1 Dopo queste cose Gesù andava per la Galilea, non volendo andare nella Giudea, perchè i Giudei cercavano di farlo morire.	1 After this Jesus travel ed round Galilee; he could not travel round Judaea, because the Jews wereseeking to kil him.
2 Ed era imminente la festa dei Giudei, detta dei Tabernacoli.	2 As the Jewish feast of Shelters drew near,
3 Gli dissero pertanto i suoi fratelli: Parti di qua e vattene in Giudea, affinchè anche quei discepoli tuoi vedano le opere da te fatte;	3 his brothers said to him, 'Leave this place and go to Judaea, so that your disciples, too, can see the works you are doing;
4 chè certo nessuno il quale cerchi di essere acclamato in pubblico fa di nascosto le opere sue; e se fai tali cose fatti conoscere al mondo.	4 no one who wants to be publicly known acts in secret; if this is what you are doing, you should revealyourself to the world.'
5 Or nemmeno i suoi fratelli credevano in lui.	5 Not even his brothers had faith in him.
6 Ma Gesù disse loro: Non è ancora venuto il mio tempo; ma per voi è sempre tempo.	6 Jesus answered, 'For me the right time has not come yet, but for you any time is the right time.
7 Il mondo non può odiarvi, ma odia me, perchè fo' vedere che le opere sue sono malvagie.	7 The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me, because I give evidence that its ways are evil.
8 Andate voi a questa festa, io non ci vengo, perchè non è ancora il mio tempo.	8 Go up to the festival yourselves: I am not going to this festival, because for me the time is not ripe yet.'
9 Ciò detto, si trattenne in Galilea.	9 Having said that, he stayed behind in Galilee.
10 Ma partiti i suoi fratelli, andò alla festa anche lui, non pubblicamente, ma quasi di nascosto.	10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, not publicly but secretly.
11 I Giudei intanto lo cercavano alla festa e dicevano: Lui dov'è?	11 At the festival the Jews were on the look-out for him: 'Where is he?' they said.
12 E un gran sussurro si faceva di lui, tra la gente. Chi diceva: E' buono; chi: No, anzi, travia il popolo.	12 There was a great deal of talk about him in the crowds. Some said, 'He is a good man'; others, 'No, heis leading the people astray.'
13 Ma nessuno parlava pubblicamente di lui per timore dei Giudei.	13 Yet no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the Jews.
14 Trascorsa la metà dei dì festivi, Gesù salì al tempio e si mise a insegnare.	14 When the festival was half over, Jesus went to the Temple and began to teach.
15 E i Giudei dicevano maravigliati: Come sa di lettere senza averle mai studiate?	15 The Jews were astonished and said, 'How did he learn to read? He has not been educated.'
16 E Gesù rispose loro: La mia dottrina non è mia, ma di chi mi ha mandato.	16 Jesus answered them: 'My teaching is not from myself: it comes from the one who sent me;
17 Chi vuol fare la volontà di lui conoscerà se la dottrina sia da Dio o se parlo da me stesso.	17 anyone who is prepared to do his wil , wil know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speakon my own account.
18 Chi parla di suo cerca la propria gloria; ma chi cerca la gloria di chi l'ha mandato, è verace, e non c'è in lui ingiustizia.	18 When someone speaks on his own account, he is seeking honour for himself; but when he is seekingthe honour of the person who sent him, then he is true and altogether without dishonesty.
19 Mosè non diede a voi la legge? Eppure nessuno di voi l'osserva.	19 Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law!
20 Perchè cercate di uccidermi? Rispose la gente: Tu sei indemoniato: chi cerca di ucciderti?	20 The crowd replied, 'You are mad! Who wants to kil you?'
21 E Gesù replicò loro: Un'opera sola ho fatto e tutti ne siete maravigliati.	21 Jesus answered, 'One work I did, and you are all amazed at it.
22 Inoltre Mosè vi diede la circoncisione, non che essa venga da Mosè, ma bensì dai patriarchi: e voi circoncidete un uomo anche di sabato.	22 Moses ordered you to practise circumcision -- not that it began with him, it goes back to the patriarchs-- and you circumcise on the Sabbath.
23 Se ci concidendo un uomo di sabato, la legge di Mosè non è violata, vi sdegnate di me perchè di sabato ho guarito un uomo tutto intero?	23 Now if someone can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses is not broken, why areyou angry with me for making someone completely healthy on a Sabbath?
24 Non giudicate secondo l'apparenza, ma giudicate con retto giudizio.	24 Do not keep judging according to appearances; let your judgement be according to what is right.'
25 Dicevano allora alcuni di Gerusalemme: Non è lui che cercali d'uccidere?	25 Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, 'Isn't this the man they want to kil ?
26 Ed ecco, parla pubblicamente e non gli dicon nulla. Avrebbero forse i capi riconosciuto in lui il Cristo?	26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authoritieshave recognised that he is the Christ?
27 Noi però sappiamo di dove è costui; ma il Cristo quando verrà, nessuno saprà donde sia.	27 Yet we al know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one wil know where he comesfrom.'
28 Allora Gesù, che insegnava nel tempio, disse ad alta voce: Dunque conoscete me e conoscete donde sia: eppur io non son venuto da me; ma la stessa verità mi ha mandato, che voi non conoscete.	28 Then, as Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he cried out: You know me and you know where I camefrom. Yet I have not come of my own accord: but he who sent me is true; You do not know him,
29 Ma io lo conosco, perchè son da lui ed egli mi ha mandato.	29 but I know him because I have my being from him and it was he who sent me.
30 Cercarono perciò di prenderlo, ma nessuno gli mise lo mani addosso; perchè non era ancora venuta la sua ora.	30 They wanted to arrest him then, but because his hour had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.
31 Però molti del popolo credettero in lui, e dicevano: Il Cristo, quando verrà, farà forse più miracoli di quelli che ha fatto lui?	31 There were many people in the crowds, however, who believed in him; they were saying, 'When theChrist comes, wil he give more signs than this man has?'
32 I Farisei udita la folla che bisbigliava queste cose, d'accordo con i principi mandarono delle guardie a prenderlo.	32 Hearing that talk like this about him was spreading among the people, the Pharisees sent the Templeguards to arrest him.
33 Allora Gesù disse loro: Ancora per poco tempo sono con voi, e vado da chi mi ha mandato.	33 Then Jesus said: For a short time I am with you stil ; then I shal go back to the one who sent me.
34 Mi cercherete e non mi troverete; e dove io sono non potete venire.	34 You will look for me and wil not find me; where I am you cannot come.
35 Dicevan perciò tra loro i Giudei: Dove mai andrà, che noi non lo troveremo? Andrà forse ai dispersi tra le nazioni, ad insegnare ai pagani?	35 So the Jews said to one another, 'Where is he intending to go that we shal not be able to find him? Ishe intending to go abroad to the people who are dispersed among the Greeks and to teach the Greeks?
36 Che significa questo suo dire: Voi mi cercherete e non mi tro verete e dove son io non potete venire ?	36 'Why do you want to kil me?' What does he mean when he says: "You will look for me and wil not findme; where I am, you cannot come?" '
37 Poi nell'ultimo gran giorno della festa, Gesù, levatosi in piedi, disse ad alta voce: Chi ha sete venga a me e beva.	37 On the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried out: 'Let anyone who is thirstycome to me!
38 Dal seno di chi crede in me, come dice la Scrittura, scaturiranno fiumi d'acqua viva.	38 Let anyone who believes in me come and drink! As scripture says, "From his heart shal flow streamsof living water." '
39 Diceva questo dello Spirito che dovevan ricevere i credenti in lui; perchè non era ancora stato dato lo Spirito, non essendo ancora glorificato Gesù.	39 He was speaking of the Spirit which those who believed in him were to receive; for there was no Spiritas yet because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
40 Or molti di quella folla, udite queste parole, cominciarono a dire: Egli è davvéro il profeta.	40 Some of the crowd who had been listening said, 'He is indeed the prophet,'
41 Ed altri: Egli è il Cristo. Ma alcuni dicevano: Viene forse dalla Galilea il Cristo?	41 and some said, 'He is the Christ,' but others said, 'Would the Christ come from Galilee?
42 Non dice forse la Scrittura che il Cristo ha da venire dalla stirpe di David e dal villaggio di Betlem, di dove era David?	42 Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, thevil age where David was?'
43 E così a motivo di lui ci fu dissenso tra la folla.	43 So the people could not agree about him.
44 Ed alcuni di essi volevano prenderlo; ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso.	44 Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actual y laid a hand on him.
45 Le guardie, dunque, tornarono dai principi dei sacerdoti e dai Farisei, i quali dissero loro: Perchè non l'avete condotto?	45 The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, 'Why haven't you broughthim?'
46 Le guardie risposero: Nessun uomo ha mai parlato come lui.	46 The guards replied, 'No one has ever spoken like this man.'
47 Ma i Farisei risposero loro: Forse anche voi siete stati sedotti?	47 'So,' the Pharisees answered, 'you, too, have been led astray?
48 V'ha forse alcuno dei capi e dei Sacerdoti che abbia creduto in lui?	48 Have any of the authorities come to believe in him? Any of the Pharisees?
49 Ma questa folla che non capisce la legge è maledetta.	49 This rabble knows nothing about the Law -- they are damned.'
50 Disse loro Nicodemo quello che era andato di notte da Gesù e che era un di loro:	50 One of them, Nicodemus -- the same man who had come to Jesus earlier -- said to them,
51 La nostra legge condanna forse un uomo prima di averlo sentito e di saper ciò che faceti?	51 'But surely our Law does not al ow us to pass judgement on anyone without first giving him a hearingand discovering what he is doing?'
52 Gli risposero: Sei forse Galileo anche tu? Esamina le Scritture e vedrai che dalla Galilea non sorge profeta.	52 To this they answered, 'Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets donot arise in Galilee.'
53 E ciascuno se ne tornò a casa sua.	53 They al went home,
