1 E Gesù ricominciò a parlare con essi per via di parabole, dicendo:	1 Jesus began to speak to them in parables once again,
2 Il regno de' cieli è simile a un re, il quale fece lo sposalizio del suo figliuolo:	2 'The kingdom of Heaven may be compared to a king who gave a feast for his son's wedding.
3 E mandò i suoi servi a chiamare gli invitati alle nozze, e non volevano andare.	3 He sent his servants to cal those who had been invited, but they would not come.
4 Mandò di nuovo altri servi, dicendo: Dite agli invitati: il mio desinare è già in ordine, si sono ammazzati i buoi, e gli animali di serbatoio, e tutto è pronto: venite alle nozze.	4 Next he sent some more servants with the words, "Tel those who have been invited: Look, mybanquet is al prepared, my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, everything is ready. Come to thewedding."
5 Ma quelli miser ciò in non cale: e se ne andarono chi alla sua villa, chi al suo negozio.	5 But they were not interested: one went off to his farm, another to his business,
6 Altri poi presero i servi di lui, e trattarongli ignominiosamente, e gli uccisero.	6 and the rest seized his servants, maltreated them and kil ed them.
7 Udito ciò, il re si sdegnò; e mandate le sue milizie, sterminò quegli omicidi, e dette alle fiamme la loro città.	7 The king was furious. He despatched his troops, destroyed those murderers and burnt their town.
8 Allora disse a' suoi servi: Le nozze erano all'ordine, ma quelli, che erano stati invitati, non furono degni.	8 Then he said to his servants, "The wedding is ready; but as those who were invited proved to beunworthy,
9 Andate dunque a' capi delle strade, e quanti riscontrerete, chiamate tutti allo nozze.	9 go to the main crossroads and invite everyone you can find to come to the wedding."
10 E andati i servitori di lui per le strade radunarono quanti trovarono e buoni, e cattivi, e il banchetto fu pieno di convitati.	10 So these servants went out onto the roads and col ected together everyone they could find, bad andgood alike; and the wedding hal was fil ed with guests.
11 Ma entrato il re per vedere i convitati, vi osservò un uomo, che non era in abito da nozze.	11 When the king came in to look at the guests he noticed one man who was not wearing a weddinggarment,
12 E disselli: Amico, come se' tu entrato qua, non avendo la veste nuziale? Ma quegli ammutolì.	12 and said to him, "How did you get in here, my friend, without a wedding garment?" And the man wassilent.
13 Allora il re disse a' suoi ministri: legatelo per le mani, e pe' piedi, e gittatelo nelle tenebre esteriori: ivi sarà pianto, e stridore di denti.	13 Then the king said to the attendants, "Bind him hand and foot and throw him into the darknessoutside, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth."
14 Imperocché molti sono i chiamati, e pochi gli eletti.	14 For many are invited but not al are chosen.'
15 Allora i Farisei ritiratisi tenner consiglio per coglierlo in parole.	15 Then the Pharisees went away to work out between them how to trap him in what he said.
16 E mandano da lui i loro discepoli con degli Erodiani, i quali dissero: Maestro, noi sappiamo, che tu se' verace, e insegni la via di Dio secondo la verità, senza badare a chicchessia; imperocché non guardi in faccia gli uomini.	16 And they sent their disciples to him, together with some Herodians, to say, 'Master, we know that youare an honest man and teach the way of God in all honesty, and that you are not afraid of anyone, becausehuman rank means nothing to you.
17 Spiegaci adunque il tuo parere: È egli lecito, o no di pagare il tributo a Cesare?	17 Give us your opinion, then. Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?'
18 Ma Gesù conoscendo la loro malizia, disse: Ipocriti, perché mi tentate?	18 But Jesus was aware of their malice and replied, 'You hypocrites! Why are you putting me to thetest?
19 Mostratemi la moneta del tributo. Ed essi gli presentarono un danaro.	19 Show me the money you pay the tax with.' They handed him a denarius,
20 E Gesù disse loro: Di chi è questa immagine, e questa iscrizione?	20 and he said, 'Whose portrait is this? Whose title?'
21 Gli risposero: Di Cesare. Allora egli disse loro: Rendete dunque a Cesare quel, che è di Cesare; e a Dio quel, che è di Dio.	21 They replied, 'Caesar's.' Then he said to them, 'Very wel , pay Caesar what belongs to Caesar -- andGod what belongs to God.'
22 Ciò udito restarono stupefatti, e lasciatolo se ne andarono.	22 When they heard this they were amazed; they left him alone and went away.
23 In quel giorno andarono a ritrovarlo i Sadducei, i quali negano la risurrezione, e lo interrogarono,	23 That day some Sadducees -- who deny that there is a resurrection -- approached him and they putthis question to him,
24 Dicendo: Maestro, Mosè ha detto: Se uno muore non avendo figliuolo, il suo fratello sposi la moglie di lui, e dia discendenza al fratello.	24 'Master, Moses said that if a man dies childless, his brother is to marry the widow, his sister-in-law, toraise children for his brother.
25 Or eranvi tra di noi sette fratelli: e il primo ammogliatosi venne a morte; e non avendo prole, lanciò la sua moglie al fratello.	25 Now we had a case involving seven brothers; the first married and then died without children, leavinghis wife to his brother;
26 Lo stesso fu del secondo, e del terzo fino al settimo.	26 the same thing happened with the second and third and so on to the seventh,
27 Finalmente ultima di tutti morì anche la donna.	27 and then last of al the woman herself died.
28 Alla risurrezione adunque di chi sarà moglie dei sette? imperocché la hanno avuta tutti.	28 Now at the resurrection, whose wife among the seven wil she be, since she had been married tothem al ?'
29 Ma Gesù rispose loro: Voi siete in errore, non intendendo le scritture, nè il potere di Dio.	29 Jesus answered them, 'You are wrong, because you understand neither the scriptures nor the powerof God.
30 Imperocché alla risurrezione né gli uomini prendono moglie, nè le donne marito; ma sono come gli Angeli di Dio nel cielo.	30 For at the resurrection men and women do not marry; no, they are like the angels in heaven.
31 Riguardo poi alla risurrezione de' morti, non avete voi letto quello, che Dio espresse, dicendo a voi:	31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you never read what God himself said to you:
32 Io sono il Dio d'Abramo, il Dio di Isacco, il Dio di Giacobbe? Egli non è il Dio de' morti, ma de' vivi.	32 I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? He is God, not of the dead, but ofthe living.'
33 Udito ciò le turbe, ammiravano la sua dottrina.	33 And his teaching made a deep impression on the people who heard it.
34 Ma i Farisei avendo saputo, com'egli aveva chiuso la bocca a' Sadducei, si unirono insieme.	34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees they got together
35 E uno di essi dottore della legge lo interrogò per tentarlo.	35 and, to put him to the test, one of them put a further question,
36 Maestro, qual è il gran comandamento della legge?	36 'Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?'
37 Gesù dissegli: Amerai il Signore Dio tuo con tutto il tuo cuore, e con tutta l'anima tua, e con tutto il tuo spirito.	37 Jesus said to him, 'You must love the Lord your God with al your heart, with al your soul, and with alyour mind.
38 Questo è il massimo, e primo comandamento.	38 This is the greatest and the first commandment.
39 Il secondo poi è simile a questo: Amerai il prossimo tuo come te stesso.	39 The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself.
40 Da questi due comandamenti pende tutta quanta la legge, e i profeti.	40 On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets too.'
41 Ed essendo radunati insieme i Farisei, Gesù domandò loro,	41 While the Pharisees were gathered round, Jesus put to them this question,
42 Dicendo: Che vi pare del Cristo: di chi è egli figliuolo? Gli risposero: Di Davidde.	42 'What is your opinion about the Christ? Whose son is he?' They told him, 'David's.'
43 Egli disse loro: Come adunque Davidde in ispirito lo chiama Signore, dicendo:	43 He said to them, 'Then how is it that David, moved by the Spirit, cal s him Lord, where he says:
44 Il Signore ha detto al mio Signore: Siedi alla mia destra, sin a tanto che io metta i tuoi nemici per isgabello ai tuoi piedi?	44 The Lord declared to my Lord, take your seat at my right hand, til I have made your enemies yourfootstool?
45 Se dunque Davidde lo chiama Signore, come è egli suo figliuolo?	45 'If David cal s him Lord, how then can he be his son?'
46 E nessuno potea replicargli parola: né vi fu, chi ardisse da quel di in poi di interrogarlo.	46 No one could think of anything to say in reply, and from that day no one dared to ask him any furtherquestions.
