1 - Anche queste sentenze sono di Salomone che stralciaronogli uomini di Ezechia, re di Giuda.	1 These also are proverbs of Solomon. The men of Hezekiah, king of Judah, transmitted them.
2 È gloria di Dio occultare la parola, e gloria del re, investigare la parola.	2 God has glory in what he conceals, kings have glory in what they fathom.
3 Il cielo in altezza e la terra in profonditàe il cuore dei re sono imperscrutabili.	3 As the heavens in height, and the earth in depth, the heart of kings is unfathomable.
4 Togli la scoria dall'argento e ne uscirà un vaso finissimo.	4 Remove the dross from silver, and it comes forth perfectly purified;
5 Togli l'empietà dal cospetto del re e si stabilirà sopra la giustizia e il suo trono.	5 Remove the wicked from the presence of the king, and his throne is made firm through righteousness.
6 Non far pompa di te in presenza del re e non collocarti al posto dei grandi;	6 Claim no honor in the king's presence, nor occupy the place of great men;
7 perchè è meglio ti si dica: «Sali qua», che esser umiliato davanti al principe.	7 For it is better that you be told, "Come up closer!" than that you be humbled before the prince.
8 Ciò che hanno visto gli occhi tuoinon metterlo fuori subito nel contrasto, e non avvenga che tu non possa più rimediare, quando avessi disonorato il tuo prossimo.	8 What your eyes have seen bring not forth hastily against an opponent; For what will you do later on when your neighbor puts you to shame?
9 Tratta la tua causa col tuo amico, ma il secreto non rivelarlo ad altri;	9 Discuss your case with your neighbor, but another man's secret do not disclose;
10 affinchè se l'ode, non t'insultie non cessi più dal rinfacciartelo. La grazia e l'amicizia liberano e tu conservale per non riuscire biasimevole.	10 Lest, hearing it, he reproach you, and your ill repute cease not.
11 Pomi d'oro in legature d'argentoè una parola detta a suo tempo.	11 Like golden apples in silver settings are words spoken at the proper time.
12 Un orecchino d'oro e una gemma brillantechi dà ammonimenti a un sapiente e a un orecchio docile.	12 Like a golden earring, or a necklace of fine gold, is a wise reprover to an obedient ear.
13 Come il fresco della neve in giorno di mietitura, così l'ambasciatore fedele a colui che l'ha mandato, gli fa provare un ristoro all'animo.	13 Like the coolness of snow in the heat of the harvest is a faithful messenger for the one who sends him. (He refreshes the soul of his master.)
14 Nubi e vento senza che segua la pioggiaè un uomo ostentatore, che non dà seguito a ciò che promette.	14 Like clouds and wind when no rain follows is the man who boastfully promises what he never gives.
15 Colla pazienza il principe si lascia addolcire e la lingua molle rompe ogni durezza.	15 By patience is a ruler persuaded, and a soft tongue will break a bone.
16 Hai trovato del miele? mangiane quanto ti basta, affinchè se ti satolli non l'abbia a vomitare.	16 If you find honey, eat only what you need, lest you become glutted with it and vomit it up.
17 Trattieni il piede dall'andare in casa del tuo prossimo, affinchè non si nausei e t'aborrisca.	17 Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor's house, lest he have more than enough of you, and hate you.
18 Un dardo, una spada, una sa etta acutaè l'uomo che depone contro al suo prossimo in falso testimonio.	18 Like a club, or a sword, or a sharp arrow, is the man who bears false witness against his neighbor.
19 Un dente cariato e un piede cascanteè la fiducia di chi spera in uno sleale nel giorno dell'angustia.	19 Like an infected tooth or an unsteady foot is (dependence on) a faithless man in time of trouble.
20 Perde il mantello in giorno di freddo.... Aceto sul nitrochi canta arie allegre ad un cuore triste. Come la tignuola al panno e il tarlo al legno, così nuoce la tristezza al cuore dell'uomo.	20 Like a moth in clothing, or a maggot in wood, sorrow gnaws at the human heart.
21 Se il tuo nemico avrà fame dagli da mangiare, se avrà sete dagli acqua da bere,	21 If your enemy be hungry, give him food to eat, if he be thirsty, give him to drink;
22 così facendo, radunerai sul suo capo carboni accesi, e il Signore te ne renderà il merito.	22 For live coals you will heap on his head, and the LORD will vindicate you.
23 Il vento di tramontana sgomina la pioggia, e una faccia severa, la lingua maledica.	23 The north wind brings rain, and a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.
24 È meglio stare in un angolo del solaio, che con una donna litigiosa e far camera comune.	24 It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop than in a roomy house with a quarrelsome woman.
25 Acqua fresca ad una persona assetataè un buon messaggio di terra lontana.	25 Like cool water to one faint from thirst is good news from a far country.
26 Una fontana sciupata coi piedi, una sorgente intorbidataè il giusto che cede davanti all'empio.	26 Like a troubled fountain or a polluted spring is a just man who gives way before the wicked.
27 Come a colui che mangia troppo miele non gli fa bene, così chi si fa scrutatore della ma està, sarà oppresso dalla gloria.	27 To eat too much honey is not good; nor to seek honor after honor.
28 Come una città aperta e senza cinta di muro, tal è l'uomo che parlando non può metter ritegno al suo spirito.	28 Like an open city with no defenses is the man with no check on his feelings.
