1 ALEPH. Uom son io, che conosco la mia miseria sotto la verga dell'ira di lui.	1 I am a man who knows affliction from the rod of his anger,
2 ALEPH. Tra le tenebre mi ha condotto, e non al chiaror della luce.	2 One whom he has led and forced to walk in darkness, not in the light;
3 ALEPH. Non ha fatt'altro, che percuotermi, e ripercuotermi tutto giorno colla sua mano.	3 Against me alone he brings back his hand again and again all the day.
4 BETH. Ha fatta invecchiar la mia pelle, e la mia carne, ha stritolate le ossa mie.	4 He has worn away my flesh and my skin, he has broken my bones;
5 BETH. Ha alzato un muro intorno a me, e mi ha circondato di amarezze, e di affanni.	5 He has beset me round about with poverty and weariness;
6 BETH. Mi collocò in luoghi tenebrosi, come que', che son morti per sempre.	6 He has left me to dwell in the dark like those long dead.
7 GHIMEL. Mi serrò con ripari all'intorno, perch' io non ne esca: aggravò i miei ceppi.	7 He has hemmed me in with no escape and weighed me down with chains;
8 GHIMEL. Ed oltre a ciò, quand'io alzi le grida, e lo preghi, ha chiuso il varco alla mia orazione.	8 Even when I cry out for help, he stops my prayer;
9 GHIMEL. Mi ha chiuse le strade con pietre quadrate: ha ruinati i miei sentieri.	9 He has blocked my ways with fitted stones, and turned my paths aside.
10 DALETH. Egli è divenuto per me qual orso, che sta in aguato: come lione in luogo rimoto.	10 A lurking bear he has been to me, a lion in ambush!
11 DALETH. Egli ha rumati i miei sentieri, e mi ha straziato, mi ha abbandonato alla desolazione.	11 He deranged my ways, set me astray, left me desolate.
12 DALETH. Egli tese il suo arco, e mi fè come segno agli strali.	12 He bent his bow, and set me up as the target for his arrow.
13 HE. Ne' miei reni ha confitte le frecce del suo turcasso.	13 He pierces my sides with shafts from his quiver.
14 HE. Son divenuto il ludìbrio di tutto il mio popolo; la lor canzone per tutto il giorno.	14 I have become a laughingstock for all nations, their taunt all the day long;
15 HE. Mi ha ripieno di amarezza, mi ha inebriato di assenzio.	15 He has sated me with bitter food, made me drink my fill of wormwood.
16 VAU. Ed ha spezzati a uno a uno tutti i miei denti, mi ha cibato di cenere.	16 He has broken my teeth with gravel, pressed my face in the dust;
17 VAU. E bandita Dall'anima mia la pace; non so più che sia bene.	17 My soul is deprived of peace, I have forgotten what happiness is;
18 VAU. Ed io dissi: Ogni termine per me è sparito, e l'espettazione mia nel Signore.	18 I tell myself my future is lost, all that I hoped for from the LORD.
19 ZAIN. Ricorditi della miseria, miseria mia eccedente, e dell'assenzio, e del fiele.	19 The thought of my homeless poverty is wormwood and gall;
20 ZAIN. Queste cose ho di continuo alla memoria, e si strugge l'anima mia dentro di me.	20 Remembering it over and over leaves my soul downcast within me.
21 ZAIN. Queste cose riandando in cuor mio, per questo io spererò.	21 But I will call this to mind, as my reason to have hope:
22 HETH. Misericordia del Signore ell'è, che noi non siamo consunti: perchè non son mai venute meno le sue misericordie.	22 The favors of the LORD are not exhausted, his mercies are not spent;
23 HETH. Delle nuove ne sono ogni mattina: grandemente fedele se' tu.	23 They are renewed each morning, so great is his faithfulness.
24 HETH. Mia porzione è il Signore, disse l'anima mia: per questo io lo aspetterò.	24 My portion is the LORD, says my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
25 TETH. Buono è il Signore a que', che sperano in lui, all'anima, che lo cerca.	25 Good is the LORD to one who waits for him, to the soul that seeks him;
26 TETH. Buona cosa è l'aspettare in silenzio la salute di Dio.	26 It is good to hope in silence for the saving help of the LORD.
27 TETH. Buona cosa è per l'uomo l'aver portato il giogo fin dalla sua adolescenza.	27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke from his youth.
28 JOD. Ei sederà solitario, e si tacerà, perch'egli il giogo ha preso sopra di se.	28 Let him sit alone and in silence, when it is laid upon him.
29 JOD. Porrà la bocca sua nella polvere (cercando) se a sorte siavi speranza.	29 Let him put his mouth to the dust; there may yet be hope.
30 JOD. Porgerà la guancia a chi lo percuote: sarà satollato d'ignominie.	30 Let him offer his cheek to be struck, let him be filled with disgrace.
31 CAPH. Perocché non per sempre rigetterà da se il Signore.	31 For the Lord's rejection does not last forever;
32 CAPH. Perocché se egli ci ha rigettati, avrà anche pietà secondo le molte sue misericordie.	32 Though he punishes, he takes pity, in the abundance of his mercies;
33 CAPH. Perocché non di sua elezione egli umilia, e rigetta i figliuoli degli uomini,	33 He has no joy in afflicting or grieving the sons of men.
34 LAMED. Ma per calpestare sotto i suoi piedi tutti gli schiavi della terra,	34 When anyone tramples underfoot all the prisoners in the land,
35 LAMED. Pesare con non giusta bilancia la causa d'un uomo nel suo cospetto.	35 When he distorts men's rights in the very sight of the Most High,
36 LAMED. Ledere ingiustamente un uomo nel suo giudizio: ciò non sa fare il Signore.	36 When he presses a crooked claim, the Lord does not look on unconcerned.
37 MEM. Chi è colui, che ha detto, che si facesse una cosa, senza che il Signore la comandasse?	37 Who commands so that it comes to pass, except the Lord ordains it;
38 MEM. Non verran eglino dalla bocca del Signore i beni, ed i mali?	38 Except it proceeds from the mouth of the Most High, whether the thing be good or bad!
39 MEM. Perchè mai uomo vivente querelavasi dell'effetto de' suoi peccati?	39 Why should any living man complain, any mortal, in the face of his sins?
40 NUN. Disaminiamo, e facciam ricerca de' nostri andamenti, e torniamo al Signore.	40 Let us search and examine our ways that we may return to the LORD!
41 NUN. Alziamo al cielo insiem colle mani i cuori nostri al Signore.	41 Let us reach out our hearts toward God in heaven!
42 NUN. Noi iniquamente ci diportammo, e ti provocammo ad ira: per questo tu se' inesorabile.	42 We have sinned and rebelled; you have not forgiven us.
43 SAMECH. Tu ti cuopristi col tuo furore, e ci percuotesti: tu uccidesti, e non perdonasti.	43 You veiled yourself in wrath and pursued us, you slew us and took no pity;
44 SAMECH. Ti ponesti davanti una nuvola, perchè non arrivasse a te l'orazione.	44 You wrapped yourself in a cloud which prayer could not pierce.
45 SAMECH. Tu mi hai diradicato, e gettato per terra sulla faccia di tutti i popoli.	45 You have made us offscourings and refuse among the nations.
46 PHE. Tutti i nemici hanno aperta la loro bocca contro di noi.	46 All our enemies have opened their mouths against us;
47 PHE. La profezia fu per noi terrore, e laccio, e rovina.	47 Terror and the pit have been our lot, desolation and destruction;
48 PHE. Rivi di acque spargono gli occhi miei sopra l'afflizione della figliuola del popol mio.	48 My eyes run with streams of water over the downfall of the daughter of my people.
49 AIN. Il mio occhio è afflitto, né si dà posa, perchè requie alcuna non è,	49 My eyes flow without ceasing, there is no respite,
50 AIN. Fino a tanto che il Signore volga l'occhio dal cielo, e rimiri.	50 Till the LORD from heaven looks down and sees.
51 AIN. L'occhio mio è stato nemico della mia vita, in piangendo le figlie tutte della mia patria.	51 My eyes torment my soul at the sight of all the daughters of my city.
52 SADE. Come uccello alla caccia mi presero i miei nemici senza mia colpa.	52 Those who were my enemies without cause hunted me down like a bird;
53 SADE. E caduta l'anima mia nella fossa: hanno posta una pietra sopra di me.	53 They struck me down alive in the pit, and sealed me in with a stone.
54 SADE. Un diluvio di acque si è scaricato sulla mia testa: io dissi: Son perduto	54 The waters flowed over my head, and I said, "I am lost!"
55 COPH. Invocai il nome tuo o Signore,dalla fossa profonda.	55 I called upon your name, O LORD, from the bottom of the pit;
56 COPH. Tu ascoltasti la voce mia; or non chiuder le orecchie tue a' mie singulti, e a' miei clamori.	56 You heard me call, "Let not your ear be deaf to my cry for help!"
57 COPH. Tu ti appressasti nel giorno, ch'io ti invocai: dicesti: Non temere.	57 You came to my aid when I called to you; you said, "Have no fear!"
58 RES. Tu pronunziasti in favore dell'anima mia, o redentore della mia vita.	58 You defended me in mortal danger, you redeemed my life.
59 RES. Tu hai veduto, o Signore, l'iniquità loro inverso di me: fammi giustizia.	59 You see, O LORD, how I am wronged; do me justice!
60 RES. Tu vedesti i lor furori, e tutti i loro disegni contro di me.	60 You see all their vindictiveness, all their plots against me.
61 SIN. Tu udisti, o Signore, le lor villanie, e i lor pensieri contro di me;	61 You hear their insults, O LORD, (all their plots against me),
62 SIN. E le parole di color, che mi fanno guerra, e quel, ch'ei meditan tutto giorno contro di me.	62 The whispered murmurings of my foes, against me all the day;
63 SIN. Osserva come andando essi, e venendo, io sono la loro canzone.	63 Whether they sit or stand, see, I am their taunt song.
64 THAU. Tu renderai loro, o Signore, se condo le opere delle lor mani.	64 Requite them as they deserve, O LORD, according to their deeds;
65 THAU. Tu porrai sopra il cuor loro per iscudo gli attuimi, che lor manderai.	65 Give them hardness of heart, as your curse upon them;
66 THAU. Li perseguiterai col furor tuo, e lispergerai di sotto al cieli, o Signore.	66 Pursue them in wrath and destroy them from under your heavens!
