BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - Anche queste sentenze sono di Salomone che stralciaronogli uomini di Ezechia, re di Giuda.	1 Here are some more of Solomon's proverbs, transcribed at the court of Hezekiah king of Judah:
2 È gloria di Dio occultare la parola, e gloria del re, investigare la parola.	2 To conceal a matter, this is the glory of God, to sift it thoroughly, the glory of kings.
3 Il cielo in altezza e la terra in profonditàe il cuore dei re sono imperscrutabili.	3 The heavens for height and the earth for depth, unfathomable, as are the hearts of kings.
4 Togli la scoria dall'argento e ne uscirà un vaso finissimo.	4 From silver remove the dross and it emerges wholly purified;
5 Togli l'empietà dal cospetto del re e si stabilirà sopra la giustizia e il suo trono.	5 from the king's presence remove the wicked and on uprightness his throne is founded.
6 Non far pompa di te in presenza del re e non collocarti al posto dei grandi;	6 In the presence of the king do not give yourself airs, do not take a place among the great;
7 perchè è meglio ti si dica: «Sali qua», che esser umiliato davanti al principe.	7 better to be invited, 'Come up here', than be humiliated in the presence of the prince.
8 Ciò che hanno visto gli occhi tuoinon metterlo fuori subito nel contrasto, e non avvenga che tu non possa più rimediare, quando avessi disonorato il tuo prossimo.	8 What your eyes have witnessed do not produce too quickly at the trial, for what are you to do at theend should your neighbour confute you?
9 Tratta la tua causa col tuo amico, ma il secreto non rivelarlo ad altri;	9 Have the quarrel out with your neighbour. but do not disclose another's secret,
10 affinchè se l'ode, non t'insultie non cessi più dal rinfacciartelo. La grazia e l'amicizia liberano e tu conservale per non riuscire biasimevole.	10 for fear your listener put you to shame, and the loss of repute be irremediable.
11 Pomi d'oro in legature d'argentoè una parola detta a suo tempo.	11 Like apples of gold inlaid with silver is a word that is aptly spoken.
12 Un orecchino d'oro e una gemma brillantechi dà ammonimenti a un sapiente e a un orecchio docile.	12 A golden ring, an ornament of finest gold, is a wise rebuke to an attentive ear.
13 Come il fresco della neve in giorno di mietitura, così l'ambasciatore fedele a colui che l'ha mandato, gli fa provare un ristoro all'animo.	13 The coolness of snow in harvest time, such is a trustworthy messenger to those who send him: herevives the soul of his master.
14 Nubi e vento senza che segua la pioggiaè un uomo ostentatore, che non dà seguito a ciò che promette.	14 Clouds and wind, but no rain: such is anyone whose promises are princely but never kept.
15 Colla pazienza il principe si lascia addolcire e la lingua molle rompe ogni durezza.	15 With patience a judge may be cajoled: a soft tongue breaks bones.
16 Hai trovato del miele? mangiane quanto ti basta, affinchè se ti satolli non l'abbia a vomitare.	16 Eat to your satisfaction what honey you may find, but not to excess or you wil bring it up again.
17 Trattieni il piede dall'andare in casa del tuo prossimo, affinchè non si nausei e t'aborrisca.	17 Do not set foot too often in your neighbour's house, for fear the neighbour tire of you and come tohate you.
18 Un dardo, una spada, una sa etta acutaè l'uomo che depone contro al suo prossimo in falso testimonio.	18 A mace, a sword, a piercing arrow, such is anyone who bears false witness against a companion.
19 Un dente cariato e un piede cascanteè la fiducia di chi spera in uno sleale nel giorno dell'angustia.	19 Decaying tooth, lame foot, such is the fickle when trusted in time of trouble:
20 Perde il mantello in giorno di freddo.... Aceto sul nitrochi canta arie allegre ad un cuore triste. Come la tignuola al panno e il tarlo al legno, così nuoce la tristezza al cuore dell'uomo.	20 as well take off your coat in bitter weather. You are pouring vinegar on a wound when you sing songsto a sorrowing heart.
21 Se il tuo nemico avrà fame dagli da mangiare, se avrà sete dagli acqua da bere,	21 If your enemy is hungry, give him something to eat; if thirsty, something to drink.
22 così facendo, radunerai sul suo capo carboni accesi, e il Signore te ne renderà il merito.	22 By this you will be heaping red-hot coals on his head, and Yahweh wil reward you.
23 Il vento di tramontana sgomina la pioggia, e una faccia severa, la lingua maledica.	23 The north wind begets the rain, and a backbiting tongue, black looks.
24 È meglio stare in un angolo del solaio, che con una donna litigiosa e far camera comune.	24 Better the corner of a roof to live on than a house shared with a quarrelsome woman.
25 Acqua fresca ad una persona assetataè un buon messaggio di terra lontana.	25 Cold water to a thirsty throat; such is good news from a distant land.
26 Una fontana sciupata coi piedi, una sorgente intorbidataè il giusto che cede davanti all'empio.	26 A churned -- up spring, a fountain fouled; such is the upright person trembling before the wicked.
27 Come a colui che mangia troppo miele non gli fa bene, così chi si fa scrutatore della ma està, sarà oppresso dalla gloria.	27 It is not good to eat too much honey, nor to seek for glory on top of glory.
28 Come una città aperta e senza cinta di muro, tal è l'uomo che parlando non può metter ritegno al suo spirito.	28 An open town, and without defences: such is anyone who lacks self-control.
