| 1 - Giacobbe pure partì per il cammino già intrapreso, ed ecco venirgli incontro degli angeli di Dio. | 1 Jacob went on his way and the angels of God met him; |
| 2 Quando li ebbe veduti, disse: «Questi sono gli accampamenti di Dio»; e chiamò quel luogo "Maanaim", cioè "Accampamenti". | 2 and when Jacob saw them he said, "This is God's army!" So he called the name of that place Mahanaim. |
| 3 Mandò poi innanzi a sè dei messi ad Esaù suo fratello nella terra di Seir, nella regione di Edom, | 3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother in the land of Seir, the country of Edom, |
| 4 e comandò loro dicendo: «Così parlerete al signore mio Esaù. Questo dice il tuo fratello Giacobbe. Andai come pellegrino a Labano, e vi son stato sino ad oggi. | 4 instructing them, "Thus you shall say to my lord Esau: Thus says your servant Jacob, 'I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now; |
| 5 Ho bovi, asini, pecore, servi e serve; mando ora un'ambasceria a te mio signore, per trovar grazia innanzi a te». | 5 and I have oxen, asses, flocks, menservants, and maidservants; and I have sent to tell my lord, in order that I may find favor in your sight.'" |
| 6 E tornarono i messi a Giacobbe dicendo: «Fummo da Esaù tuo fratello, ed ecco ti viene frettolosamente incontro con quattrocento uomini». | 6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, "We came to your brother Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men with him." |
| 7 Temè Giacobbe grandemente, e spaventato divise in due schiere la gente che aveva seco, i greggi, le pecore, i bovi ed i cammelli, | 7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two companies, |
| 8 dicendo: «Se Esaù verrà contro una schiera e l'assalirà, l'altra schiera resterà salva». | 8 thinking, "If Esau comes to the one company and destroys it, then the company which is left will escape." |
| 9 Poi pregò: «Dio del padre mio Abramo, Dio del padre mio Isacco, Signore che dicesti: - Ritorna nella tua terra e nel luogo dove nascesti, ed io ti beneficherò -; | 9 And Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O LORD who didst say to me, 'Return to your country and to your kindred, and I will do you good,' |
| 10 ecco, io sono troppo piccolo appetto di tutti i tuoi benefizi, e delle promesse che hai mantenute al tuo servo. Col solo mio bastone ho passato questo fiume Giordano, ed ora ritorno con due schiere. | 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the steadfast love and all the faithfulness which thou hast shown to thy servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan; and now I have become two companies. |
| 11 Liberami dalle mani del mio fratello Esaù, che non abbia a venire, ed uccidere madri e figli, ch'io molto lo temo. | 11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, lest he come and slay us all, the mothers with the children. |
| 12 Tu dicesti che m'avresti beneficato, ed avresti moltiplicato i miei discendenti come l'arena del mare, che non si può contare, tanto è numerosa». | 12 But thou didst say, 'I will do you good, and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.'" |
| 13 Ed avendo ivi dormito in quella notte, di ciò che possedeva mise da parte, come dono ad Esaù suo fratello, | 13 So he lodged there that night, and took from what he had with him a present for his brother Esau, |
| 14 duecento capre e venti capri, duecento pecore e venti montoni, | 14 two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, |
| 15 trenta cammelle fresche di parto co' loro nati, quaranta vacche e venti tori, venti asine e dieci asinelli. | 15 thirty milch camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty she-asses and ten he-asses. |
| 16 Mandò separatamente ciascun gruppo per mezzo dei suoi servi, e disse ai garzoni: «Andate avanti a me, e mantenete uno stacco fra un gruppo ed un altro». | 16 These he delivered into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, "Pass on before me, and put a space between drove and drove." |
| 17 E comandò al primo, dicendo: «Se t'incontrerai col mio fratello Esaù, e ti domanderà di chi sei, o dove vai, o di chi sono quelli animali che tu conduci, | 17 He instructed the foremost, "When Esau my brother meets you, and asks you, 'To whom do you belong? Where are you going? And whose are these before you?' |
| 18 risponderai: - Sono del tuo servo Giacobbe, che le manda in dono al mio Signore Esaù, e viene anch'egli dietro a noi -». | 18 then you shall say, 'They belong to your servant Jacob; they are a present sent to my lord Esau; and moreover he is behind us.'" |
| 19 Gli stessi ordini dette al secondo, al terzo, ed a tutti quelli che accompagnavano i greggi, dicendo: «Dite ad Esaù queste stesse parole, quando lo incontrerete. | 19 He likewise instructed the second and the third and all who followed the droves, "You shall say the same thing to Esau when you meet him, |
| 20 Ed aggiungete: - Il medesimo Giacobbe tuo servo ci vien dietro; giacchè egli ha detto: "Lo placherò coi doni che gli mando avanti, e poi lo vedrò, e forse mi diverrà benevolo" -». | 20 and you shall say, 'Moreover your servant Jacob is behind us.'" For he thought, "I may appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterwards I shall see his face; perhaps he will accept me." |
| 21 Partirono dunque i suoi doni avanti a lui; ed egli per quella notte rimase nel [luogo da lui chiamato] "Gli accampamenti". | 21 So the present passed on before him; and he himself lodged that night in the camp. |
| 22 Levatosi poi molto presto, prese le due mogli, le due ancelle, con gli undici figli, e passò il guado di Iaboc. | 22 The same night he arose and took his two wives, his two maids, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. |
| 23 E portato all'altra riva tutto quello che gli apparteneva, | 23 He took them and sent them across the stream, and likewise everything that he had. |
| 24 restò solo. Ed ecco, un uomo lottò con lui sino a giorno. | 24 And Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. |
| 25 Il quale, vedendo di non poterlo vincere, lo toccò nel nervo d'una coscia, e subito vi restò senza forza. | 25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and Jacob's thigh was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. |
| 26 Poi gli disse: «Lasciami andare, che è già l'aurora». Rispose Giacobbe: «Non ti lascerò andare, se non mi benedirai». | 26 Then he said, "Let me go, for the day is breaking." But Jacob said, "I will not let you go, unless you bless me." |
| 27 Disse allora quell'uomo: «Qual è il tuo nome?». Rispose: «Giacobbe». | 27 And he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob." |
| 28 Ma quegli: «Il tuo nome non sarà più Giacobbe, ma Israele; chè se fosti forte lottando con Dio, quanto più avrai vittoria lottando con gli uomini?». | 28 Then he said, "Your name shall no more be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed." |
| 29 Giacobbe allora lo interrogò: «Dimmi, come ti chiami?». Ma quegli rispose: «Perchè mi domandi il mio nome?». E in quello stesso luogo lo benedisse. | 29 Then Jacob asked him, "Tell me, I pray, your name." But he said, "Why is it that you ask my name?" And there he blessed him. |
| 30 Giacobbe a quel luogo mise nome "Fanuel", dicendo: «Ho visto Dio a faccia a faccia, eppure sono rimasto vivo». | 30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, "For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved." |
| 31 Subito gli si levò il sole, appena uscito da Fanuel; e andava zoppicando. | 31 The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his thigh. |
| 32 Ed ora, insino ad oggi, i figli d'Israele non mangiano [negli animali] il nervo che si seccò nella coscia di Giacobbe, in memoria che [quell'uomo] gli toccò il nervo della coscia, e vi restò impedito. | 32 Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the sinew of the hip which is upon the hollow of the thigh, because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh on the sinew of the hip. |
