1 Gesù adunque sei dì avanti alla Pasqua andò a Betania, dove era Lazzaro già morto, e risuscitato da Gesù.	1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom he had raised fromthe dead.
2 E ivi gli diedero una cena: e Marta serviva a tavola: Lazzaro poi era uno di quelli, che stavano a mensa con lui.	2 They gave a dinner for him there; Martha waited on them and Lazarus was among those at table.
3 Maria però, presa una libbra di unguento di nardo liquido di gran pregio, unse i piedi di Gesù, e asciugò i piedi di lui colle sue trecce: e la casa fu ripiena dell'odor dell'unguento.	3 Mary brought in a pound of very costly ointment, pure nard, and with it anointed the feet of Jesus,wiping them with her hair; the house was fil ed with the scent of the ointment.
4 Disse perciò uno de' suoi discepoli, Giuda Iscariote, il quale era per tradirlo:	4 Then Judas Iscariot -- one of his disciples, the man who was to betray him-said,
5 E perché un unguento come questo non si è venduto trecento danari, e dato ai poveri?	5 'Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denari and the money given to the poor?'
6 Ciò egli disse, non perché si prendesse pensiero de' poveri, ma perché era ladro, e tenendo la borsa, portava quello, che vi era messo dentro.	6 He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he was in charge of thecommon fund and used to help himself to the contents.
7 Disse adunque Gesù: Lasciatela fare, che riserbi questo pel dì della mia Sepoltura.	7 So Jesus said, 'Leave her alone; let her keep it for the day of my burial.
8 Imperoccchè i poveri gli avete sempre con voi: me poi non sempre mi avete.	8 You have the poor with you always, you wil not always have me.'
9 Seppe pertanto una gran torba di Giudei, come Gesù era in quel luogo: e vi andarono non per Gesù solamente, ma anche per veder Lazzaro risuscitato da lui.	9 Meanwhile a large number of Jews heard that he was there and came not only on account of Jesusbut also to see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead.
10 Tenner consiglio perciò i Principi de' sacerdoti di dar morte anche a Lazzaro:	10 Then the chief priests decided to kill Lazarus as well,
11 Perché molti per causa di esso si separavano da' Giudei, e credevano in Gesù.	11 since it was on his account that many of the Jews were leaving them and believing in Jesus.
12 Il di seguente una gran turba di gente concorsa alla festa avendo udito, che Gesù andava a Gerusalemme,	12 The next day the great crowd of people who had come up for the festival heard that Jesus was on hisway to Jerusalem.
13 Preser de' rami di palme, e uscirongli incontro, e gridavano: Osanna, benedetto colui, che viene nel nome del Signore, il Re d'Israele.	13 They took branches of palm and went out to receive him, shouting: 'Hosanna! Blessed is he who iscoming in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel.'
14 E Gesù trovò un asinello, e vi montò sopra, conforme sta' scritto:	14 Jesus found a young donkey and mounted it -- as scripture says:
15 Non temere, figlia di Sion: ecco che il tuo Re viene sedente sopra un asinello.	15 Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion; look, your king is approaching, riding on the foal of a donkey.
16 Queste cose non le compresero da principio i suoi discepoli: ma glorificata che fu Gesù, allora si ricordarono, che tali cose erano state scritte di lui, e a lui erano state fatte.	16 At first his disciples did not understand this, but later, after Jesus had been glorified, theyremembered that this had been written about him and that this was what had happened to him.
17 La turba poi, che era con lui, attestava, com' egli chiamò Lazzaro dal sepolcro, e risuscitollo da morte.	17 The crowd who had been with him when he cal ed Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from thedead kept bearing witness to it;
18 E per questo gli andò incontro la turba: perché avevano adito, che avea fatto quel miracolo.	18 this was another reason why the crowd came out to receive him: they had heard that he had giventhis sign.
19 I Farisei pertanto disser tra di loro: Vedete voi, che non facciamo nulla? Ecco che il mondo tutto gli va dietro.	19 Then the Pharisees said to one another, 'You see, you are making no progress; look, the whole worldhas gone after him!'
20 Ed eranvi alcuni Gentili, di quelli, che erano andati ad adorare Dio nella festa.	20 Among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks.
21 Questi si accostarono a Filippo, che era di Betsaida della Galilea e lo pregavano, dicendo: Signore, desideriamo di vedere Gesù.	21 These approached Philip, who came from Bethsaida in Galilee, and put this request to him, 'Sir, weshould like to see Jesus.'
22 Filippo andò, e dircelo ad Andrea: e Andrea, e Filippo lo dissero a Gesù.	22 Philip went to tell Andrew, and Andrew and Philip together went to tel Jesus.
23 E Gesù rispose loro con dire: E venuto il tempo, che sia glorificato il Figliuolo dell'uomo.	23 Jesus replied to them: Now the hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified.
24 In verità, in verità ti dico: se il granello di frumento caduto in terra non muore,	24 In all truth I tell you, unless a wheat grain fal s into the earth and dies, it remains only a single grain;but if it dies it yields a rich harvest.
25 Resta infecondo: se poi muore, fruttifica abbondantemente. Chi ama l'anima sua, la ucciderà: e chi odia l'anima sua in questo mondo la salverà per la vita eterna.	25 Anyone who loves his life loses it; anyone who hates his life in this world wil keep it for eternal life.
26 Chi mi serve, mi segua: e dove son io, ivi sarà ancora colui, che mi serve. E chi servirà a me, sarà onorato dal Padre mio.	26 Whoever serves me, must fol ow me, and my servant wil be with me wherever I am. If anyone servesme, my Father wil honour him.
27 Adesso l'anima mia è conturbata. E che dirò io? Padre salvami da questo punto. Ma per questo sono io arrivato in questo punto.	27 Now my soul is troubled. What shal I say: Father, save me from this hour? But it is for this veryreason that I have come to this hour.
28 Padre glorifica il nome tuo. Venne allora dal cielo questa voce: e lo ho glorificato, e lo glorificherò di bel nuovo.	28 Father, glorify your name! A voice came from heaven, 'I have glorified it, and I wil again glorify it.'
29 Or la turba, che ivi si trovava, e udì diceva, che era stato un tuono. Altri dicevano: Un Angelo gli ha parlato.	29 The crowd standing by, who heard this, said it was a clap of thunder; others said, 'It was an angelspeaking to him.'
30 Ripigliò Gesù, e disse: Questa voce non è stata per me, ma per voi.	30 Jesus answered, 'It was not for my sake that this voice came, but for yours.
31 Adesso si fa giudizio di questo mondo: adesso il Principe di questo mondo sarà cacciato fuora.	31 'Now sentence is being passed on this world; now the prince of this world is to be driven out.
32 Ed io, quando sia levato da terra, trarrò tutto a me.	32 And when I am lifted up from the earth, I shal draw al people to myself.'
33 (E ciò egli diceva per significare di qual morte era per morire).	33 By these words he indicated the kind of death he would die.
34 Risposegli la turba: Noi abbiamo apparato dalla legge, che il Cristo vive eternamente: E come dici tu, che il Figliuol dell'uomo dee esser levato da terra? Chi è questo Figliuolo dell'uomo?	34 The crowd answered, 'The Law has taught us that the Christ wil remain for ever. So how can yousay, "The Son of man must be lifted up"? Who is this Son of man?'
35 Disse adunque loro Gesù: Per poco ancora o la luce con voi, camminate, mentre avete lume, affinchè non vi sorprendan le tenebre: e chi cammina nelle tenebre, non sa, dove si vada.	35 Jesus then said: The light wil be with you only a little longer now. Go on your way while you have thelight, or darkness wil overtake you, and nobody who walks in the dark knows where he is going.
36 Sino a tanto che avete la luce, credete nella luce, affinchè divenghiate figliuoli della luce. Così parlò Gesù: e se n'andò, e ad essi si nascose.	36 While you stil have the light, believe in the light so that you may become children of light. Having saidthis, Jesus left them and was hidden from their sight.
37 Ed avendo egli fatto sì grandi miracoli su' loro occhi, non credevano in lui:	37 Though they had been present when he gave so many signs, they did not believe in him;
38 Affinchè si adempisse il detto di Isaia profeta, quando disse: Signore, chi ha creduto quello, che ha udito da noi? Ed a chi è stata rivelata la potenza del Signore?	38 this was to fulfil the words of the prophet Isaiah: Lord, who has given credence to what they haveheard from us, and who has seen in it a revelation of the Lord's arm?
39 Per questo non potevano credere, il perché disse parimente Isaia:	39 Indeed, they were unable to believe because, as Isaiah says again:
40 Accecò i loro occhi, e indurò loro il cuore: affinchè con gli occhi non veggano, e col cuor non intendano, e si convertano, ed io gli risani.	40 He has blinded their eyes, he has hardened their heart, to prevent them from using their eyes to see,using their heart to understand, changing their ways and being healed by me.
41 Tali cose disse Isaia, allorché vide la gloria di lui, e di lui parlò.	41 Isaiah said this because he saw his glory, and his words referred to Jesus.
42 Nondimeno molti anche de' grandi credettero in lui: ma per paura de' Farisei noi confessavano per non essere scacciati dalla Sinagoga:	42 And yet there were many who did believe in him, even among the leading men, but they did not admitit, because of the Pharisees and for fear of being banned from the synagogue:
43 Imperocché amarono più la gloria degli uomini, che la gloria di Dio.	43 they put human glory before God's glory.
44 Ma Gesù alzò la voce, e disse: chi crede in me, crede non in me, ma in colui, che mi ha mandato.	44 Jesus declared publicly: Whoever believes in me believes not in me but in the one who sent me,
45 E chi vede me, vede colui, che mi ha mandato.	45 and whoever sees me, sees the one who sent me.
46 Io son venuto luce al mondo, affinchè chi crede in me, non resti tralle tenebre.	46 I have come into the world as light, to prevent anyone who believes in me from staying in the darkany more.
47 E chiunque avrà udite le mie parole, e non avrà creduto in me, io non lo giudico: imperocché non son venuto per giudicare il mondo, ma per salvare il mondo.	47 If anyone hears my words and does not keep them faithful y, it is not I who shal judge such a person,since I have come not to judge the world, but to save the world:
48 Chi rigetta me, e non riceve le mie parole, ha chi lo giudica: la parola annunziata da me, questa sarà suo giudice nel giorno estremo.	48 anyone who rejects me and refuses my words has his judge already: the word itself that I havespoken wil be his judge on the last day.
49 Conciossiacbé io non ho parlato di mie arbitrio, ma il Padre, che mi ha mandato, egli mi prescrisse quel, che ho da dire, e di che ho da parlare.	49 For I have not spoken of my own accord; but the Father who sent me commanded me what to sayand what to speak,
50 E so, che il suo comandamento è vita eterna. Le cose adunque, che io dico, ve le dico in quel modo, che le ha dette a me il Padre.	50 and I know that his commands mean eternal life. And therefore what the Father has told me is what Ispeak.
