BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - Giacobbe pure partì per il cammino già intrapreso, ed ecco venirgli incontro degli angeli di Dio.	1 Early next morning, Laban kissed his grandchildren and daughters and blessed them. Then Laban leftto return home.
2 Quando li ebbe veduti, disse: «Questi sono gli accampamenti di Dio»; e chiamò quel luogo "Maanaim", cioè "Accampamenti".	2 While Jacob was going on his way, angels of God encountered him,
3 Mandò poi innanzi a sè dei messi ad Esaù suo fratello nella terra di Seir, nella regione di Edom,	3 and on seeing them he said, 'This is God's camp,' and he named the place Mahanaim.
4 e comandò loro dicendo: «Così parlerete al signore mio Esaù. Questo dice il tuo fratello Giacobbe. Andai come pellegrino a Labano, e vi son stato sino ad oggi.	4 Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in Seir, the open country of Edom,
5 Ho bovi, asini, pecore, servi e serve; mando ora un'ambasceria a te mio signore, per trovar grazia innanzi a te».	5 with these instructions, 'Say this to my lord Esau, "Here is the message of your servant Jacob: I havebeen staying with Laban and have been delayed there until now,
6 E tornarono i messi a Giacobbe dicendo: «Fummo da Esaù tuo fratello, ed ecco ti viene frettolosamente incontro con quattrocento uomini».	6 and I own oxen, beasts of burden and flocks, and men and women slaves. I send news of this to mylord in the hope of winning your favour." '
7 Temè Giacobbe grandemente, e spaventato divise in due schiere la gente che aveva seco, i greggi, le pecore, i bovi ed i cammelli,	7 The messengers returned to Jacob and told him, 'We went to your brother Esau, and he is already onhis way to meet you; there are four hundred men with him.'
8 dicendo: «Se Esaù verrà contro una schiera e l'assalirà, l'altra schiera resterà salva».	8 Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed. He divided the people with him, and the flocks and cattle,into two camps,
9 Poi pregò: «Dio del padre mio Abramo, Dio del padre mio Isacco, Signore che dicesti: - Ritorna nella tua terra e nel luogo dove nascesti, ed io ti beneficherò -;	9 thinking, 'If Esau comes to one of the camps and attacks it, the remaining camp may be able toescape.'
10 ecco, io sono troppo piccolo appetto di tutti i tuoi benefizi, e delle promesse che hai mantenute al tuo servo. Col solo mio bastone ho passato questo fiume Giordano, ed ora ritorno con due schiere.	10 Jacob said, 'God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh who told me, "Go backto your native land and I will be good to you,"
11 Liberami dalle mani del mio fratello Esaù, che non abbia a venire, ed uccidere madri e figli, ch'io molto lo temo.	11 I am unworthy of al the faithful love and constancy you have shown your servant. I had only my staffwhen I crossed this Jordan, and now I have grown into two camps.
12 Tu dicesti che m'avresti beneficato, ed avresti moltiplicato i miei discendenti come l'arena del mare, che non si può contare, tanto è numerosa».	12 I implore you, save me from my brother Esau's clutches, for I am afraid that he may come and attackme, mothers and children alike.
13 Ed avendo ivi dormito in quella notte, di ciò che possedeva mise da parte, come dono ad Esaù suo fratello,	13 Yet it was you who said, "I shal be very good to you, and make your descendants like the sand ofthe sea, which is too numerous to count." '
14 duecento capre e venti capri, duecento pecore e venti montoni,	14 Then Jacob passed that night there. From what he had with him he chose a gift for his brother Esau:
15 trenta cammelle fresche di parto co' loro nati, quaranta vacche e venti tori, venti asine e dieci asinelli.	15 two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,
16 Mandò separatamente ciascun gruppo per mezzo dei suoi servi, e disse ai garzoni: «Andate avanti a me, e mantenete uno stacco fra un gruppo ed un altro».	16 thirty camels in milk with their calves, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male.
17 E comandò al primo, dicendo: «Se t'incontrerai col mio fratello Esaù, e ti domanderà di chi sei, o dove vai, o di chi sono quelli animali che tu conduci,	17 He put them in the charge of his servants, in separate droves, and told his servants, 'Go ahead ofme, leaving a space between each drove and the next.'
18 risponderai: - Sono del tuo servo Giacobbe, che le manda in dono al mio Signore Esaù, e viene anch'egli dietro a noi -».	18 He gave the leading man this order: 'When my brother Esau meets you and asks, "Whose man areyou? Where are you going? Whose are those animals that you are driving?"
19 Gli stessi ordini dette al secondo, al terzo, ed a tutti quelli che accompagnavano i greggi, dicendo: «Dite ad Esaù queste stesse parole, quando lo incontrerete.	19 you wil answer, "Your servant Jacob's. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau. And Jacob himself isjust behind us." '
20 Ed aggiungete: - Il medesimo Giacobbe tuo servo ci vien dietro; giacchè egli ha detto: "Lo placherò coi doni che gli mando avanti, e poi lo vedrò, e forse mi diverrà benevolo" -».	20 He gave the same order to the second and the third, and to al who were fol owing the droves. 'Thatis what you must say to Esau when you find him.
21 Partirono dunque i suoi doni avanti a lui; ed egli per quella notte rimase nel [luogo da lui chiamato] "Gli accampamenti".	21 And you must add, "Your servant Jacob himself is just behind us." ' For he thought, 'If I conciliate him by sending a gift in advance, perhaps he will be well inclined towards me when I face him.'
22 Levatosi poi molto presto, prese le due mogli, le due ancelle, con gli undici figli, e passò il guado di Iaboc.	22 The gift went ahead of him, but he himself spent that night in the camp.
23 E portato all'altra riva tutto quello che gli apparteneva,	23 That same night he got up and, taking his two wives, his two slave-girls and his eleven children,crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
24 restò solo. Ed ecco, un uomo lottò con lui sino a giorno.	24 After he had taken them across the stream, he sent al his possessions over too.
25 Il quale, vedendo di non poterlo vincere, lo toccò nel nervo d'una coscia, e subito vi restò senza forza.	25 And Jacob was left alone. Then someone wrestled with him until daybreak
26 Poi gli disse: «Lasciami andare, che è già l'aurora». Rispose Giacobbe: «Non ti lascerò andare, se non mi benedirai».	26 who, seeing that he could not master him, struck him on the hip socket, and Jacob's hip wasdislocated as he wrestled with him.
27 Disse allora quell'uomo: «Qual è il tuo nome?». Rispose: «Giacobbe».	27 He said, 'Let me go, for day is breaking.' Jacob replied, 'I wil not let you go unless you bless me.'
28 Ma quegli: «Il tuo nome non sarà più Giacobbe, ma Israele; chè se fosti forte lottando con Dio, quanto più avrai vittoria lottando con gli uomini?».	28 The other said, 'What is your name?' 'Jacob,' he replied.
29 Giacobbe allora lo interrogò: «Dimmi, come ti chiami?». Ma quegli rispose: «Perchè mi domandi il mio nome?». E in quello stesso luogo lo benedisse.	29 He said, 'No longer are you to be cal ed Jacob, but Israel since you have shown your strengthagainst God and men and have prevailed.'
30 Giacobbe a quel luogo mise nome "Fanuel", dicendo: «Ho visto Dio a faccia a faccia, eppure sono rimasto vivo».	30 Then Jacob asked, 'Please tel me your name.' He replied, 'Why do you ask my name?' With that, heblessed him there.
31 Subito gli si levò il sole, appena uscito da Fanuel; e andava zoppicando.	31 Jacob named the place Peniel, 'Because I have seen God face to face,' he said, 'and have survived.'
32 Ed ora, insino ad oggi, i figli d'Israele non mangiano [negli animali] il nervo che si seccò nella coscia di Giacobbe, in memoria che [quell'uomo] gli toccò il nervo della coscia, e vi restò impedito.	32 The sun rose as he passed Peniel, limping from his hip.
	33 That is why to this day the Israelites do not eat the thigh sinew which is at the hip socket: because hehad struck Jacob at the hip socket on the thigh sinew.
