1 Ogni amico dirà: Anch'io ho con tratta amicizia con lui: ma vi son degli amici solo di nome. Non v'ha egli in ciò un disgusto, che va fino alla morte?	1 Every friend will say: I also am his friend: but there is a friend, that is only a friend in name. Is not this a grief even to death?
2 E un compagno, e un amico si cambiano in nemici.	2 But a companion and a friend shall be turned to an enemy.
3 O scelleratissima invenzione, donde se' uscita a ricoprire la terra di tal malvagità, e perfidia?	3 O wicked presumption, whence camest thou to cover the earth with thy malice, and deceitfulness?
4 Un amico gode insieme coll'amico nell'allegria; ma in tempo di tribolazione farà contro a lui.	4 There is a companion who rejoiceth with his friend in his joys, but in the time of trouble, he will be against him.
5 Un amico si affligge coll'amico per amore del proprio ventre, e imbraccia lo scudo contro il nemico.	5 There is a companion who condoleth with his friend for his belly's sake, and he will take up a shield against enemy.
6 Non esca dall'animo tuo la memoria del tuo amico, e non ti dimenticare di lui quando tu sii venuto in ricchezze.	6 Forget not thy friend in thy mind, and be not unmindful of him in thy riches.
7 Non prender consiglio da colui, che ti insidia, e nascondi i tuoi disegni a coloro, che ti portano invidia.	7 Consult not with him that layeth a snare for thee, and hide thy counsel from them that envy thee.
8 Ognuno, che è consultato, mette fuora il suo consiglio; ma v'ha chi da consiglio in pro suo.	8 Every counsellor giveth out counsel, but there is one that is a counsellor for himself.
9 Abbi cura di te stesso nel ricorrere al consigliere: e prima rifletti se abbia bisogno di qualche cosa; perocché anch'egli vi penserà dentro di se;	9 Beware of a counsellor. And know before what need he hath: for he will devise to his own mind:
10 Affinchè egli per disgrazia non ficchi in terra un bastone appuntato, e poi ti dica:	10 Lest he thrust a stake into the ground, and say to thee:
11 La tua strada è sicura; ed egli se ne stia dirimpetto a vedere quel, che ti avvenga.	11 Thy way is good; and then stand on the other side to see what shall befall thee.
12 Va a discorrere di santità con un uomo senza religione, e di giustizia coll'iniquo, e con la donna va a discorrere di colei, che le da gelosia, di guerra col pauroso, di cose di traffico col negoziante, di vendite con uno, che vuoi comperare, di gratitudine coll'invidioso,	12 Treat not with a man without religion concerning holiness, nor with an unjust man concerning justice, nor with a woman touching her of whom she is jealous, nor with a coward concerning war, nor with a merchant about traffic, nor with a buyer of selling, nor with an envious man of giving thanks,
13 Di pietà coll'empio, di onestà col disonesto, col lavorator di campagna di qualunque lavoro,	13 Nor with the ungodly of piety, nor with the dishonest of honesty, nor with the held labourer of every work
14 Col mercenario prezzolato per un anno di quello, che possa compirsi nell'anno; col servo pigro del molto lavorare: non prender mai consiglio da costoro su tali cose;	14 Nor with him that worketh by the year of the finishing of the year, nor with an idle servant of much business: give no heed to these in any matter of counsel.
15 Ma frequenta l'uomo pio, chiunque sia quegli, cui tu conosca costante nel timore di Dio,	15 But be continually with a holy man, whomsoever thou shalt know to observe the fear of God,
16 L'anima del quale sia secondo l'anima tua, ed il quale se mai tu vacillassi tralle tenebre, abbia compassione di te.	16 Whose soul is according to thy own soul: and who, when thou shalt stumble in the dark, will be sorry for thee.
17 Formati dentro di te un cuore di buon consiglio; perocché altro non puoi averne più da stimarsi di questo.	17 And establish within thyself a heart of good counsel: for there is no other thing of more worth to thee than it.
18 L'anima d'un uomo pio scopre talora la verità meglio, che sette sentinelle, che stanno alle vedette in luogo elevato.	18 The soul of a holy man discovereth sometimes true things, more than seven watchmen that sit in a high piece to watch.
19 Ma sopra tutto invoca l'Altissimo, affinchè addirizzi i tuoi passi secondo la verità.	19 But above all these things pray to the most High, that he may direct thy way in truth.
20 Avanti a ogni cosa ti preceda la parola di verità, e avanti ad ogni azione uno stabil consiglio.	20 In all thy works let the true word go before thee, and steady counsel before every action.
21 Una cattiva parola altera il cuore; or da esso nascono, queste quattro cose; il bene, e il male, la vita, e la morte; le quali cose sono costantemente in potere della lingua. Taluno è abile ad istruire molti, e non è buono a nulla per l'anima sua.	21 A wicked word shall change the beast: out of which four manner of things arise, good and evil, life and death: and the tongue is continually the ruler of them. There is a man that is subtle and a teacher of many, and yet is unprofitable to his own soul.
22 Un altro è prudente, e istruisce molti, e da consolazione all'anima propria.	22 A skilful man hath taught many, and is sweet to his own soul.
23 Colui, che discorre da sofista, è odioso, egli resterà colle mani vuota del tutto:	23 He that speaketh sophistically, is hateful: he shall be destitute of every thing.
24 Il Signore non ha conceduto a luì di essere gradito, perché è privo d'ogni sapienza.	24 Grace is not given him from the Lord: for he is deprived of all wisdom.
25 E sapiente colui, che è sapiente per l'anima propria, e i frutti dalla, prudenza di lui son degni di laude.	25 There is a wise man that is wise to his own soul: and the fruit of his understanding is commendable.
26 L'uomo sapiente istruisce il suo popolo, e i frutti del suo sapere sono fedeli.	26 A wise man instructeth his own people, and the fruits of his understanding are faithful.
27 L'uomo sapiente sarà ricolmo di benedizioni, e chiunque lo vede, gli darà lode.	27 A wise man shall be filled with blessings, and they that see shall praise him.
28 La vita dell'uomo è un numero di giorni, ma i giorni d'Israele son senza numero.	28 The life of a man is in the number of his days: but the days of Israel are innumerable.
29 L'uomo sapiente sarà in onore presso del popolo, e il nome di lui viverà eternamente.	29 A wise man shall inherit honour among his people, and his name shall live for ever.
30 Figliuolo, nel tempo della tua vita tenta l'anima tua, e se ella è cattiva, non le dare potestà;	30 My son, prove thy soul in thy life: and if it be wicked, give it no power:
31 Perocché non tutte le cose sono utili a tutti, e non ogni anima trova in ogni cosa la sua soddisfazione.	31 For all things are not expedient for all, and every kind pleaseth not every soul.
32 Guardati dall'essere avido in qualunque convito, e non iscagliarti sopra tutte le vivande;	32 Be not greedy in any feasting, and pour not out thyself upon any meat:
33 Perocché il molto mangiare cagiona malattìe, e la golosità conduce fino alla colica.	33 For in many meats there will be sickness, and greediness will turn to choler.
34 Molti ne ha uccisi la crapula: ma l'uom temperante prolungherà la sua vita	34 By surfeiting many have perished: but he that is temperate, shall prolong life.
