1 Ogni amico dirà: Anch'io ho con tratta amicizia con lui: ma vi son degli amici solo di nome. Non v'ha egli in ciò un disgusto, che va fino alla morte?	1 Every friend declares his friendship, but there are friends who are friends in name only.
2 E un compagno, e un amico si cambiano in nemici.	2 Is it not a sorrow unto death when your bosom companion becomes your enemy?
3 O scelleratissima invenzione, donde se' uscita a ricoprire la terra di tal malvagità, e perfidia?	3 "Alas, my companion! Why were you created to blanket the earth with deceit?"
4 Un amico gode insieme coll'amico nell'allegria; ma in tempo di tribolazione farà contro a lui.	4 A false friend will share your joys, but in time of trouble he stands afar off.
5 Un amico si affligge coll'amico per amore del proprio ventre, e imbraccia lo scudo contro il nemico.	5 A true friend will fight with you against the foe, against your enemies he will be your shield-bearer.
6 Non esca dall'animo tuo la memoria del tuo amico, e non ti dimenticare di lui quando tu sii venuto in ricchezze.	6 Forget not your comrade during the battle, and neglect him not when you distribute your spoils.
7 Non prender consiglio da colui, che ti insidia, e nascondi i tuoi disegni a coloro, che ti portano invidia.	7 Every counselor points out a way, but some counsel ways of their own;
8 Ognuno, che è consultato, mette fuora il suo consiglio; ma v'ha chi da consiglio in pro suo.	8 Be on the alert when one proffers advice, find out first of all what he wants. For he may be thinking of himself alone; why should the profit fall to him?
9 Abbi cura di te stesso nel ricorrere al consigliere: e prima rifletti se abbia bisogno di qualche cosa; perocché anch'egli vi penserà dentro di se;	9 He may tell you how good your way will be, and then stand by to watch your misfortune.
10 Affinchè egli per disgrazia non ficchi in terra un bastone appuntato, e poi ti dica:	10 Seek no advice from one who regards you with hostility; from those who envy you, keep your intentions hidden.
11 La tua strada è sicura; ed egli se ne stia dirimpetto a vedere quel, che ti avvenga.	11 Speak not to a woman about her rival, nor to a coward about war, to a merchant about business, to a buyer about value, to a miser about generosity, to a cruel man about mercy, to a lazy man about work, to a seasonal laborer about the harvest, to an idle slave about a great task: pay no attention to any advice they give.
12 Va a discorrere di santità con un uomo senza religione, e di giustizia coll'iniquo, e con la donna va a discorrere di colei, che le da gelosia, di guerra col pauroso, di cose di traffico col negoziante, di vendite con uno, che vuoi comperare, di gratitudine coll'invidioso,	12 Instead, associate with a religious man, who you are sure keeps the commandments; Who is like-minded with yourself and will feel for you if you fall.
13 Di pietà coll'empio, di onestà col disonesto, col lavorator di campagna di qualunque lavoro,	13 Then, too, heed your own heart's counsel; for what have you that you can depend on more?
14 Col mercenario prezzolato per un anno di quello, che possa compirsi nell'anno; col servo pigro del molto lavorare: non prender mai consiglio da costoro su tali cose;	14 A man's conscience can tell him his situation better than seven watchmen in a lofty tower.
15 Ma frequenta l'uomo pio, chiunque sia quegli, cui tu conosca costante nel timore di Dio,	15 Most important of all, pray to God to set your feet in the path of truth.
16 L'anima del quale sia secondo l'anima tua, ed il quale se mai tu vacillassi tralle tenebre, abbia compassione di te.	16 A word is the source of every deed; a thought, of every act.
17 Formati dentro di te un cuore di buon consiglio; perocché altro non puoi averne più da stimarsi di questo.	17 The root of all conduct is the mind; four branches it shoots forth:
18 L'anima d'un uomo pio scopre talora la verità meglio, che sette sentinelle, che stanno alle vedette in luogo elevato.	18 Good and evil, death and life, their absolute mistress is the tongue.
19 Ma sopra tutto invoca l'Altissimo, affinchè addirizzi i tuoi passi secondo la verità.	19 A man may be wise and benefit many, yet be of no use to himself.
20 Avanti a ogni cosa ti preceda la parola di verità, e avanti ad ogni azione uno stabil consiglio.	20 Though a man may be wise, if his words are rejected he will be deprived of all enjoyment.
21 Una cattiva parola altera il cuore; or da esso nascono, queste quattro cose; il bene, e il male, la vita, e la morte; le quali cose sono costantemente in potere della lingua. Taluno è abile ad istruire molti, e non è buono a nulla per l'anima sua.	21 When a man is wise to his own advantage, the fruits of his knowledge are seen in his own person;
22 Un altro è prudente, e istruisce molti, e da consolazione all'anima propria.	22 When a man is wise to his people's advantage, the fruits of his knowledge are enduring:
23 Colui, che discorre da sofista, è odioso, egli resterà colle mani vuota del tutto:	23 Limited are the days of one man's life, but the life of Israel is days without number.
24 Il Signore non ha conceduto a luì di essere gradito, perché è privo d'ogni sapienza.	24 One wise for himself has full enjoyment, and all who see him praise him;
25 E sapiente colui, che è sapiente per l'anima propria, e i frutti dalla, prudenza di lui son degni di laude.	25 One wise for his people wins a heritage of glory, and his name endures forever.
26 L'uomo sapiente istruisce il suo popolo, e i frutti del suo sapere sono fedeli.	26 My son, while you are well, govern your appetite so that you allow it not what is bad for you;
27 L'uomo sapiente sarà ricolmo di benedizioni, e chiunque lo vede, gli darà lode.	27 For not every food is good for everyone, nor is everything suited to every taste.
28 La vita dell'uomo è un numero di giorni, ma i giorni d'Israele son senza numero.	28 Be not drawn after every enjoyment, neither become a glutton for choice foods,
29 L'uomo sapiente sarà in onore presso del popolo, e il nome di lui viverà eternamente.	29 For sickness comes with overeating, and gluttony brings on biliousness.
30 Figliuolo, nel tempo della tua vita tenta l'anima tua, e se ella è cattiva, non le dare potestà;	30 Through lack of self-control many have died, but the abstemious man prolongs his life.
31 Perocché non tutte le cose sono utili a tutti, e non ogni anima trova in ogni cosa la sua soddisfazione.
32 Guardati dall'essere avido in qualunque convito, e non iscagliarti sopra tutte le vivande;
33 Perocché il molto mangiare cagiona malattìe, e la golosità conduce fino alla colica.
34 Molti ne ha uccisi la crapula: ma l'uom temperante prolungherà la sua vita
