1 - Ma qual necessità [e qual vantaggio] ha l'uomo di ricercar al disopra di sè, mentre ignora quel ch'è bene per lui nella sua vita, durante i giorni del suo pellegrinaggio, nel tempo che trascorre come un'ombra? E chi potrà far sapere all'uomo, quel che avverrà dopo di lui sotto il sole?	1 What needeth a man to seek things that are above him, whereas he knoweth not what is profitable for him in his life, in all the days of his pilgrimage, and the time that passeth like a shadow? Or who can tell him what shall be after him under the sun?
2 Meglio il buon nome che gli unguenti preziosi, e il dì della morte che quello della nascita.	2 A good name is better than precious ointments: and the day of death than the day of one's birth.
3 Meglio andare alla casa del lutto, che alla casa del festino: perchè colà è rammentata la fine d'ogni uomo, e il vivente pensa al futuro.	3 It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to the house of feasting: for in that we are put in mind of the end of all, and the living thinketh what is to come.
4 Meglio la mestizia che il riso; perchè con la tristezza del volto si migliora il cuor del colpevole.	4 Anger is better than laughter: because by the sadness of the countenance the mind of the offender is corrected.
5 Il cuore de' savi è dove sta il lutto, e il cuor degli stolti, dove l'allegria.	5 The heart of the wise is where there is mourning, and the heart of fools where there is mirth.
6 Meglio esser rimproverati dal saggio, che ingannati dall'adulazione degli stolti.	6 It is better to be rebuked by a wise man, than to be deceived by the flattery of fools.
7 Perchè come il crepitar de' pruni sotto il paiuolo, così è il riso degli stolti. E anche questo è vanità!	7 For as the crackling of thorns burning under a pot, so is the laughter of a fool: now this also is vanity.
8 La calunnia conturba il saggioe abbatte la forza del suo cuore.	8 Oppression troubleth the wise, and shall destroy the strength of his heart.
9 Meglio la fine d'un discorso, che il principio: meglio il paziente che l'arrogante.	9 Better is the end of a speech than the beginning. Better is the patient man than the presumptuous.
10 Non esser facile ad adirarti, perchè l'ira riposa in seno dello stolto.	10 Be not quickly angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of a fool.
11 Non dire: «Chi sa mai perchèi tempi di prima eran migliori di questi?»; giacchè stolta è una tale domanda.	11 Say not: What thinkest thou is the cause that former times were better than they are now? for this manner of question is foolish.
12 Migliore è la sapienza unita agli averi, e giova maggiormente a chi vede il sole.	12 Wisdom with riches is more profitable, and bringeth more advantage to them that see the sun.
13 Come infatti protegge la sapienza, così protegge il danaro; ma la dottrina e la sapienza han questo in più, che dàn vita a chi le possiede.	13 For as wisdom is a defence, so money is a defence : but learning and wisdom excel in this, that they give life to him that possesseth them.
14 Considera le opere di Dio: come niuno possa raddrizzare ciò ch'Egli dispregiò [e torse].	14 Consider the works of God, that no man can correct whom he hath despised.
15 Nel dì della prosperità goditi i beni, o premunisciti contro il giorno dell'avversità; perchè questo e quello ha fatto parimenti Iddio, onde non trovi l'uomo giusta querela contro di lui.	15 In the good day enjoy good things, and beware beforehand of the evil day: for God hath made both the one and the other, that man may not find against him any just complaint.
16 Anche questo vidi ne' giorni della mia vanità: c'è il giusto che perisce nella sua giustizia, e l'empio che a lungo vive [e prospera] nella sua malvagità.	16 These things also I saw in the days of my vanity: A just man perisheth in his justice, and a wicked man liveth a long time in his wickedness.
17 Tu non esser troppo giusto, e non ti fare eccessivamente savio, perchè tu non abbia a perdere il senno [affatto].	17 Be not over just: and be not more wise than is necessary, lest thou become stupid.
18 Non agire troppo empiamentenè essere stolto, perchè tu non muoia prima del tempo.	18 Be not overmuch wicked: and be not foolish, lest thou die before thy time.
19 È bene che tu sostenga il giusto, ma neppure da quell'altro non ritirar la tua mano; giacchè chi teme Iddio, nulla trascura.	19 It is good that thou shouldst hold up the just, yea and from him withdraw not thy hand: for he that feareth God, neglecteth nothing.
20 La sapienza rende il saggio più fortedi dieci capi [che sian] nella città.	20 Wisdom hath strengthened the wise more than ten princes of the city.
21 Certo non v'ha giusto sulla terra, che faccia il bene e non pecchi[mai].	21 For there is no just man upon earth, that doth good, and sinneth not.
22 Non badare a tutto quello che si dice, che tu non abbia a udire il tuo servo sparlare di te!	22 But do not apply thy heart to all words that are spoken: lest perhaps thou hear thy servant reviling thee.
23 Sa invero la tua coscienza, che spesso tu pure hai sparlato degli altri.	23 For thy conscience knoweth that thou also hast often spoken evil of others.
24 Tutto saggiai con la sapienza. Dissi: «Diventerò sapiente!»; ma quella s'allontanò da me,	24 I have tried all things in wisdom. I have said: I will be wise: and it departed farther from me,
25 più assai che prima non era. È grande la [sua] profondità: chi può scovarla?	25 Much more than it was: it is a great depth, who shall find it out?
26 Investigai ogni cosa con l'animo mio per sapere, e indagare e cercar la sapienza e la ragione [delle cose], e riconoscer l'empietà dello stoltoe l'errore de' folli.	26 I have surveyed all things with my mind, to know, and consider, and seek out wisdom and reason: and to know the wickedness of the fool, and the error of the imprudent:
27 E più amara della morte trovai la donna, ch'è un laccio da cacciatori, e una rete è il suo cuore, e le sue mani catene. Chi è caro a Dio, ne scampa; ma il peccatore sarà accalappiato da lei.	27 And I have found a woman more bitter than death, who is the hunter's snare, and her heart is a net, and her hands are bands. He that pleaseth God shall escape from her: but he that is a sinner, shall be caught by her.
28 Ecco quel ch'io trovai, - dice l'Ecclesiaste -[osservando le cose]ad una ad una per scoprir[ne] la ragione,	28 Lo this have I found, said Ecclesiastes, weighing one thing after another, that I might find out the account,
29 che l'anima mia ricerca ancora, e io non ho trovato! Un uomo su mille lo trovai, ma una donna tra tutte non la trovai.	29 Which yet my soul seeketh, and I have not found it. One man among a thousand I have found, a woman among them all I have not found.
30 Questo solo trovai, che Dio fece l'uomo retto, ma egli si perde dietro a infinite questioni. Chi è come il savio? e chi conosce la spiegazione delle cose?	30 Only this I have found, that God made man right, and he hath entangled himself with an infinity of questions. Who is as the wise man? and who hath known the resolution of the word?
