Siracide 13

1 Chi tocca la pece, si sporca di pece, e a chi conversa col superbo, si attaccherà la superbia.	1 He who touches pitch blackens his hand; he who associates with an impious man learns his ways.
2 Si mette un gran peso addosso chi fa lega con uno da più di lui. E non ti associare con chi è più ricco di te.	2 Bear no burden too heavy for you; go with no one greater or wealthier than yourself. How can the earthen pot go with the metal cauldron? When they knock together, the pot will be smashed:
3 Come staranno insieme un vaso di ferro, e uno di terra, il quale quando venga a urtare coll'altro sarà messo in pezzi?	3 The rich man does wrong and boasts of it, the poor man is wronged and begs forgiveness.
4 Il ricco farà ingiustizia, e fremerà; e il povero maltrattato starà zitto.	4 As long as the rich man can use you he will enslave you, but when you are exhausted, he will abandon you.
5 Se tu gli farai de' presenti, ti accoglierà; se non avrai che dare, ti abbandonerà.	5 As long as you have anything he will speak fair words to you, and with smiles he will win your confidence;
6 Se hai qualche cosa, banchetterà teco, e ti smugnerà, e non avrà compassione di te.	6 When he needs something from you he will cajole you, then without regret he will impoverish you.
7 Se avrà bisogno di te, ti gabberà, e con viso ridente ti darà delle speranze, ti prometterà monti di oro, e dirà: di che hai bisogno.	7 While it serves his purpose he will beguile you, then twice or three times he will terrify you; When later he sees you he will pass you by, and shake his head over you.
8 E ti confonderà co' suoi desinari fino a tanto, che in due, o tre volte ti rifinirà, e all'ultimo si burlerà di te, e poi vedendoti ti volterà le spalle, e scuoterà il capo contro di te.	8 Guard against being presumptuous; be not as those who lack sense.
9 Umiliati a Dio, e aspetta la sua mano.	9 When invited by a man of influence, keep your distance; then he will urge you all the more.
10 Bada, che sedotto tu non ti umilj stoltamente.	10 Be not bold with him lest you be rebuffed, but keep not too far away lest you be forgotten.
11 Guardati dall'esser umile in tua saggezza, affinchè umiliato che sarai, non sii sedotto a far cose da stolto.	11 Engage not freely in discussion with him, trust not his many words; For by prolonged talk he will test you, and though smiling he will probe you.
12 Se un potente ti chiama a se, tirati indietro; conciossiachè per questo appunto egli ti chiamerà, e richiamerà,	12 Mercilessly he will make of you a laughingstock, and will not refrain from injury or chains.
13 Non essere importuno per non esser cacciato via, e non tenerti tanto indietro da esser dimenticato.	13 Be on your guard and take care never to accompany men of violence.
14 Nol trattenere per parlare con lui come con un eguale, e non ti fidare delle molte parole di lui; perocché col farti parlar molto ti tenterà, e come per giuoco ti interrogherà per cavare da te i tuoi secreti.	14 Every living thing loves its own kind, every man a man like himself.
15 L'animo fiero di lui terrà conto di tue parole, e non si guarderà a farti del male, e a metterti in prigione.	15 Every being is drawn to its own kind; with his own kind every man associates.
16 Bada a te, e sta molto attento a quello, che ti senti dire; perché tu cammini sull'orlo del tuo precipizio.	16 Is a wolf ever allied with a lamb? So it is with the sinner and the just.
17 Ma tali cose ascoltando quasi in sogno, risvegliati.	17 Can there be peace between the hyena and the dog? Or between the rich and the poor can there be peace?
18 Per tutto il tempo di tua vita ama Dio, e invocalo per tua salvezza	18 Lion's prey are the wild asses of the desert; so too the poor are feeding grounds for the rich.
19 Ogni animale ama il suo simile, e così ogni uomo il suo prossimo.	19 A proud man abhors lowliness; so does the rich man abhor the poor.
20 Tutte le bestie fan società colle loro simili; cosi ogni uomo si unirà col suo simile.	20 When a rich man stumbles he is supported by a friend; when a poor man trips he is pushed down by a friend.
21 Se il lupo potrà qualche volta aver società coll'agnello, l'avrà anche il peccatore col giusto.	21 Many are the supporters for a rich man when he speaks; though what he says is odious, it wins approval. When a poor man speaks they make sport of him; he speaks wisely and no attention is paid him.
22 Qual relazione tra un uomo santo, e un cane? E qual unione tral ricco, ed il povero?	22 A rich man speaks and all are silent, his wisdom they extol to the clouds. A poor man speaks and they say: "Who is that?" If he slips they cast him down.
23 Preda del lione è l'asino salvatico nel deserto, e pastura de' ricchi sono i poveri.	23 Wealth is good when there is no sin; but poverty is evil by the standards of the proud.
24 Come il superbo ha in abbominio l'umiltà, còsi il ricco ha il povero in avversione.	24 The heart of a man changes his countenance, either for good or for evil.
25 Il ricco, che traballa è sostenuto da suoi amici; ma il povero, caduto che è, vien cacciato via anche da' familiari.	25 The sign of a good heart is a cheerful countenance; withdrawn and perplexed is the laborious schemer.
26 Il ricco, che ha errato ha molti, che lo sostengono: egli ha parlato con arroganza, e quelli lo giustificano.
27 Ma il povero, che fu gabbato, è ancor rampognato: parla sensatamente, e non gli è dato retta.
28 Il ricco parla, e tutti stan cheti, e innalzano fino alle nuvole le sue parole.
29 Parla il povero, e quelli dicono: chi è costui, e se inciampa lo getteranno per terra.
30 Buone son le ricchezze, le quali non hanno peccato sulla coscienza: ma pessima è la povertà a detta dell'empio.
31 Il cuore dell'uomo cangia il volto di lui o in bene, o in male.
32 Il buon viso argomento di buon cuore lo troverai difficilmente, e con pena.
