Geremia 18

BIBBIA TINTORI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Parola indirizzata dal Signore a Geremia, in questi termini:	1 The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh as fol ows,
2 « Alzati e scendi alla casa del vasaio, ove ascolterai le mie parole ».	2 'Get up and make your way down to the potter's house, and there I shal tell you what I have to say.'
3 Io discesi alla casa del vasaio: egli lavorava alla ruota.	3 So I went down to the potter's house; and there he was, working at the wheel.
4 E andò in pezzi il vaso d'argilla ch'egli faceva colle sue mani; ed egli ne fece un altro vaso, colla forma che gli sembrò meglio.	4 But the vessel he was making came out wrong, as may happen with clay when a potter is at work. Sohe began again and shaped it into another vessel, as he thought fit.
5 E il Signore mi rivolse la parola e mi disse:	5 Then the word of Yahweh came to me as follows,
6 « Forse io non posso fare a voi come questo vasaio, o casa d'Israele? — dice il Signore, — Ecco, come l'argilla è in mano del vasaio, cosi siete nella mia mano voi, o casa d'Israele.	6 'House of Israel, can I not do to you what this potter does? Yahweh demands. Yes, like clay in thepotter's hand, so you are in mine, House of Israel.
7 Appena avrò minacciato una nazione, un regno di sradicarlo, distruggerlo, annientarlo,	7 Sometimes I announce that I shal uproot, break down and destroy a certain nation or kingdom,
8 se quella nazione fa penitenza del suo male del quale la rimproveravo, anch'io mi pentirò del male che aveva risoluto di farle.	8 but should the nation I have threatened abandon its wickedness, I then change my mind about thedisaster which I had intended to inflict on it.
9 E appena avrò detto riguardo ad una nazione e ad un regno di fondarlo, di piantarlo,	9 Sometimes I announce that I shal build up and plant a certain nation or kingdom,
10 se farà del male al mio cospetto, e non darà ascolto alla mia voce, io mi pentirò del bene che aveva detto di farle.	10 but should that nation do what displeases me and refuse to listen to my voice, I then change my mindabout the good which I was intending to confer on it.
11 Or dunque di' agli uomini di Giuda e agli abitanti di Gerusalemme così: Queste cose dice il Signore: « Ecco, che io preparo contro di voi la sventura, formo contro di voi dei disegni. Ciascuno torni indietro dalla sua cattiva strada; rendete retta la condotta vostra, le vostre tendenze ».	11 So now, say this to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, "Yahweh says this: Listen, Iam preparing a disaster for you, I am working out a plan against you. So now, each one of you, turn back fromyour evil ways, amend your conduct and actions."
12 Ma essi a dire: « Non c'è speranza: noi seguiremo i nostri pensieri, agiremo ciascuno secondo la perversità del suo cattivo cuore ».	12 They, however, wil say, "It is no use! We shal follow our own plans; each of us wil act on his ownwicked inclinations." '
13 Per questo, così parla il Signore: « Domandatelo alle nazioni: chi mai udì simili cose, le orribili cose che troppe volte ha fatte la vergine d'Israele?	13 Therefore, Yahweh says this, 'Ask, please, among the nations if anyone has heard anything like this.The Virgin of Israel has done a very horrible thing.
14 Potrà mancare alle rocce campestri la neve del Libano? o togliersi le acque che vengono su con impeto e scorrono fresche?	14 Does the snow of Lebanon ever leave the rocks of its slopes? Do the rivers of foreign lands, their coldflowing waters, ever run dry?
15 Ma il mio popolo mi ha dimenticato ed ha fatte libazioni alla vanità, ha inciampato nelle sue vie, nei sentieri dei secoli, ed è andato a camminare per via non battuta,	15 And yet my people have forgotten me! They burn incense to a Nothing! They have been made tostumble in their ways, the ancient paths, to walk in paths, on an unmade road,
16 per far ridurre la sua terra in desolazione e in eterno scherno: chiunque vi passerà resterà stupefatto e scuoterà la sua testa.	16 to make their country an object of horror, everlastingly derided: every passer-by will be appal ed at itand shake his head.
17 Qual vento ardente io li disperderò davanti al nemico, volgerò loro le spalle e non la faccia nel giorno della loro perdizione. »	17 Like the east wind, I shal scatter them before the enemy. I shal show them my back, not my face, theday they are ruined.'
18 Ed essi dissero: « Venite, facciamo una congiura contro Geremia, perchè la legge non può mancare al sacerdote, il consiglio al sapiente, la parola al profeta. Venite, battiamolo colla lingua, senza dar retta ai tanti suoi discorsi ».	18 'Come on,' they said, 'let us concoct a plot against Jeremiah, for the Law will not perish for lack ofpriests, nor advice for lack of wise men, nor the word for lack of prophets. Come on, let us slander him and payno attention to anything he says.'
19 Signore, rivolgiti verso di me, ascolta quanto dicono i miei avversari.	19 Pay attention to me, Yahweh, hear what my adversaries are saying.
20 Si rende forse il male per il bene, giacché essi hanno scavata una fossa all'anima mia? Ricordati che io sono stato nel tuo cospetto, per parlare in loro favore, per allontanare da essi il tuo sdegno.	20 Should evil be returned for good? Now they are digging a pit for me. Remember how I pleaded beforeyou and spoke good of them, to turn your retribution away from them.
21 Per questo abbandona i loro figli alla fame, falli cadere, sotto la spada: le loro mogli restino senza figli e vedove, i loro mariti siano messi a morte, i loro giovani sian trafitti dalla spada in battaglia.	21 So, hand their sons over to famine, abandon them to the edge of the sword. Let their wives becomechildless and widowed. Let their husbands die of plague, their young men be cut down by the sword in battle.
22 Si sentano i gridi uscir dalle loro case: manderai adunque all'improvviso addosso a loro il ladrone, perchè essi hanno scavata la fossa per prendermi, hanno teso dei lacci ai miei piedi.	22 Let cries re-echo from their houses as you bring raiders suddenly on them. For they have dug a pit tocatch me, they have laid snares to trap my feet.
23 Ma tu, o Signore, ben conosci quanto tramano contro di me per farmi morire, non perdonare la loro iniquità, non si cancelli dinanzi a te il loro peccato, cadan per terra al tuo cospetto, maltrattali nel tempo del tuo furore.	23 But you, Yahweh, know all about their murderous plot against me. Do not forgive their guilt, do notefface their sin from your sight. Let them be hurled down before you, deal with them while you are angry!
