NOVA VULGATANEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 In tribus placitum est spiritui meo,
quae sunt probata coram Deo et hominibus:
1 With three things I am delighted, for they are pleasing to the LORD and to men: Harmony among brethren, friendship among neighbors, and the mutual love of husband and wife.
2 concordia fratrum et amor proximorum
et vir et mulier bene sibi consentientes.
2 Three kinds of men I hate; their manner of life I loathe indeed: A proud pauper, a rich dissembler, and an old man lecherous in his dotage.
3 Tres species odivit anima mea,
et aggravor valde animae illorum:
3 What you have not saved in your youth, how will you acquire in your old age?
4 pauperem superbum, divitem mendacem,
senem fatuum et insensatum.
4 How becoming to the gray-haired is judgment, and a knowledge of counsel to those on in years!
5 In iuventute tua non congregasti;
quomodo in senectute tua invenies?
5 How becoming to the aged is wisdom, understanding and prudence to the venerable!
6 Quam speciosum canitiei iudicium,
et presbyteris cognoscere consilium!
6 The crown of old men is wide experience; their glory, the fear of the LORD.
7 Quam speciosa veteranis sapientia,
et gloriosis intellectus et consilium!
7 There are nine who come to my mind as blessed, a tenth whom my tongue proclaims: The man who finds joy in his children, and he who lives to see his enemies' downfall.
8 Corona senum multa peritia,
et gloria illorum timor Dei.
8 Happy is he who dwells with a sensible wife, and he who plows not like a donkey yoked with an ox. Happy is he who sins not with his tongue, and he who serves not his inferior.
9 Novem insuspicabilia cordis magnificavi,
et decimum dicam in lingua hominibus:
9 Happy is he who finds a friend and he who speaks to attentive ears.
10 homo, qui iucundatur in filiis,
vivens et videns subversionem inimicorum suorum;
10 He who finds wisdom is great indeed, but not greater than he who fears the LORD.
11 beatus, qui habitat cum muliere sensata
et non arat in bove et in asino simul;
et qui lingua sua non est lapsus,
et qui non servivit indigno se;
11 Fear of the LORD surpasses all else. its possessor is beyond compare.
12 beatus, qui invenit amicum verum,
et qui enarrat iustitiam auri audienti;
12 Worst of all wounds is that of the heart, worst of all evils is that of a woman.
13 quam magnus, qui invenit sapientiam et scientiam,
sed non est super timentem Dominum.
13 Worst of all sufferings is that from one's foes, worst of all vengeance is that of one's enemies:
14 Timor Dei super omnia excedit;
14 No poison worse than that of a serpent, no venom greater than that of a woman.
15 qui tenet illum, cui assimilabitur?
15 With a dragon or a lion I would rather dwell than live with an evil woman.
16 Timor Dei initium dilectionis eius;
fides autem initium adhaesionis ei.
16 Wickedness changes a woman's looks, and makes her sullen as a female bear.
17 Omnis plaga tristitia cordis est,
et omnis malitia nequitia mulieris.
17 When her husband sits among his neighbors, a bitter sigh escapes him unawares.
18 Et omnem plagam et non plagam cordis;
18 There is scarce any evil like that in a woman; may she fall to the lot of the sinner!
19 et omnem nequitiam et non nequitiam mulieris;
19 Like a sandy hill to aged feet is a railing wife to a quiet man.
20 et omnem calamitatem et non calamitatem odientium;
20 Stumble not through woman's beauty, nor be greedy for her wealth;
21 et omnem vindictam et non vindictam inimicorum.
21 The man is a slave, in disgrace and shame, when a wife supports her husband.
22 Non est venenum nequius super venenum colubri,
22 Depressed mind, saddened face, broken heart--this from an evil wife. Feeble hands and quaking knees-- from a wife who brings no happiness to her husband.
23 et non est ira super iram mulieris;
commorari leoni et draconi placebit
quam habitare cum muliere nequam.
23 In woman was sin's beginning, and because of her we all die.
24 Nequitia mulieris immutat faciem eius
et obscurat vultum eius tamquam ursus.
In medio proximorum eius accumbet vir eius
24 Allow water no outlet, and be not indulgent to an erring wife.
25 et invitus suspirabit amare.
25 If she walks not by your side, cut her away from you.
26 Parva omnis malitia prae malitia mulieris:
sors peccatorum cadat super illam.
27 Sicut ascensus arenosus in pedibus veterani,
sic mulier linguata homini quieto.
28 Ne incidas in mulieris speciem
et non concupiscas mulieris opes.
29 Ira et irreverentia et confusio magna
30 mulier, si primatum habeat super virum suum.
31 Cor humile et facies tristis
et plaga cordis mulier nequam.
32 Manus debiles et genua dissoluta
mulier, quae non beatificat virum suum.
33 A muliere initium factum est peccati,
et per illam omnes morimur.
34 Non des aquae tuae exitum, nec modicum,
nec mulieri nequam veniam prodeundi.
35 Si non ambulaverit ad manum tuam,
confundet te in conspectu inimicorum;
36 a carnibus tuis abscinde illam
et dimitte illam de domo tua.
