Siracide 48

1 E sorse il profeta Elia come un fuoco, e le parole di lui erano come ardente facella.	1 Then the prophet Elijah arose like a fire, his word flaring like a torch.
2 Egli fece venir contro di essi la fame, e quelli, che per invidia il perseguitavano, si ridussero a pochi; perocché non potevan coloro sopportare i comandamenti del Signore.	2 It was he who brought famine on them and decimated them in his zeal.
3 Egli colla parola del Signore chiuse il cielo, e tre volte fece dal cielo cadere il fuoco:	3 By the word of the Lord he shut up the heavens, three times also he brought down fire.
4 Cosi Elia si rendè glorioso co' suoi miracoli. E chi è, che possa gloriarsene al pari di te.	4 How glorious you were in your miracles, Elijah! Has anyone reason to boast as you have? -
5 Tu in virtù della parola di Dio Signore traesti un morto dall'inferno, e dalla giurisdizione della morte.	5 rousing a corpse from death, from Sheol, by the word of the Most High;
6 Tu abbattesti i regi, e con facilità, conquidesti la possanza di essi, e i gloriosi (facesti cadere) da' loro letti.	6 dragging kings down to destruction, and high dignitaries from their beds;
7 Tu ascoltasti sul Sina il giudizio, e sull'Horeb i decreti di vendetta.	7 hearing a rebuke on Sinai and decrees of punishment on Horeb;
8 Tu ungi dei regi, che faccian vendetta, e lasci dopo di te de' profeti tuoi successori.	8 anointing kings as avengers, and prophets to succeed you;
9 Tu fosti rapito in un turbine di fuoco sopra un cocchio tirato da cavalli di fuoco.	9 taken up in the whirlwind of fire, in a chariot with fiery horses;
10 Tu sei scritto ne' decreti dei tempi, come quegli, che placherai l'ira del Signore, riunirai il cuore del padre col figlio, e rimetterai in piedi le tribù di Giacobbe.	10 designated in the prophecies of doom to allay God's wrath before the fury breaks, to turn the hearts offathers towards their children, and to restore the tribes of Jacob.
11 Beati quei, che ti videro, ed ebber la gloria di averti per amico;	11 Blessed, those who wil see you, and those who have fal en asleep in love; for we too shal certainlyhave life.
12 Perocché noi questa sola vita viviamo, e dopo la morte tal non sarà il nostro nome	12 Such was Elijah, who was enveloped in a whirlwind; and Elisha was fil ed with his spirit; throughout hislife no ruler could shake him, and no one could subdue him.
13 Or Elia fu involto nel turbino, ed Eliseo ebbe la pienezza del suo spinto; egli ne' suoi tempi non temè alcun principe, e nissun lo vinse colla potenza:	13 No task was too hard for him, and even in death his body prophesied.
14 Né parola alcuna lo vinse, e il corpo morto di lui profetò.	14 In his lifetime he performed wonders, and in death his works were marvel ous.
15 Nel tempo di sua vita operò prodigj, e fece cose mirabili nella sua morte.	15 Despite al this the people did not repent, nor did they give up their sins, until they were herded out oftheir country and scattered al over the earth;
16 Ma per tutto qnesto il popolo non si pentì, e non lasciarono i loro peccati fino a tanto, che furono cacciati dal loro paese, e dispersi per tutta la terra:	16 only a few of the people were left, with a ruler of the House of David. Some of them did what pleasedthe Lord, others piled sin on sin.
17 E restò pochissima gente, e un prìncipe della casa di David.	17 Hezekiah fortified his city, and laid on a water-supply inside it; with iron he tunnelled through the rockand constructed storage-tanks.
18 Alcuni di essi fecero quello, che Dio voleva; altri poi fecer molti peccati.	18 In his days Sennacherib invaded and sent Rabshakeh; he lifted his hand against Zion, and boastedloudly in his arrogance.
19 Ezechia fortificò la città, e condusse acqua nel contro di essa, e scavò un masso a forza di ferro, e vi fece una cisterna per l'acqua.	19 Then their hearts and hands trembled, they felt the pangs of a woman in labour,
20 A tempo di lui venne Sennacherib, e spedi Rabsace, ed egli alzò la mano contro i Giudei, e la mano stese contro Sionne, di venuto superbo per le sue forze.	20 but they cal ed on the merciful Lord, stretching out their hands towards him. Swiftly the Holy Oneheard them from heaven and delivered them by the agency of Isaiah;
21 Allora furon commossi i loro cuori, e cadder loro le braccia, e dolori provarono come di donna, che partorisce.	21 he struck the camp of the Assyrians and his Angel annihilated them.
22 E invocarono il Signore misericordioso, e steser le mani, e le alzarono verso il cielo, e il Signore Dio santo udì tosto le voci loro.	22 For Hezekiah did what is pleasing to the Lord, and was steadfast in the ways of David his father,enjoined on him by the prophet Isaiah, a great man trustworthy in his vision.
23 Né si ricordò più de' loro peccati, e non li dette in balìa de' loro nemici, ma li purificò per mezzo di Isaia profeta santo.	23 In his days the sun moved back; he prolonged the life of the king.
24 Egli dissipò il campo degli Assirj, e l'Angelo del Signore gli sterminò:	24 In the power of the spirit he saw the last things, he comforted the mourners of Zion,
25 Perché Ezechia fece quello, che Dio voleva, e camminò nelle vie di David suo padre, come aveva a lui raccomandato Isaia profeta grande, e fedele nel cospetto del Signore.	25 he revealed the future to the end of time, and hidden things long before they happened.
26 A tempo di lui il sole tornò in dietro, ed egli prolungò la vita al re.
27 Egli con grande spirito vide gli ultimi tempi, e consolò i piangenti di Sion.
28 Egli dimostrò le cose, che hanno da essere sino all'eternità, e le cose nascoste prima, che succedessero.
