NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
In illo tempore audivit He rodes tetrarcha famam Iesu1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the reputation of Jesus
et ait puerissuis: “ Hic est Ioannes Baptista; ipse surrexit a mortuis, et ideo virtutesoperantur in eo ”.2 and said to his court, 'This is John the Baptist himself; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.'
Herodes enim tenuit Ioannem et alligavit eum et posuit incarcere propter Herodiadem uxorem Philippi fratris sui.3 Now it was Herod who had arrested John, chained him up and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.
Dicebat enim illiIoannes: “ Non licet tibi habere eam ”.4 For John had told him, 'It is against the Law for you to have her.'
Et volens illum occidere, timuitpopulum, quia sicut prophetam eum habebant.
He had wanted to kil him but was afraid of the people, who regarded John as a prophet.
Die autem natalis Herodis saltavit filia Herodiadis in medio et placuitHerodi,6 Then, during the celebrations for Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before thecompany and so delighted Herod
unde cum iuramento pollicitus est ei dare, quodcumque postulasset.7 that he promised on oath to give her anything she asked.
At illa, praemonita a matre sua: “ Da mihi, inquit, hic in disco caput IoannisBaptistae ”.8 Prompted by her mother she said, 'Give me John the Baptist's head, here, on a dish.'
Et contristatus rex propter iuramentum et eos, qui pariterrecumbebant, iussit dari9 The king was distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he ordered it to begiven her,
misitque et decollavit Ioannem in carcere;10 and sent and had John beheaded in the prison.
etallatum est caput eius in disco et datum est puellae, et tulit matri suae.11 The head was brought in on a dish and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.
Etaccedentes discipuli eius tulerunt corpus et sepelierunt illud et venientesnuntiaverunt Iesu.
John's disciples came and took the body and buried it; then they went off to tell Jesus.
Quod cum audisset Iesus, secessit inde in navicula in locum desertum seorsum;et cum audissent, turbae secutae sunt eum pedestres de civitatibus.13 When Jesus received this news he withdrew by boat to a lonely place where they could be bythemselves. But the crowds heard of this and, leaving the towns, went after him on foot.
Et exiensvidit turbam multam et misertus est eorum et curavit languidos eorum.14 So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them and healed their sick.
Vespereautem facto, accesserunt ad eum discipuli dicentes: “ Desertus est locus, ethora iam praeteriit; dimitte turbas, ut euntes in castella emant sibi escas ”.15 When evening came, the disciples went to him and said, 'This is a lonely place, and time has slippedby; so send the people away, and they can go to the vil ages to buy themselves some food.'
Iesus autem dixit eis: “ Non habent necesse ire; date illis vos manducare”.16 Jesus replied, 'There is no need for them to go: give them something to eat yourselves.'
Illi autem dicunt ei: “ Non habemus hic nisi quinque panes et duospisces ”.17 But they answered, 'All we have with us is five loaves and two fish.'
Qui ait: “ Afferte illos mihi huc ”.18 So he said, 'Bring them here to me.'
Et cum iussissetturbas discumbere supra fenum, acceptis quinque panibus et duobus piscibus, aspiciens in caelum benedixit et fregit et dedit discipulis panes, discipuliautem turbis.19 He gave orders that the people were to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and thetwo fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing. And breaking the loaves he handed them to hisdisciples, who gave them to the crowds.
Et manducaverunt omnes et saturati sunt; et tulerunt reliquiasfragmentorum duodecim cophinos plenos.20 They al ate as much as they wanted, and they col ected the scraps left over, twelve baskets full.
Manducantium autem fuit numerus ferequinque milia virorum, exceptis mulieribus et parvulis.
Now about five thousand men had eaten, to say nothing of women and children.
Et statim iussit discipulos ascendere in naviculam et praecedere eum transfretum, donec dimitteret turbas.22 And at once he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he sentthe crowds away.
Et dimissis turbis, ascendit in montem solusorare. Vespere autem facto, solus erat ibi.
After sending the crowds away he went up into the hil s by himself to pray. When evening came, hewas there alone,
Navicula autem iam multis stadiis a terra distabat, fluctibus iactata; eratenim contrarius ventus.24 while the boat, by now some furlongs from land, was hard pressed by rough waves, for there was ahead-wind.
Quarta autem vigilia noctis venit ad eos ambulanssupra mare.25 In the fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea,
Discipuli autem, videntes eum supra mare ambulantem, turbati suntdicentes: “ Phantasma est ”, et prae timore clamaverunt.26 and when the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. 'It is a ghost,' they said, andcried out in fear.
Statimque Iesuslocutus est eis dicens: “ Habete fiduciam, ego sum; nolite timere! ”.27 But at once Jesus cal ed out to them, saying, 'Courage! It's me! Don't be afraid.'
Respondens autem ei Petrus dixit: “ Domine, si tu es, iube me venire ad tesuper aquas ”.28 It was Peter who answered. 'Lord,' he said, 'if it is you, tel me to come to you across the water.'
At ipse ait: “ Veni! ”. Et descendens Petrus de naviculaambulavit super aquas et venit ad Iesum.29 Jesus said, 'Come.' Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across thewater,
Videns vero ventum validum timuitet, cum coepisset mergi, clamavit dicens: “ Domine, salvum me fac! ”.30 but then noticing the wind, he took fright and began to sink. 'Lord,' he cried, 'save me!'
Continuo autem Iesus extendens manum apprehendit eum et ait illi: “ Modicaefidei, quare dubitasti? ”.31 Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. 'You have so little faith,' he said, 'why did you doubt?'
Et cum ascendissent in naviculam, cessavitventus.32 And as they got into the boat the wind dropped.
Qui autem in navicula erant, adoraverunt eum dicentes: “ VereFilius Dei es! ”.
The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, 'Truly, you are the Son of God.'
Et cum transfretassent, venerunt in terram Gennesaret.34 Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.
Et cum cognovissenteum viri loci illius, miserunt in universam regionem illam et obtulerunt eiomnes male habentes,35 When the local people recognised him they spread the news through the whole neighbourhood andtook al that were sick to him,
et rogabant eum, ut vel fimbriam vestimenti eiustangerent; et, quicumque tetigerunt, salvi facti sunt.
begging him just to let them touch the fringe of his cloak. And al those who touched it were saved.
