1 Venuto il mattino, tutti i capi dei sacerdoti e gli anziani del popolo tennero consiglio contro Gesù per farlo morire.	1 When morning came, al the chief priests and the elders of the people met in council to bring about thedeath of Jesus.
2 Poi lo misero in catene, lo condussero via e lo consegnarono al governatore Pilato.	2 They had him bound and led him away to hand him over to Pilate, the governor.
3 Allora Giuda – colui che lo tradì –, vedendo che Gesù era stato condannato, preso dal rimorso, riportò le trenta monete d’argento ai capi dei sacerdoti e agli anziani,	3 When he found that Jesus had been condemned, then Judas, his betrayer, was fil ed with remorse andtook the thirty silver pieces back to the chief priests and elders
4 dicendo: «Ho peccato, perché ho tradito sangue innocente». Ma quelli dissero: «A noi che importa? Pensaci tu!».	4 saying, 'I have sinned. I have betrayed innocent blood.' They replied, 'What is that to us? That is yourconcern.'
5 Egli allora, gettate le monete d’argento nel tempio, si allontanò e andò a impiccarsi.	5 And flinging down the silver pieces in the sanctuary he made off, and went and hanged himself.
6 I capi dei sacerdoti, raccolte le monete, dissero: «Non è lecito metterle nel tesoro, perché sono prezzo di sangue».	6 The chief priests picked up the silver pieces and said, 'It is against the Law to put this into the treasury;it is blood-money.'
7 Tenuto consiglio, comprarono con esse il «Campo del vasaio» per la sepoltura degli stranieri.	7 So they discussed the matter and with it bought the potter's field as a graveyard for foreigners,
8 Perciò quel campo fu chiamato «Campo di sangue» fino al giorno d’oggi.	8 and this is why the field is stil cal ed the Field of Blood.
9 Allora si compì quanto era stato detto per mezzo del profeta Geremia: E presero trenta monete d’argento, il prezzo di colui che a tal prezzo fu valutato dai figli d’Israele,	9 The word spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was then fulfil ed: And they took the thirty silverpieces, the sum at which the precious One was priced by the children of Israel,
10 e le diedero per il campo del vasaio, come mi aveva ordinato il Signore.	10 and they gave them for the potter's field, just as the Lord directed me.
11 Gesù intanto comparve davanti al governatore, e il governatore lo interrogò dicendo: «Sei tu il re dei Giudei?». Gesù rispose: «Tu lo dici».	11 Jesus, then, was brought before the governor, and the governor put to him this question, 'Are you theking of the Jews?' Jesus replied, 'It is you who say it.'
12 E mentre i capi dei sacerdoti e gli anziani lo accusavano, non rispose nulla.	12 But when he was accused by the chief priests and the elders he refused to answer at al .
13 Allora Pilato gli disse: «Non senti quante testimonianze portano contro di te?».	13 Pilate then said to him, 'Do you not hear how many charges they have made against you?'
14 Ma non gli rispose neanche una parola, tanto che il governatore rimase assai stupito.	14 But to the governor's amazement, he offered not a word in answer to any of the charges.
15 A ogni festa, il governatore era solito rimettere in libertà per la folla un carcerato, a loro scelta.	15 At festival time it was the governor's practice to release a prisoner for the people, anyone they chose.
16 In quel momento avevano un carcerato famoso, di nome Barabba.	16 Now there was then a notorious prisoner whose name was Barabbas.
17 Perciò, alla gente che si era radunata, Pilato disse: «Chi volete che io rimetta in libertà per voi: Barabba o Gesù, chiamato Cristo?».	17 So when the crowd gathered, Pilate said to them, 'Which do you want me to release for you:Barabbas, or Jesus who is cal ed Christ?'
18 Sapeva bene infatti che glielo avevano consegnato per invidia.	18 For Pilate knew it was out of jealousy that they had handed him over.
19 Mentre egli sedeva in tribunale, sua moglie gli mandò a dire: «Non avere a che fare con quel giusto, perché oggi, in sogno, sono stata molto turbata per causa sua».	19 Now as he was seated in the chair of judgement, his wife sent him a message, 'Have nothing to dowith that upright man; I have been extremely upset today by a dream that I had about him.'
20 Ma i capi dei sacerdoti e gli anziani persuasero la folla a chiedere Barabba e a far morire Gesù.	20 The chief priests and the elders, however, had persuaded the crowd to demand the release ofBarabbas and the execution of Jesus.
21 Allora il governatore domandò loro: «Di questi due, chi volete che io rimetta in libertà per voi?». Quelli risposero: «Barabba!».	21 So when the governor spoke and asked them, 'Which of the two do you want me to release for you?'they said, 'Barabbas.'
22 Chiese loro Pilato: «Ma allora, che farò di Gesù, chiamato Cristo?». Tutti risposero: «Sia crocifisso!».	22 Pilate said to them, 'But in that case, what am I to do with Jesus who is cal ed Christ?' They al said,'Let him be crucified!'
23 Ed egli disse: «Ma che male ha fatto?». Essi allora gridavano più forte: «Sia crocifisso!».	23 He asked, 'But what harm has he done?' But they shouted all the louder, 'Let him be crucified!'
24 Pilato, visto che non otteneva nulla, anzi che il tumulto aumentava, prese dell’acqua e si lavò le mani davanti alla folla, dicendo: «Non sono responsabile di questo sangue. Pensateci voi!».	24 Then Pilate saw that he was making no impression, that in fact a riot was imminent. So he took somewater, washed his hands in front of the crowd and said, 'I am innocent of this man's blood. It is your concern.'
25 E tutto il popolo rispose: «Il suo sangue ricada su di noi e sui nostri figli».	25 And the people, every one of them, shouted back, 'Let his blood be on us and on our children!'
26 Allora rimise in libertà per loro Barabba e, dopo aver fatto flagellare Gesù, lo consegnò perché fosse crocifisso.	26 Then he released Barabbas for them. After having Jesus scourged he handed him over to becrucified.
27 Allora i soldati del governatore condussero Gesù nel pretorio e gli radunarono attorno tutta la truppa.	27 Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus with them into the Praetorium and col ected the whole cohortround him.
28 Lo spogliarono, gli fecero indossare un mantello scarlatto,	28 And they stripped him and put a scarlet cloak round him,
29 intrecciarono una corona di spine, gliela posero sul capo e gli misero una canna nella mano destra. Poi, inginocchiandosi davanti a lui, lo deridevano: «Salve, re dei Giudei!».	29 and having twisted some thorns into a crown they put this on his head and placed a reed in his righthand. To make fun of him they knelt to him saying, 'Hail, king of the Jews!'
30 Sputandogli addosso, gli tolsero di mano la canna e lo percuotevano sul capo.	30 And they spat on him and took the reed and struck him on the head with it.
31 Dopo averlo deriso, lo spogliarono del mantello e gli rimisero le sue vesti, poi lo condussero via per crocifiggerlo.	31 And when they had finished making fun of him, they took off the cloak and dressed him in his ownclothes and led him away to crucifixion.
32 Mentre uscivano, incontrarono un uomo di Cirene, chiamato Simone, e lo costrinsero a portare la sua croce.	32 On their way out, they came across a man from Cyrene, cal ed Simon, and enlisted him to carry hiscross.
33 Giunti al luogo detto Gòlgota, che significa «Luogo del cranio»,	33 When they had reached a place cal ed Golgotha, that is, the place of the skul ,
34 gli diedero da bere vino mescolato con fiele. Egli lo assaggiò, ma non ne volle bere.	34 they gave him wine to drink mixed with gal , which he tasted but refused to drink.
35 Dopo averlo crocifisso, si divisero le sue vesti, tirandole a sorte.	35 When they had finished crucifying him they shared out his clothing by casting lots,
36 Poi, seduti, gli facevano la guardia.	36 and then sat down and stayed there keeping guard over him.
37 Al di sopra del suo capo posero il motivo scritto della sua condanna: «Costui è Gesù, il re dei Giudei».	37 Above his head was placed the charge against him; it read: 'This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.'
38 Insieme a lui vennero crocifissi due ladroni, uno a destra e uno a sinistra.	38 Then two bandits were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.
39 Quelli che passavano di lì lo insultavano, scuotendo il capo	39 The passers-by jeered at him; they shook their heads
40 e dicendo: «Tu, che distruggi il tempio e in tre giorni lo ricostruisci, salva te stesso, se tu sei Figlio di Dio, e scendi dalla croce!».	40 and said, 'So you would destroy the Temple and in three days rebuild it! Then save yourself if you areGod's son and come down from the cross!'
41 Così anche i capi dei sacerdoti, con gli scribi e gli anziani, facendosi beffe di lui dicevano:	41 The chief priests with the scribes and elders mocked him in the same way,
42 «Ha salvato altri e non può salvare se stesso! È il re d’Israele; scenda ora dalla croce e crederemo in lui.	42 with the words, 'He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the king of Israel; let him come downfrom the cross now, and we wil believe in him.
43 Ha confidato in Dio; lo liberi lui, ora, se gli vuol bene. Ha detto infatti: “Sono Figlio di Dio”!».	43 He has put his trust in God; now let God rescue him if he wants him. For he did say, "I am God'sson." '
44 Anche i ladroni crocifissi con lui lo insultavano allo stesso modo.	44 Even the bandits who were crucified with him taunted him in the same way.
45 A mezzogiorno si fece buio su tutta la terra, fino alle tre del pomeriggio.	45 From the sixth hour there was darkness over al the land until the ninth hour.
46 Verso le tre, Gesù gridò a gran voce: «Elì, Elì, lemà sabactàni?», che significa: «Dio mio, Dio mio, perché mi hai abbandonato?».	46 And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Eli, eli, lama sabachthani?' that is, 'MyGod, my God, why have you forsaken me?'
47 Udendo questo, alcuni dei presenti dicevano: «Costui chiama Elia».	47 When some of those who stood there heard this, they said, 'The man is cal ing on Elijah,'
48 E subito uno di loro corse a prendere una spugna, la inzuppò di aceto, la fissò su una canna e gli dava da bere.	48 and one of them quickly ran to get a sponge which he fil ed with vinegar and, putting it on a reed,gave it him to drink.
49 Gli altri dicevano: «Lascia! Vediamo se viene Elia a salvarlo!».	49 But the rest of them said, 'Wait! And see if Elijah wil come to save him.'
50 Ma Gesù di nuovo gridò a gran voce ed emise lo spirito.	50 But Jesus, again crying out in a loud voice, yielded up his spirit.
51 Ed ecco, il velo del tempio si squarciò in due, da cima a fondo, la terra tremò, le rocce si spezzarono,	51 And suddenly, the veil of the Sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth quaked, therocks were split,
52 i sepolcri si aprirono e molti corpi di santi, che erano morti, risuscitarono.	52 the tombs opened and the bodies of many holy people rose from the dead,
53 Uscendo dai sepolcri, dopo la sua risurrezione, entrarono nella città santa e apparvero a molti.	53 and these, after his resurrection, came out of the tombs, entered the holy city and appeared to anumber of people.
54 Il centurione, e quelli che con lui facevano la guardia a Gesù, alla vista del terremoto e di quello che succedeva, furono presi da grande timore e dicevano: «Davvero costui era Figlio di Dio!».	54 The centurion, together with the others guarding Jesus, had seen the earthquake and al that wastaking place, and they were terrified and said, 'In truth this man was son of God.'
55 Vi erano là anche molte donne, che osservavano da lontano; esse avevano seguito Gesù dalla Galilea per servirlo.	55 And many women were there, watching from a distance, the same women who had followed Jesusfrom Galilee and looked after him.
56 Tra queste c’erano Maria di Màgdala, Maria madre di Giacomo e di Giuseppe, e la madre dei figli di Zebedeo.	56 Among them were Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother ofZebedee's sons.
57 Venuta la sera, giunse un uomo ricco, di Arimatea, chiamato Giuseppe; anche lui era diventato discepolo di Gesù.	57 When it was evening, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, cal ed Joseph, who had himself becomea disciple of Jesus.
58 Questi si presentò a Pilato e chiese il corpo di Gesù. Pilato allora ordinò che gli fosse consegnato.	58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be handed over.
59 Giuseppe prese il corpo, lo avvolse in un lenzuolo pulito	59 So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean shroud
60 e lo depose nel suo sepolcro nuovo, che si era fatto scavare nella roccia; rotolata poi una grande pietra all’entrata del sepolcro, se ne andò.	60 and put it in his own new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock. He then rol ed a large stoneacross the entrance of the tomb and went away.
61 Lì, sedute di fronte alla tomba, c’erano Maria di Màgdala e l’altra Maria.	61 Now Mary of Magdala and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the sepulchre.
62 Il giorno seguente, quello dopo la Parasceve, si riunirono presso Pilato i capi dei sacerdoti e i farisei,	62 Next day, that is, when Preparation Day was over, the chief priests and the Pharisees went in a bodyto Pilate
63 dicendo: «Signore, ci siamo ricordati che quell’impostore, mentre era vivo, disse: “Dopo tre giorni risorgerò”.	63 and said to him, 'Your Excel ency, we recal that this impostor said, while he was still alive, "Afterthree days I shall rise again."
64 Ordina dunque che la tomba venga vigilata fino al terzo giorno, perché non arrivino i suoi discepoli, lo rubino e poi dicano al popolo: “È risorto dai morti”. Così quest’ultima impostura sarebbe peggiore della prima!».	64 Therefore give the order to have the sepulchre kept secure until the third day, for fear his disciplescome and steal him away and tel the people, "He has risen from the dead." This last piece of fraud would beworse than what went before.'
65 Pilato disse loro: «Avete le guardie: andate e assicurate la sorveglianza come meglio credete».	65 Pilate said to them, 'You may have your guard; go and make al as secure as you know how.'
66 Essi andarono e, per rendere sicura la tomba, sigillarono la pietra e vi lasciarono le guardie.	66 So they went and made the sepulchre secure, putting seals on the stone and mounting a guard.
