BIBBIA CEI 2008	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Làbano si alzò di buon mattino, baciò i figli e le figlie e li benedisse. Poi partì e ritornò a casa.	1 Early next morning, Laban kissed his grandchildren and daughters and blessed them. Then Laban leftto return home.
2 Mentre Giacobbe andava per la sua strada, gli si fecero incontro gli angeli di Dio.	2 While Jacob was going on his way, angels of God encountered him,
3 Giacobbe al vederli disse: «Questo è l’accampamento di Dio», e chiamò quel luogo Macanàim.	3 and on seeing them he said, 'This is God's camp,' and he named the place Mahanaim.
4 Poi Giacobbe mandò avanti a sé alcuni messaggeri al fratello Esaù, nella regione di Seir, la campagna di Edom.	4 Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in Seir, the open country of Edom,
5 Diede loro questo comando: «Direte al mio signore Esaù: “Dice il tuo servo Giacobbe: Sono restato come forestiero presso Làbano e vi sono rimasto fino ad ora.	5 with these instructions, 'Say this to my lord Esau, "Here is the message of your servant Jacob: I havebeen staying with Laban and have been delayed there until now,
6 Sono venuto in possesso di buoi, asini e greggi, di schiavi e schiave. Ho mandato a informarne il mio signore, per trovare grazia ai suoi occhi”».	6 and I own oxen, beasts of burden and flocks, and men and women slaves. I send news of this to mylord in the hope of winning your favour." '
7 I messaggeri tornarono da Giacobbe, dicendo: «Siamo stati da tuo fratello Esaù; ora egli stesso sta venendoti incontro e ha con sé quattrocento uomini».	7 The messengers returned to Jacob and told him, 'We went to your brother Esau, and he is already onhis way to meet you; there are four hundred men with him.'
8 Giacobbe si spaventò molto e si sentì angustiato; allora divise in due accampamenti la gente che era con lui, il gregge, gli armenti e i cammelli.	8 Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed. He divided the people with him, and the flocks and cattle,into two camps,
9 Pensava infatti: «Se Esaù raggiunge un accampamento e lo sconfigge, l’altro si salverà».	9 thinking, 'If Esau comes to one of the camps and attacks it, the remaining camp may be able toescape.'
10 Giacobbe disse: «Dio del mio padre Abramo e Dio del mio padre Isacco, Signore, che mi hai detto: “Ritorna nella tua terra e tra la tua parentela, e io ti farò del bene”,	10 Jacob said, 'God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh who told me, "Go backto your native land and I will be good to you,"
11 io sono indegno di tutta la bontà e di tutta la fedeltà che hai usato verso il tuo servo. Con il mio solo bastone avevo passato questo Giordano e ora sono arrivato al punto di formare due accampamenti.	11 I am unworthy of al the faithful love and constancy you have shown your servant. I had only my staffwhen I crossed this Jordan, and now I have grown into two camps.
12 Salvami dalla mano di mio fratello, dalla mano di Esaù, perché io ho paura di lui: che egli non arrivi e colpisca me e, senza riguardi, madri e bambini!	12 I implore you, save me from my brother Esau's clutches, for I am afraid that he may come and attackme, mothers and children alike.
13 Eppure tu hai detto: “Ti farò del bene e renderò la tua discendenza tanto numerosa come la sabbia del mare, che non si può contare”».	13 Yet it was you who said, "I shal be very good to you, and make your descendants like the sand ofthe sea, which is too numerous to count." '
14 Giacobbe rimase in quel luogo a passare la notte. Poi prese, da ciò che gli capitava tra mano, un dono per il fratello Esaù:	14 Then Jacob passed that night there. From what he had with him he chose a gift for his brother Esau:
15 duecento capre e venti capri, duecento pecore e venti montoni,	15 two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,
16 trenta cammelle, che allattavano, con i loro piccoli, quaranta giovenche e dieci torelli, venti asine e dieci asinelli.	16 thirty camels in milk with their calves, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male.
17 Egli affidò ai suoi servi i singoli branchi separatamente e disse loro: «Passate davanti a me e lasciate una certa distanza tra un branco e l’altro».	17 He put them in the charge of his servants, in separate droves, and told his servants, 'Go ahead ofme, leaving a space between each drove and the next.'
18 Diede quest’ordine al primo: «Quando ti incontrerà Esaù, mio fratello, e ti domanderà: “A chi appartieni? Dove vai? Di chi sono questi animali che ti camminano davanti?”,	18 He gave the leading man this order: 'When my brother Esau meets you and asks, "Whose man areyou? Where are you going? Whose are those animals that you are driving?"
19 tu risponderai: “Di tuo fratello Giacobbe; è un dono inviato al mio signore Esaù; ecco, egli stesso ci segue”».	19 you wil answer, "Your servant Jacob's. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau. And Jacob himself isjust behind us." '
20 Lo stesso ordine diede anche al secondo e anche al terzo e a quanti seguivano i branchi: «Queste parole voi rivolgerete ad Esaù quando lo incontrerete;	20 He gave the same order to the second and the third, and to al who were fol owing the droves. 'Thatis what you must say to Esau when you find him.
21 gli direte: “Anche il tuo servo Giacobbe ci segue”». Pensava infatti: «Lo placherò con il dono che mi precede e in seguito mi presenterò a lui; forse mi accoglierà con benevolenza».	21 And you must add, "Your servant Jacob himself is just behind us." ' For he thought, 'If I conciliate him by sending a gift in advance, perhaps he will be well inclined towards me when I face him.'
22 Così il dono passò prima di lui, mentre egli trascorse quella notte nell’accampamento.	22 The gift went ahead of him, but he himself spent that night in the camp.
23 Durante quella notte egli si alzò, prese le due mogli, le due schiave, i suoi undici bambini e passò il guado dello Iabbok.	23 That same night he got up and, taking his two wives, his two slave-girls and his eleven children,crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
24 Li prese, fece loro passare il torrente e portò di là anche tutti i suoi averi.	24 After he had taken them across the stream, he sent al his possessions over too.
25 Giacobbe rimase solo e un uomo lottò con lui fino allo spuntare dell’aurora.	25 And Jacob was left alone. Then someone wrestled with him until daybreak
26 Vedendo che non riusciva a vincerlo, lo colpì all’articolazione del femore e l’articolazione del femore di Giacobbe si slogò, mentre continuava a lottare con lui.	26 who, seeing that he could not master him, struck him on the hip socket, and Jacob's hip wasdislocated as he wrestled with him.

28 Gli domandò: «Come ti chiami?». Rispose: «Giacobbe».	28 The other said, 'What is your name?' 'Jacob,' he replied.
29 Riprese: «Non ti chiamerai più Giacobbe, ma Israele, perché hai combattuto con Dio e con gli uomini e hai vinto!».	29 He said, 'No longer are you to be cal ed Jacob, but Israel since you have shown your strengthagainst God and men and have prevailed.'
30 Giacobbe allora gli chiese: «Svelami il tuo nome». Gli rispose: «Perché mi chiedi il nome?». E qui lo benedisse.	30 Then Jacob asked, 'Please tel me your name.' He replied, 'Why do you ask my name?' With that, heblessed him there.
31 Allora Giacobbe chiamò quel luogo Penuèl: «Davvero – disse – ho visto Dio faccia a faccia, eppure la mia vita è rimasta salva».	31 Jacob named the place Peniel, 'Because I have seen God face to face,' he said, 'and have survived.'
32 Spuntava il sole, quando Giacobbe passò Penuèl e zoppicava all’anca.	32 The sun rose as he passed Peniel, limping from his hip.
33 Per questo gli Israeliti, fino ad oggi, non mangiano il nervo sciatico, che è sopra l’articolazione del femore, perché quell’uomo aveva colpito l’articolazione del femore di Giacobbe nel nervo sciatico.	33 That is why to this day the Israelites do not eat the thigh sinew which is at the hip socket: because hehad struck Jacob at the hip socket on the thigh sinew.
