BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - Ma qual necessità [e qual vantaggio] ha l'uomo di ricercar al disopra di sè, mentre ignora quel ch'è bene per lui nella sua vita, durante i giorni del suo pellegrinaggio, nel tempo che trascorre come un'ombra? E chi potrà far sapere all'uomo, quel che avverrà dopo di lui sotto il sole?	1 Better a good name than costly oil, the day of death than the day of birth.
2 Meglio il buon nome che gli unguenti preziosi, e il dì della morte che quello della nascita.	2 Better go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting; for to this end everyone comes, let theliving take this to heart.
3 Meglio andare alla casa del lutto, che alla casa del festino: perchè colà è rammentata la fine d'ogni uomo, e il vivente pensa al futuro.	3 Better sadness than laughter: a joyful heart may be concealed behind sad looks.
4 Meglio la mestizia che il riso; perchè con la tristezza del volto si migliora il cuor del colpevole.	4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, the heart of fools in the house of gaiety.
5 Il cuore de' savi è dove sta il lutto, e il cuor degli stolti, dove l'allegria.	5 Better attend to the reprimand of the wise than listen to a song sung by a fool.
6 Meglio esser rimproverati dal saggio, che ingannati dall'adulazione degli stolti.	6 For like the crackling of thorns under the cauldron is the laughter of fools: and that too is futile.
7 Perchè come il crepitar de' pruni sotto il paiuolo, così è il riso degli stolti. E anche questo è vanità!	7 But being oppressed drives a sage mad, and a present corrupts the heart.
8 La calunnia conturba il saggioe abbatte la forza del suo cuore.	8 Better the end of a matter than its beginning, better patience than ambition.
9 Meglio la fine d'un discorso, che il principio: meglio il paziente che l'arrogante.	9 Do not be too easily exasperated, for exasperation dwel s in the heart of fools.
10 Non esser facile ad adirarti, perchè l'ira riposa in seno dello stolto.	10 Do not ask why the past was better than the present, for this is not a question prompted by wisdom.
11 Non dire: «Chi sa mai perchèi tempi di prima eran migliori di questi?»; giacchè stolta è una tale domanda.	11 Wisdom is as good as a legacy, profitable to those who enjoy the light of the sun.
12 Migliore è la sapienza unita agli averi, e giova maggiormente a chi vede il sole.	12 For as money protects, so does wisdom, and the advantage of knowledge is this: that wisdom bestowslife on those who possess her.
13 Come infatti protegge la sapienza, così protegge il danaro; ma la dottrina e la sapienza han questo in più, che dàn vita a chi le possiede.	13 Consider God's creation: who, for instance, can straighten what God has bent?
14 Considera le opere di Dio: come niuno possa raddrizzare ciò ch'Egli dispregiò [e torse].	14 When things are going wel , enjoy yourself, and when they are going badly, consider this: God hasdesigned the one no less than the other so that we should take nothing for granted.
15 Nel dì della prosperità goditi i beni, o premunisciti contro il giorno dell'avversità; perchè questo e quello ha fatto parimenti Iddio, onde non trovi l'uomo giusta querela contro di lui.	15 In my futile life, I have seen everything: the upright person perishing in uprightness and the wickedperson surviving in wickedness.
16 Anche questo vidi ne' giorni della mia vanità: c'è il giusto che perisce nella sua giustizia, e l'empio che a lungo vive [e prospera] nella sua malvagità.	16 Do not be upright to excess and do not make yourself unduly wise: why should you destroy yourself?
17 Tu non esser troppo giusto, e non ti fare eccessivamente savio, perchè tu non abbia a perdere il senno [affatto].	17 Do not be wicked to excess, and do not be a fool: why die before your time?
18 Non agire troppo empiamentenè essere stolto, perchè tu non muoia prima del tempo.	18 It is wise to hold on to one and not let go of the other, since the godfearing wil find both.
19 È bene che tu sostenga il giusto, ma neppure da quell'altro non ritirar la tua mano; giacchè chi teme Iddio, nulla trascura.	19 Wisdom makes the wise stronger than a dozen governors in a city.
20 La sapienza rende il saggio più fortedi dieci capi [che sian] nella città.	20 No one on earth is sufficiently upright to do good without ever sinning.
21 Certo non v'ha giusto sulla terra, che faccia il bene e non pecchi[mai].	21 Again, do not listen to all that people say, then you wil not hear your servant abusing you.
22 Non badare a tutto quello che si dice, che tu non abbia a udire il tuo servo sparlare di te!	22 For often, as you very wel know, you have abused others.
23 Sa invero la tua coscienza, che spesso tu pure hai sparlato degli altri.	23 Thanks to wisdom, I have found all this to be true; I resolved to be wise, but this was beyond myreach!
24 Tutto saggiai con la sapienza. Dissi: «Diventerò sapiente!»; ma quella s'allontanò da me,	24 The past is out of reach, buried deep -- who can discover it?
25 più assai che prima non era. È grande la [sua] profondità: chi può scovarla?	25 But I have reached the point where, having learnt, explored and investigated wisdom and reflection, Irecognise evil as being a form of madness, and fol y as something stupid.
26 Investigai ogni cosa con l'animo mio per sapere, e indagare e cercar la sapienza e la ragione [delle cose], e riconoscer l'empietà dello stoltoe l'errore de' folli.	26 And I find woman more bitter than Death, she is a snare, her heart is a net, and her arms are chains.The man who is pleasing to God eludes her, but the sinner is captured by her.
27 E più amara della morte trovai la donna, ch'è un laccio da cacciatori, e una rete è il suo cuore, e le sue mani catene. Chi è caro a Dio, ne scampa; ma il peccatore sarà accalappiato da lei.	27 This is what I think, says Qoheleth, having examined one thing after another to draw some conclusion,
28 Ecco quel ch'io trovai, - dice l'Ecclesiaste -[osservando le cose]ad una ad una per scoprir[ne] la ragione,	28 which I am still looking for, although unsuccessful y: one man in a thousand, I may find, but a womanbetter than other women-never.
29 che l'anima mia ricerca ancora, e io non ho trovato! Un uomo su mille lo trovai, ma una donna tra tutte non la trovai.	29 This alone is my conclusion: God has created man straightforward, and human artifices are humaninventions.
30 Questo solo trovai, che Dio fece l'uomo retto, ma egli si perde dietro a infinite questioni. Chi è come il savio? e chi conosce la spiegazione delle cose?
