| 1 E morì Samuele, e tutto Israele si adunò e lo pianse, e lo seppellirono in casa sua in Ramatha. E David si mosse per andare nel deserto di Pharan. | 1 Now Samuel died; and all Israel assembled and mourned for him, and they buried him in his house at Ramah. Then David rose and went down to the wilderness of Paran. |
| 2 Or eravi un uomo nella solitudine di Maon che avea i suoi beni sul Carmelo; e quest'uomo era straricco: e avea tre mila pecore, e mille capre: e avvenne che si faceva la tosatura delle sue pecore sul Carmelo. | 2 And there was a man in Maon, whose business was in Carmel. The man was very rich; he had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. He was shearing his sheep in Carmel. |
| 3 E quest'uomo avea nome Nabal; e il nome di sua moglie era Abigail: donna di somma prudenza, e avvenente; ma il marito di lei era crudo,e di cattivi fatti, e malvagio. Egli era della stirpe di Caleb. | 3 Now the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. The woman was of good understanding and beautiful, but the man was churlish and ill-behaved; he was a Calebite. |
| 4 David adunque avendo avuta notizia nel deserto, come Nabal tosava i suoi greggi, | 4 David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep. |
| 5 Mandò dieci giovani, e disse loro: Salite sul Carmelo, e andate a trovar Nabal, e lo saluterete a mio nome con civiltà, | 5 So David sent ten young men; and David said to the young men, "Go up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name. |
| 6 E gli direte: La pace sia a' miei fratelli, e a te, e pace alla tua casa, e pace a tutto quello che a te appartiene. | 6 And thus you shall salute him: Peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have. |
| 7 Ho sentito dire, come i tuoi pastori fanno la tosatura; essi stavano con noi nel deserto, nè mai gli abbiamo inquietati; e non mancò nulla de' loro greggi per tutto il tempo che furon con noi sul Carmelo. | 7 I hear that you have shearers; now your shepherds have been with us, and we did them no harm, and they missed nothing, all the time they were in Carmel. |
| 8 Domandane a' tuoi servi, e te ne daranno conto. Trovin pertanto adesso i servi tuoi grazia dinanzi a te, dacché siam venuti in giorno d'allegria: e dà ai tuoi servi, e a David tuo figliuolo quel che ti è comodo di dare. | 8 Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Therefore let my young men find favor in your eyes; for we come on a feast day. Pray, give whatever you have at hand to your servants and to your son David.'" |
| 9 E i giovani di David andarono, e dissero tutto questo a Nabal da parte di David; e si tacquero. | 9 When David's young men came, they said all this to Nabal in the name of David; and then they waited. |
| 10 Ma Nabal rispose ai giovani di David, e disse: Chi è David? Chi è il figliuolo d'Isai? cresce oggimai il numero dei servi, che scappano da' loro padroni. | 10 And Nabal answered David's servants, "Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants nowadays who are breaking away from their masters. |
| 11 Prenderò adunque io il mio pane e le mie acque, e le carni delle pecore che ho ucciso per quei che tosano, e darolle a gente, che non so donde vengano? | 11 Shall I take my bread and my water and my meat that I have killed for my shearers, and give it to men who come from I do not know where?" |
| 12 Ripigliarono adunque i servi di David la loro strada, e tornarono, e riferirono a lui tutto quello che gli avea detto. | 12 So David's young men turned away, and came back and told him all this. |
| 13 AIlora disse David alla sua gente: Si cinga ognuno la sua spada. E ognun se la cinse, e David parimente si cinse la sua spada: e andarono con David circa quattrocento uomini; e rimasero dugento al bagaglio. | 13 And David said to his men, "Every man gird on his sword!" And every man of them girded on his sword; David also girded on his sword; and about four hundred men went up after David, while two hundred remained with the baggage. |
| 14 Ma uno de' servi di Nabal recò alla moglie di lui Abigail questo avviso, e disse: Sappi che David t’ha mandato dal deserto alcuni uomini a salutare il nostro padrone: e questi non gli ha guardati in viso. | 14 But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, "Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute our master; and he railed at them. |
| 15 Questa gente è stata assai benigna verso di noi, e non ci ha inquietati, e non è mancato mai nulla per tutto il tempo che siamo stati con loro nel deserto, | 15 Yet the men were very good to us, and we suffered no harm, and we did not miss anything when we were in the fields, as long as we went with them; |
| 16 Erano per noi come una muraglia tanto di giorno, come di notte per tutto il tempo che siamo stati con loro pascendo i greggi. | 16 they were a wall to us both by night and by day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep. |
| 17 Per la qual cosa pensa tu, e rifletti a quel che abbi da fare: perocché è matura la perdizione pel tuo marito, e per la tua casa, ed egli è un figliuolo di Befial, e nissuno può parlargli. | 17 Now therefore know this and consider what you should do; for evil is determined against our master and against all his house, and he is so ill-natured that one cannot speak to him." |
| 18 Abigail adunque si affrettò, e prese dugento pani, e due otri di vino, e cinque arieti cotti, e cinque misure di farina d'orzo, e cento penzoli di uva secca, e dugento panieri di fichi secchi, e caricò (il tutto) sopra gli asini. | 18 Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and two skins of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched grain, and a hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on asses. |
| 19 E disse a’ suoi servi: Andate innanzi, e io verrò appresso a voi; ma non disse nulla al marito suo Nabal. | 19 And she said to her young men, "Go on before me; behold, I come after you." But she did not tell her husband Nabal. |
| 20 Quando adunque ella fu salita sull'asino, e scendeva alle falde del monte, David colla sua gente le veniva di contro: ed ella si avanzò verso di loro. | 20 And as she rode on the ass, and came down under cover of the mountain, behold, David and his men came down toward her; and she met them. |
| 21 E Davidde diceva: Veramente invano ho io salvato tutta la roba di colui nel deserto; e non perì nulla di quel che era suo, ed ei mi ha renduto male per bene. | 21 Now David had said, "Surely in vain have I guarded all that this fellow has in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that belonged to him; and he has returned me evil for good. |
| 22 Il Signore faccia questo, e peggio a' nemici di David, se di tutti quelli che a lui appartengono, io lascerò vivo fino a domani un cane. | 22 God do so to David and more also, if by morning I leave so much as one male of all who belong to him." |
| 23 Abigail veduto che ebbe David, sceso in fretta dall'asino, e si gettò boccone dinanzi a David per terra, e lo adorò. | 23 When Abigail saw David, she made haste, and alighted from the ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed to the ground. |
| 24 E prostrata a' suoi piedi disse: A me s'imputi, signor mio, questa iniquità: sia lecito, te ne prego, alla tua serva di parlare: e presta orecchio a quel che dice la tua schiava. | 24 She fell at his feet and said, "Upon me alone, my lord, be the guilt; pray let your handmaid speak in your ears, and hear the words of your handmaid. |
| 25 Non far caso, ti prego, signor mio re, di quell’iniquo uomo di Nabal: perchè egli è stolto, come porta il suo nome, e la stoltezza lo domina. Io poi tua serva non vidi gli uomini mandati da te, signor mio. | 25 Let not my lord regard this ill-natured fellow, Nabal; for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him; but I your handmaid did not see the young men of my lord, whom you sent. |
| 26 Ma adesso, signor mio, viva il Signore, e viva l'anima tua, egli ti ha impedito di spargere il sangue, ed egli ha trattenuta la tua mano. Sieno adesso come Nabal i tuoi nemici, e que' che cercan di nuocere al mio signore. | 26 Now then, my lord, as the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, seeing the LORD has restrained you from bloodguilt, and from taking vengeance with your own hand, now then let your enemies and those who seek to do evil to my lord be as Nabal. |
| 27 Per la qual cosa accetta la benedizione portata dalla tua serva a te signor mio: e dalla a' servi che vengono dietro a te signore mio. | 27 And now let this present which your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow my lord. |
| 28 Rimetti alla tua serva questo peccato: imperocché sicuramente il Signore formerà per te, signor mio, una casa permanente, perchè tu, signor mio, pel Signore combatti: non sia adunque in te colpa veruna in tutto il tempo della tua vita. | 28 Pray forgive the trespass of your handmaid; for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord is fighting the battles of the LORD; and evil shall not be found in you so long as you live. |
| 29 Perocché se mai venisse alcuno a perseguitarti, e cercasse di levarti la vita, sarà l'anima del signor mio custodita nella serie de' viventi presso il Signore Dio tuo: ma l'anima de' tuoi nemici sarà agitata, come in un impetuoso girar di fionda. | 29 If men rise up to pursue you and to seek your life, the life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living in the care of the LORD your God; and the lives of your enemies he shall sling out as from the hollow of a sling. |
| 30 Quando adunque il Signore avrà dati a te, signor mio, tutti que’ beni, che ho predetto in favor tuo, e ti avrà costituito capo d'Israele, | 30 And when the LORD has done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you, and has appointed you prince over Israel, |
| 31 Non avrai tu, signor mio, questo rimorso, e questo peso al tuo cuore di avere sparso il sangue innocente, o di esserti vendicato da te stesso. E quando il Signore avrà dato del bene a te, signor mio, ti ricorderai della tua serva. | 31 my lord shall have no cause of grief, or pangs of conscience, for having shed blood without cause or for my lord taking vengeance himself. And when the LORD has dealt well with my lord, then remember your handmaid." |
| 32 E David disse ad Abigail: Benedetto il Signore Dio d'Israele, il quale ti ha oggi mandata incontro a me, e benedetto il tuo parlare. | 32 And David said to Abigail, "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me! |
| 33 E benedetta tu, la quale mi hai oggi impedito dallo spargere il sangue, e dal vendicarmi di mia mano. | 33 Blessed be your discretion, and blessed be you, who have kept me this day from bloodguilt and from avenging myself with my own hand! |
| 34 Altrimenti (viva il Signore Dio d’Israele, che mi ha proibito di farti del male) se tu non fossi prontamente venuta incontro a me, non sarebbe rimaso di qui al mattino un cane di Nabal. | 34 For as surely as the LORD the God of Israel lives, who has restrained me from hurting you, unless you had made haste and come to meet me, truly by morning there had not been left to Nabal so much as one male." |
| 35 Quindi ricevè Davidde dalle mani di lei tutto quello che ella avea portato, e dissele: Vattene in pace a casa tua: tu vedi com'io ti ho esaudita, e ho avuto riguardo per te. | 35 Then David received from her hand what she had brought him; and he said to her, "Go up in peace to your house; see, I have hearkened to your voice, and I have granted your petition." |
| 36 E Abigail tornò a casa di Nabal, e vide com'egli faceva banchetto in sua casa, quasi banchetto da re, e il cuore di Nabal era nell'allegria: perchè egli era zeppo di vino: ed ella non gli parlò, nè poco nè molto sino alla mattina. | 36 And Abigail came to Nabal; and, lo, he was holding a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. And Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk; so she told him nothing at all until the morning light. |
| 37 Ma allo spuntar del dì avendo Nabal digerito il suo vino, la moglie diede a lui parte di quel che era stato, e si freddò a lui il cuore, ed ei rimase come un sasso. | 37 And in the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. |
| 38 E di lì a dieci giorni il Signore punì Nabal, e si morì. | 38 And about ten days later the LORD smote Nabal; and he died. |
| 39 E David avendo udito come era morto Nabal, disse: Benedetto il Signore, il quale ha giudicato la causa degl'insulti fattimi da Nabal, e ha preservato il suo servo dal fare del male, e la malizia di Nabal l'ha fatta il Signore ricadere sulla sua testa. E David mandò a parlare ad Abigail per prenderla in moglie. | 39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, "Blessed be the LORD who has avenged the insult I received at the hand of Nabal, and has kept back his servant from evil; the LORD has returned the evil-doing of Nabal upon his own head." Then David sent and wooed Abigail, to make her his wife. |
| 40 E andarono i messi di David a trovare Abigail sul Carmelo, e le parlarono, e dissero: David ci ha mandati a te, perchè vuol prenderti in moglie. | 40 And when the servants of David came to Abigail at Carmel, they said to her, "David has sent us to you to take you to him as his wife." |
| 41 Ed ella alzatasi s'inchinò fino a toccar terra, e disse: Sia pure la tua serva in luogo di schiava per lavare i piedi de’ servi del mio signore. | 41 And she rose and bowed with her face to the ground, and said, "Behold, your handmaid is a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord." |
| 42 E Abigail si mosse in fretta, e montò sull'asino, e andarono con lei cinque fanciulle che la servivano, e seguì i messi di David, e divenne sua moglie. | 42 And Abigail made haste and rose and mounted on an ass, and her five maidens attended her; she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife. |
| 43 David parimente prese Achinoam (che era) di Jezrael: e furono l'una, e l’altra sue consorti. | 43 David also took Ahino-am of Jezreel; and both of them became his wives. |
| 44 E Saul diede la sua figlia Michol moglie di David, a Phalti figliuolo di Lais, che era di Gallim. | 44 Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was of Gallim. |
