BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 El que ama a su hijo, le azota sin cesar, para poderse alegrar en su futuro.	1 Whoever loves his son will beat him frequently so that in after years the son may be his comfort.
2 El que enseña a su hijo, sacará provecho de él, entre sus conocidos de él se gloriará.	2 Whoever is strict with his son wil reap the benefit, and be able to boast of him to his acquaintances.
3 El que instruye a su hijo, pondrá celoso a su enemigo, y ante sus amigos se sentirá gozoso.	3 Whoever educates his son wil be the envy of his enemy, and wil be proud of him among his friends.
4 Murió su padre, y como si no hubiera muerto, pues dejó tras de sí un hombre igual que él.	4 Even when the father dies, he might wel not be dead, since he leaves his likeness behind him.
5 En su vida le mira con contento, y a su muerte no se siente triste.	5 In life he has had the joy of his company, dying, he has no anxieties.
6 Contra sus enemigos deja un vengador, y para los amigos quien les pague sus favores.	6 He leaves an avenger against his enemies and a rewarder of favours for his friends.
7 El que mima a su hijo, vendará sus heridas, a cada grito se le conmoverán sus entrañas.	7 Whoever coddles his son will bandage his wounds, his heart wil turn over at every cry.
8 Caballo no domado, sale indócil, hijo consentido, sale libertino.	8 A badly broken-in horse turns out stubborn, a son left to himself turns out headstrong.
9 Halaga a tu hijo, y te dará sorpresas juega con él, y te traerá pesares.	9 Pamper your child and he wil terrorise you, play along with him and he wil bring you sorrow.
10 No rías con él, para no llorar y acabar rechinando de dientes.	10 Do not laugh with him, or one day you wil weep with him and end up gnashing your teeth.
11 No le des libertad en su juventud, y no pases por alto sus errores.	11 While he is young, do not al ow him his freedom and do not wink at his mistakes.
12 Doblega su cerviz mientras es joven, tunde sus costillas cuando es niño, no sea que, volviéndose indócil, te desobedezca, y sufras por él amargura de alma.	12 Bend his neck in youth, bruise his ribs while he is a child, or else he wil grow stubborn anddisobedient, and hurt you very deeply.
13 Enseña a tu hijo y trabaja en él, para que no tropieces por su desvergüenza.	13 Be strict with your son, and persevere with him, or you will rue his insolence.
14 Vale más pobre sano y fuerte de constitución que rico lleno de achaques en su cuerpo.	14 Better be poor if healthy and fit than rich if tormented in body.
15 Salud y buena constitución valen más que todo el oro, cuerpo vigoroso más que inmensa fortuna.	15 Health and strength are better than any gold, a robust body than untold wealth.
16 Ni hay riqueza mejor que la salud del cuerpo, ni contento mayor que la alegría del corazón.	16 No riches can outweigh bodily health, no enjoyment surpass a cheerful heart.
17 Mejor es la muerte que una vida amarga, el descanso eterno que enfermedad permanente.	17 Better death than a wretched life, and everlasting rest than chronic il ness.
18 Manjares derramados sobre boca cerrada, eso son las ofrendas de alimentos puestas sobre una tumba.	18 Good things lavished on a closed mouth are like food offerings put on a grave.
19 ¿De qué le sirve el sacrificio a un ídolo? ¡ni lo comerá ni lo olerá! Así aquel a quien persigue el Señor,	19 What use is an offering to an idol which can neither eat nor smel ? How describe someone pursued bythe Lord's displeasure?
20 que mira con sus ojos y gime. Escomo un eunuco que oprime a una virgen y gime.	20 He looks and sighs like a eunuch embracing a pretty girl -- how he sighs!
21 No entregues tu alma a la tristeza, ni te atormentes a ti mismo con tus cavilaciones.	21 Do not abandon yourself to sorrow, do not torment yourself with brooding.
22 La alegría de corazón es la vida del hombre, el regocijo del varón, prolongación de sus días.	22 Gladness of heart is life to anyone, joy is what gives length of days.
23 Engaña tu alma y consuela tu corazón, echa lejos de ti la tristeza; que la tristeza perdió a muchos, y no hay en ella utilidad.	23 Give your cares the slip, console your heart, chase sorrow far away; for sorrow has been the ruin ofmany, and is no use to anybody.
24 Envidia y malhumor los días acortan, las preocupaciones traen la vejez antes de tiempo.	24 Jealousy and anger shorten your days, and worry brings premature old age.
25 Un corazón radiante viene bien en las comidas, se preocupa de lo que come.	25 A genial heart makes a good trencherman, someone who enjoys a good meal.
