetto l’olocausto.	12 Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.
13 E Samuele disse a Saul: Stoltamente hai fatto, e non hai osservato l’ordine dato a te dal Signore Dio tuo. Che se ciò non avessi fatto, il Signore avrebbe fin da questo punto stabilito il tuo regno sopra Israele in sempiterno.	13 And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
14 Ma non si sosterrà lungamente il tuo regno. Il Signore si è cercato un uomo secondo il cuor suo: e il Signore gli ha ordinato che egli sia condottiero del popolo suo, perchè tu non hai osservati gli ordini del Signore.	14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.
15 E Samuele si partì, e da Gaigala andò a Gabaa di Beniamin. E l’altra gente andarono dietro a Saul contro quegli, i quali assalivan coloro che andavano da Galgala a Gabaa sul colle di Beniamin. E Saul fece la rassegna della gente, che si trovava con lui in numero di circa seicento uomini.	15 And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.
16 E Saul, e Gionata suo figliuolo, e la gente ch'era con essi, stavano in Gabaa di Beniamin: e i Filistei erano a Machmas.	16 And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.
17 E usciron tre schiere del campo de’ Filistei per andare al saccheggio. Una schiera prese la strada di Ephra verso la terra di Saul:	17 And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:
18 E un'altra camminava per la via di Bethoron: e la terza s'indirizzò verso la strada del colle che sta sopra la valle di Seboim dirimpetto al deserto.	18 And another company turned the way to Beth-horon: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.
19 Or non trovavasi in tutto il paese d'Israele un fabbro da ferro: perocché aveano usata i Filistei questa cautela, affinchè non potessero gli Ebrei farsi spade e lance.	19 Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:
20 Per la qual cosa tutto Israele andava da' Filistei a far aguzzare i suoi vomeri, e le vanghe, e le scuri, e le zappe.	20 But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock.
21 Erano perciò spuntati i vomeri, e le vanghe, e i forconi, e le scuri; non avendo nemmeno come aggiustare un pungiglione.	21 Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.
22 E venuto il dì della battaglia, tolto Saul, e Gionata suo figliuolo non v'ebbe di tutta la gente ch'era con Saul e Gionata, chi avesse in mano una spada, od una lancia.	22 So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.
23 Or una schiera di Filistei si mosse per andare di là da Machmas.	23 And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.
