1 Da antwortete Ijob und sprach:	1 Then Job answered:
2 Wahrhaftig weiß ich, dass es so ist: Wie wäre ein Mensch bei Gott im Recht!	2 "Truly I know that it is so: But how can a man be just before God?
3 Wenn er mit ihm rechten wollte, nicht auf eins von tausend könnt er ihm Rede stehen.	3 If one wished to contend with him, one could not answer him once in a thousand times.
4 Weisen Sinnes und stark an Macht - wer böte ihm Trotz und bliebe heil?	4 He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength --who has hardened himself against him, and succeeded?--
5 Er versetzt Berge; sie merken es nicht, dass er in seinem Zorn sie umstürzt.	5 he who removes mountains, and they know it not, when he overturns them in his anger;
6 Er erschüttert die Erde an ihrem Ort, sodass ihre Säulen erzittern.	6 who shakes the earth out of its place, and its pillars tremble;
7 Er spricht zur Sonne, sodass sie nicht strahlt, er versiegelt die Sterne.	7 who commands the sun, and it does not rise; who seals up the stars;
8 Er spannt allein den Himmel aus und schreitet einher auf den Höhen des Meeres.	8 who alone stretched out the heavens, and trampled the waves of the sea;
9 Er schuf das Sternbild des Bären, den Orion, das Siebengestirn, die Kammern des Südens.	9 who made the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the chambers of the south;
10 Er schuf so Großes, es ist nicht zu erforschen, Wunderdinge, sie sind nicht zu zählen.	10 who does great things beyond understanding, and marvelous things without number.
11 Zieht er an mir vorüber, ich seh ihn nicht, fährt er daher, ich merk ihn nicht.	11 Lo, he passes by me, and I see him not; he moves on, but I do not perceive him.
12 Rafft er hinweg, wer hält ihn zurück? Wer darf zu ihm sagen: Was tust du da?	12 Behold, he snatches away; who can hinder him? who will say to him, 'What doest thou?
13 Gott hält seinen Zorn nicht zurück, unter ihm mussten selbst Rahabs Helfer sich beugen.	13 "God will not turn back his anger; beneath him bowed the helpers of Rahab.
14 Wie sollte denn ich ihm entgegnen, wie meine Worte gegen ihn wählen?	14 How then can I answer him, choosing my words with him?
15 Und wär ich im Recht, ich könnte nichts entgegnen, um Gnade müsste ich bei meinem Richter flehen.	15 Though I am innocent, I cannot answer him; I must appeal for mercy to my accuser.
16 Wollte ich rufen, würde er mir Antwort geben? Ich glaube nicht, dass er auf meine Stimme hört.	16 If I summoned him and he answered me, I would not believe that he was listening to my voice.
17 Er, der im Sturm mich niedertritt, ohne Grund meine Wunden mehrt,	17 For he crushes me with a tempest, and multiplies my wounds without cause;
18 er lässt mich nicht zu Atem kommen, er sättigt mich mit Bitternis.	18 he will not let me get my breath, but fills me with bitterness.
19 Geht es um Kraft, er ist der Starke, geht es um Recht, wer lädt mich vor?	19 If it is a contest of strength, behold him! If it is a matter of justice, who can summon him?
20 Wär ich im Recht, mein eigener Mund spräche mich schuldig, wäre ich gerade, er machte mich krumm.	20 Though I am innocent, my own mouth would condemn me; though I am blameless, he would prove me perverse.
21 Schuldlos bin ich, doch achte ich nicht auf mich, mein Leben werfe ich hin.	21 I am blameless; I regard not myself; I loathe my life.
22 Einerlei; so sag ich es denn: Schuldlos wie schuldig bringt er um.	22 It is all one; therefore I say, he destroys both the blameless and the wicked.
23 Wenn die Geißel plötzlich tötet, spottet er über der Schuldlosen Angst.	23 When disaster brings sudden death, he mocks at the calamity of the innocent.
24 Die Erde ist in Frevlerhand gegeben, das Gesicht ihrer Richter deckt er zu. Ist er es nicht, wer ist es dann?	24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; he covers the faces of its judges-- if it is not he, who then is it?
25 Schneller als ein Läufer eilen meine Tage, sie fliehen dahin und schauen kein Glück.	25 "My days are swifter than a runner; they flee away, they see no good.
26 Sie gleiten vorbei wie Kähne aus Schilf, dem Adler gleich, der auf Beute stößt.	26 They go by like skiffs of reed, like an eagle swooping on the prey.
27 Sage ich: Ich will meine Klage vergessen, meine Miene ändern und heiter blicken!,	27 If I say, 'I will forget my complaint, I will put off my sad countenance, and be of good cheer,'
28 so graut mir vor all meinen Schmerzen; ich weiß, du sprichst mich nicht frei.	28 I become afraid of all my suffering, for I know thou wilt not hold me innocent.
29 Ich muss nun einmal schuldig sein, wozu müh ich mich umsonst?	29 I shall be condemned; why then do I labor in vain?
30 Wollte ich auch mit Schnee mich waschen, meine Hände mit Lauge reinigen,	30 If I wash myself with snow, and cleanse my hands with lye,
31 du würdest mich doch in die Grube tauchen, sodass meinen Kleidern vor mir ekelt.	31 yet thou wilt plunge me into a pit, and my own clothes will abhor me.
32 Denn du bist kein Mensch wie ich, dem ich entgegnen könnte: Lasst uns zusammen zum Gericht gehen!	32 For he is not a man, as I am, that I might answer him, that we should come to trial together.
33 Gäbe es doch einen Schiedsmann zwischen uns! Er soll seine Hand auf uns beide legen.	33 There is no umpire between us, who might lay his hand upon us both.
34 Er nehme von mir seine Rute, sein Schrecken soll mich weiter nicht ängstigen;	34 Let him take his rod away from me, and let not dread of him terrify me.
35 dann will ich reden, ohne ihn zu fürchten. Doch so ist es nicht um mich bestellt.	35 Then I would speak without fear of him, for I am not so in myself.
