| 2 Ma Ismael figlio di Natania e i dieci uomini che aveva seco, levatisi, percossero Godolia figlio di Aicam, figlio di Safan, a colpi di spada e lo ammazzarono, pur essendo egli il governatore del paese messo dal re di Babilonia. | 2 Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the ten men with him rose up and struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, with the sword, and killed him, whom the king of Babylon had appointed governor in the land. |

| 6 Allora Ismael, figlio di Natania, uscito fuori di Masfa, si avanzò ad incontrarli a lenti passi e piangendo e giunto a loro incontro disse: «Voi venite a Godolia, figlio di Aicam». | 6 And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah came out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he came. As he met them, he said to them, "Come in to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam." |
| 7 Arrivati così nel centro della città, Ismael figlio di Natania, ne fece una carneficina, là nel mezzo, attorno alla cisterna, egli stesso e gli uomini che erano con lui. | 7 When they came into the city, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the men with him slew them, and cast them into a cistern. |
| 8 Fra costoro si trovarono dieci uomini i quali dissero a Ismael: «Non ci ammazzare, perchè abbiamo alla campagna provvigioni di frumento, orzo, olio e miele». Allora ristette e non li ammazzò coi loro compagni. | 8 But there were ten men among them who said to Ishmael, "Do not kill us, for we have stores of wheat, barley, oil, and honey hidden in the fields." So he refrained and did not kill them with their companions. |
| 9 La cisterna nella quale Ismael gettò tutti i cadaveri degli uomini che aveva assassinato, in conseguenza di Godolia, è quella che fece il re Asa per causa di Baasa re d'Israele; Ismael , figlio di Natania, la riempì dei corpi degli uccisi. | 9 Now the cistern into which Ishmael cast all the bodies of the men whom he had slain was the large cistern which King Asa had made for defense against Baasha king of Israel; Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain. |
| 10 Poi Ismael prese prigione tutto il restante del popolo che era in Masfa, le figlie del re, e tutti quei residui di popolazione che erano rimasti in Masfa, che Nabuzardan, capo delle milizie aveva dato in custodia a Godolia, figlio di Aicam. E Ismael, figlio di Natania, li prese prigionieri e si incamminò per passare ai figli di Ammon. | 10 Then Ishmael took captive all the rest of the people who were in Mizpah, the king's daughters and all the people who were left at Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. Ishmael the son of Nethaniah took them captive and set out to cross over to the Ammonites. |
| 11 Intanto Joanan, figlio di Caree e tutti i condottieri d'armi ch'eran con lui intesero tutto il male che Ismael figlio di Natania aveva perpetrato; | 11 But when Johanan the son of Kareah and all the leaders of the forces with him heard of all the evil which Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done, |
| 12 onde, raccolti tutti gli uomini, marciarono per piombare addosso a Ismael, figlio di Natania, e lo trovarono presso le abbondanti acque di Gabaon. | 12 they took all their men and went to fight against Ishmael the son of Nethaniah. They came upon him at the great pool which is in Gibeon. |
| 13 Non appena il popolo che era con Ismael vide Joanan figlio di Caree e tutti i condottieri d'armi ch'eran con lui, si rasserenò. | 13 And when all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah and all the leaders of the forces with him, they rejoiced. |
| 14 E ripiegando tutto insieme il popolo che Ismael aveva fatto prigioniero in Masfa, si voltò e si slanciò verso Joanan figlio di Caree. | 14 So all the people whom Ishmael had carried away captive from Mizpah turned about and came back, and went to Johanan the son of Kareah. |
| 15 Ismael, figlio di Natania invece con otto uomini si sottrasse colla fuga alla presenza di Joanan, e se ne andò ai figli di Ammon. | 15 But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men, and went to the Ammonites. |
| 16 Allora Joanan, figlio di Caree, e tutti i condottieri d'armi che erano con lui presero questi residui della popolazione che avevano riscosso dalle mani di Ismael, figlio di Natania, e da questo tolta da Masfa, dopo che aveva assassinato Godolia, figlio di Aicam, forti uomini di guerra e donne e fanciulli ed eunuchi che aveva ricondotto da Gabaon, | 16 Then Johanan the son of Kareah and all the leaders of the forces with him took all the rest of the people whom Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had carried away captive from Mizpah after he had slain Gedaliah the son of Ahikam--soldiers, women, children, and eunuchs, whom Johanan brought back from Gibeon. |
| 17 e si partirono e si fermarono campeggiando in Camaam, nei pressi di Betlemme, per poi proseguire ed entrare in Egitto, | 17 And they went and stayed at Geruth Chimham near Bethlehem, intending to go to Egypt |
| 18 lungi dalla presenza dei Caldei; avevano infatti paura di essi, dopo che Ismael, figlio di Natania, aveva assassinato Godolia, figlio di Aicam, che il re di Babilonia aveva messo governatore nel paese di Giuda. | 18 because of the Chaldeans; for they were afraid of them, because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had slain Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land. |
