1 Guardate di non fare le vostre opere buone alla presenza degli uomini per essere da loro veduti, altrimenti non ne sarete rimunerati dal Padre vostro che è nei cieli.	1 "Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
2 Quando adunque tu fai elemosina, non suonar la tromba davanti a te, come fanno gli ipocriti nelle sinagoghe e nelle strade, per essere onorati dagli uomini. In verità vi dico: han già ricevuto la loro mercede.	2 "Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
3 Ma quando fai elemosina, non sappia la tua sinistra quel che fa la tua destra,	3 But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
4 sicché la tua elemosina sia nascosta; e il Padre, che vede nel segreto, te ne darà la ricompensa.	4 so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
5 E quando pregate non fate come gli ipocriti, che amano star a pregare nelle sinagoghe e sugli angoli delle piazze, per essere veduti dagli uomini. In verità vi dico: han già la ricompensa loro.	5 "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
6 Ma tu, quando vuoi pregare, entra nella camera, e, chiuso l'uscio, prega il tuo Padre in segreto, e il Padre tuo, che vede nel segreto, te ne darà la ricompensa.	6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
7 E quando pregate, non vogliate usare tante parole, come i Gentili, che stimano di essere esauditi per il molto parlare.	7 "And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
8 Non l'imitate, poiché sa bene il Padre vostro, avanti che gliene chiediate, di quali cose avete bisogno.	8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 Voi dunque pregate così: Padre nostro che sei nei cieli, sia santificato il tuo nome;	9 Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 venga il tuo regno; sia fatta la tua volontà, come in cielo così in terra.	10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Dacci oggi il nostro pane quotidiano;	11 Give us this day our daily bread;
12 e rimettici i nostri debiti, come noi li rimettiamo ai nostri debitori;	12 And forgive us our debts, As we also have forgiven our debtors;
13 e non c'indurre in tentazione, ma liberaci dal male. Così sia.	13 And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.
14 Perchè se perdonerete agli uomini i loro falli, anche il vostro Padre celeste vi perdonerà i vostri peccati,	14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you;
15 ma se non perdonerete agli uomini, nemmeno il Padre vostro vi perdonerà le vostre mancanze.	15 but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
16 Quando poi digiunate, non prendete un'aria melanconica, come gl'ipocriti che sfigurano la loro faccia per mostrare alla gente che digiunano. In verità vi dico che han già ricevuto la loro mercede.	16 "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
17 Ma tu, quando digiuni, profumati il capo e lavati la faccia,	17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
18 affinché non alla gente apparisca che tu digiuni, ma al tuo Padre, che è nel segreto; e il Padre tuo, che vede nel segreto, te ne darà la ricompensa.	18 that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
19 Non vogliate accumulare tesori sulla terra, dove la ruggine e la tignola consumano e i ladri dissotterrano e rubano;	19 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal,
20 ma fatevi dei tesori nel cielo, dove nè ruggine, nè tignola consumano, dove i ladri nè scassinano, nè rubano.	20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal.
21 Perchè dove è il tuo tesoro quivi è anche il tuo cuore.	21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
22 Lume del tuo corpo è l'occhio. Se l'occhio tuo è puro, tutto il tuo corpo sarà illuminato, ma se l'occhio tuo è torbido, tutta la persona sarà nelle tenebre.	22 "The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light;
23 Se dunque la luce che è in te è buio, quanto grandi saranno le tenebre?	23 but if your eye is not sound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
24 Nessuno può servire a due padroni, sicuramente o odierà l'uno e amerà l'altro, o sarà affezionato al primo e disprezzerà il secondo. Non potete servire a Dio ed a mammona.	24 "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
25 Perciò vi dico: non siate troppo solleciti per la vita vostra, di quel che mangerete, nè per il vostro corpo, di che vi vestirete. La vita non vale più del cibo, e il corpo più del vestito?	25 "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
26 Guardate gli uccelli dell'aria: non seminano, non mietono, non raccolgono in granai, e il vostro Padre celeste li nutre. Or non valete voi più di loro?	26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
27 E chi di voi, con tutto il suo ingegno, può aggiungere alla sua statura un sol cubito?	27 And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life?
28 E perchè darsi tanta pena per il vestito? Guardate come crescono i gigli del campo: non faticano, nè filano;	28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin;
29 eppure vi assicuro che nemmeno Salomone, con tutta la sua gloria, fu mai vestito come uno di loro.	29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
30 Or se Dio riveste in questa maniera l'erba del campo, che oggi è e domani vien gettata nel forno, quanto più vestirà voi, gente di poca fede?	30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith?
31 E non vogliate angustiarvi dicendo: Che mangeremo, che berremo, di che ci rivestiremo?	31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'
32 Tutte queste cose preoccupano i Gentili; or il Padre vostro sa che avete bisogno di tutto questo.	32 For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.
33 Cercate prima di tutto il regno di Dio e la sua giustizia e tutte queste cose vi saran date per giunta.	33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.
34 Non vogliate adunque mettervi in pena pel domani; il domani penserà a se stesso: basta a ciascun giorno il suo affanno.	34 "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day.
