Siracide 21

1 Figliolo, hai peccato? Non peccar più, ma prega anche per le colpe passate, per ottenerne il perdono.	1 Son, have you sinned? You should not add further sins. Then too, for your former sins, pray so that they may be forgiven you.
2 Come dalla faccia del serpente, così fuggi dal peccato: se a lui ti accosti, ti morderà.	2 Flee from sins, as if from the face of a serpent. For if you approach them, they will take hold of you.
3 I suoi denti son denti di leoni che uccidono le anime degli uomini.	3 Their teeth are like the teeth of a lion, bringing death to the souls of men.
4 Come spada a doppio taglio è ogni colpa, e alla sua ferita non c'è rimedio.	4 All iniquity is like a two-edged spear; there is no healing in its wound.
5 L'arroganza e la violenza annientano le ricchezze. La casa della grande abbondanza sarà spiantata dalla superbia: così i beni dell'orgoglioso saranno sradicati.	5 Reproach and injury will make resources useless. And a house that is exceedingly wealthy will become powerless through pride. In this way, the resources of the arrogant will be eradicated.
6 Dalla bocca del povero la preghiera giungerà fino alle orecchie di Dio, e ben presto sarà a lui resa giustizia.	6 Supplications from the mouth of the pauper will reach all the way to the ears of God, and judgment will come to him quickly.
7 Chi odia la correzione segue la via del peccatore; ma chi teme Dio rientrerà in se stesso.	7 Whoever hates correction is walking in the steps of a sinner. But whoever fears God will convert within his heart.
8 Chi è potente per l'audacia della lingua si dà a conoscere da lontano, ma l'uomo assennato sa schivarlo.	8 He who has power by means of a bold tongue will be known from far away. But an understanding man knows to slip past him.
9 Chi si fabbrica la casa coi danari altrui è come colui che mette assieme le pietre nell'inverno.	9 Whoever builds his house, paid for by another, is like one who gathers his building stones in winter.
10 L'assemblea degli iniqui è stoppa ammucchiata, e finirà tra le fiamme ardenti.	10 The synagogue of sinners is like stubble piled up; for the end of them both is a burning fire.
11 La via dei peccatori è lastricata di pietre; ma va a finire all'inferno, nelle tenebre, nei tormenti.	11 The way of sinners is paved and level, and at their end is hell and darkness and punishments.
12 Chi osserva la legge domina i suoi istinti.	12 Whoever observes justice will obtain an understanding of it.
13 La perfezione del timor di Dio è sapienza e intelligenza.	13 The consummation of the fear of God is wisdom and understanding.
14 Non sarà istruito chi non è sapiente nel bene.	14 One who is not wise in goodness will not accept instruction.
15 Or v'è una sapienza feconda di male, ma non c'è sapienza dov'è l'amarezza.	15 Now there is a wisdom which abounds in evil. But there is no understanding where there is bitterness.
16 La scienza del sapiente traboccherà come inondazione, e il suo consiglio rimarrà come fonte di vita.	16 The knowledge of the wise will increase like a flood, and his counsel will continue like a fountain of life.
17 Il cuore dell'insensato è come un vaso rotto, e non può ritenere sapienza alcuna.	17 The heart of the foolish is like a broken vessel, for it will not hold any wisdom.
18 Qualunque parola abbia sentita l'uomo saggio, la loderà e se l'applicherà; se l'ascolta il voluttuoso, essa gli dispiacerà, e se la getterà dietro le spalle.	18 A knowledgeable man will praise any wise word he hears, and he will apply it to himself. The self-indulgent man has heard it, and it displeases him, and so he casts it behind his back.
19 Il racconto dello stolto è come un far dello nel viaggio, ma sui labbri del saggio si troverà la grazia.	19 The talk of the foolish is like a burden on a journey. But in the lips of the understanding, grace will be found.
20 La parola del prudente sarà ricercata nelle adunanze, e le sue parole saran meditate nei cuori.	20 The mouth of the prudent is sought in the Church, and they will consider his words in their hearts.
21 Come una casa rovinata, cosi è per lo stolto la sapienza, e la scienza dell'insensato consiste in parole senza senso.	21 Like a house which has been demolished, so is wisdom to the foolish. And the knowledge of the unwise is like meaningless words.
22 La disciplina è per lo stolto come ceppi ai piedi e come catene alla mano destra.	22 Doctrine to the senseless is like fetters on the feet, and like chains on the right hand.
23 Lo stolto fa strepito nel ridere, il sapiente invece nel ridere si farà appena sentire.	23 A foolish man lifts up his voice in laughter. But a wise man will not even laugh quietly to himself.
24 La dottrina è pel sapiente un ornamento d'oro, e come un braccia letto al polso destro.	24 Doctrine is to the prudent like a gold ornament, and like an armband on the right arm.
25 Il piede dello stolto entra facilmente in casa del prossimo, ma l'uomo accorto si vergognerà in faccia ai grandi.	25 The feet of the foolish step easily into his neighbor’s house. But an experienced man will be apprehensive in the presence of the powerful.
26 Lo stolto guarderà dentro la casa dalla finestra, ma l'uomo educato se ne starà fuori.	26 A senseless man will gaze through a window into the house. But a man who has been well-taught will stand outside.
27 E' umana stoltezza stare a origliare alla porta: il prudente ne sentirà la sconvenienza.	27 It is foolish for a man to listen through the door. And a prudent man will be grieved at this disgrace.
28 Le labbra degli imprudenti racconteranno cose assurde, ma le parole dei saggi saran pesate sulla bilancia.	28 The lips of the imprudent will describe senseless things. But the words of the prudent will be weighed on a balance.
29 Gli stolti hanno il cuore sulla bocca, i saggi invece hanno la bocca sul cuore.	29 The hearts of the foolish are in their mouths. But the mouths of the wise are with their hearts.
30 Quando l'empio maledice il diavolo, maledice l'anima propria.	30 Whenever the impious curse the devil, they curse their own soul.
31 Il delatore contaminerà l'anima propria, sarà odiato in ogni cosa, e chi starà con lui sarà malvisto; ma l'uomo silenzioso e di buon senso sarà onorato.	31 Those who whisper accusations defile their own souls, and they will be hated by all. And whoever abides with them will be hateful. The silent and understanding man will be honored.
