1 Poiché molti hanno cercato di raccontare con ordine gli avvenimenti che si sono compiuti in mezzo a noi,	1 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
2 come ce li hanno trasmessi coloro che ne furono testimoni oculari fin da principio e divennero ministri della Parola,	2 Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;
3 così anch’io ho deciso di fare ricerche accurate su ogni circostanza, fin dagli inizi, e di scriverne un resoconto ordinato per te, illustre Teòfilo,	3 It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
4 in modo che tu possa renderti conto della solidità degli insegnamenti che hai ricevuto.	4 That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
5 Al tempo di Erode, re della Giudea, vi era un sacerdote di nome Zaccaria, della classe di Abia, che aveva in moglie una discendente di Aronne, di nome Elisabetta.	5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
6 Ambedue erano giusti davanti a Dio e osservavano irreprensibili tutte le leggi e le prescrizioni del Signore.	6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
7 Essi non avevano figli, perché Elisabetta era sterile e tutti e due erano avanti negli anni.	7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.
8 Avvenne che, mentre Zaccaria svolgeva le sue funzioni sacerdotali davanti al Signore durante il turno della sua classe,	8 And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,
9 gli toccò in sorte, secondo l’usanza del servizio sacerdotale, di entrare nel tempio del Signore per fare l’offerta dell’incenso.	9 According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.
10 Fuori, tutta l’assemblea del popolo stava pregando nell’ora dell’incenso.	10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.
11 Apparve a lui un angelo del Signore, ritto alla destra dell’altare dell’incenso.	11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
12 Quando lo vide, Zaccaria si turbò e fu preso da timore.	12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
13 Ma l’angelo gli disse: «Non temere, Zaccaria, la tua preghiera è stata esaudita e tua moglie Elisabetta ti darà un figlio, e tu lo chiamerai Giovanni.	13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
14 Avrai gioia ed esultanza, e molti si rallegreranno della sua nascita,	14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
15 perché egli sarà grande davanti al Signore; non berrà vino né bevande inebrianti, sarà colmato di Spirito Santo fin dal seno di sua madre	15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
16 e ricondurrà molti figli d’Israele al Signore loro Dio.	16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
17 Egli camminerà innanzi a lui con lo spirito e la potenza di Elia, per ricondurre i cuori dei padri verso i figli e i ribelli alla saggezza dei giusti e preparare al Signore un popolo ben disposto».	17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
18 Zaccaria disse all’angelo: «Come potrò mai conoscere questo? Io sono vecchio e mia moglie è avanti negli anni».	18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
19 L’angelo gli rispose: «Io sono Gabriele, che sto dinanzi a Dio e sono stato mandato a parlarti e a portarti questo lieto annuncio.	19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
20 Ed ecco, tu sarai muto e non potrai parlare fino al giorno in cui queste cose avverranno, perché non hai creduto alle mie parole, che si compiranno a loro tempo».	20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
21 Intanto il popolo stava in attesa di Zaccaria e si meravigliava per il suo indugiare nel tempio.	21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
22 Quando poi uscì e non poteva parlare loro, capirono che nel tempio aveva avuto una visione. Faceva loro dei cenni e restava muto.	22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
23 Compiuti i giorni del suo servizio, tornò a casa.	23 And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
24 Dopo quei giorni Elisabetta, sua moglie, concepì e si tenne nascosta per cinque mesi e diceva:	24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
25 «Ecco che cosa ha fatto per me il Signore, nei giorni in cui si è degnato di togliere la mia vergogna fra gli uomini».	25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
26 Al sesto mese, l’angelo Gabriele fu mandato da Dio in una città della Galilea, chiamata Nàzaret,	26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27 a una vergine, promessa sposa di un uomo della casa di Davide, di nome Giuseppe. La vergine si chiamava Maria.	27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28 Entrando da lei, disse: «Rallégrati, piena di grazia: il Signore è con te».	28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
29 A queste parole ella fu molto turbata e si domandava che senso avesse un saluto come questo.	29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30 L’angelo le disse: «Non temere, Maria, perché hai trovato grazia presso Dio.	30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31 Ed ecco, concepirai un figlio, lo darai alla luce e lo chiamerai Gesù.	31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
32 Sarà grande e verrà chiamato Figlio dell’Altissimo; il Signore Dio gli darà il trono di Davide suo padre	32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33 e regnerà per sempre sulla casa di Giacobbe e il suo regno non avrà fine».	33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
34 Allora Maria disse all’angelo: «Come avverrà questo, poiché non conosco uomo?».	34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
35 Le rispose l’angelo: «Lo Spirito Santo scenderà su di te e la potenza dell’Altissimo ti coprirà con la sua ombra. Perciò colui che nascerà sarà santo e sarà chiamato Figlio di Dio.	35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
36 Ed ecco, Elisabetta, tua parente, nella sua vecchiaia ha concepito anch’essa un figlio e questo è il sesto mese per lei, che era detta sterile:	36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
37 nulla è impossibile a Dio».	37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.
38 Allora Maria disse: «Ecco la serva del Signore: avvenga per me secondo la tua parola». E l’angelo si allontanò da lei.	38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
39 In quei giorni Maria si alzò e andò in fretta verso la regione montuosa, in una città di Giuda.	39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
40 Entrata nella casa di Zaccaria, salutò Elisabetta.	40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
41 Appena Elisabetta ebbe udito il saluto di Maria, il bambino sussultò nel suo grembo. Elisabetta fu colmata di Spirito Santo	41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
42 ed esclamò a gran voce: «Benedetta tu fra le donne e benedetto il frutto del tuo grembo!	42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
43 A che cosa devo che la madre del mio Signore venga da me?	43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 Ecco, appena il tuo saluto è giunto ai miei orecchi, il bambino ha sussultato di gioia nel mio grembo.	44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
45 E beata colei che ha creduto nell’adempimento di ciò che il Signore le ha detto».	45 And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
46 Allora Maria disse: «L’anima mia magnifica il Signore	46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47 e il mio spirito esulta in Dio, mio salvatore,	47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48 perché ha guardato l’umiltà della sua serva. D’ora in poi tutte le generazioni mi chiameranno beata.	48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49 Grandi cose ha fatto per me l’Onnipotente e Santo è il suo nome;	49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
50 di generazione in generazione la sua misericordia per quelli che lo temono.	50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
51 Ha spiegato la potenza del suo braccio, ha disperso i superbi nei pensieri del loro cuore;	51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52 ha rovesciato i potenti dai troni, ha innalzato gli umili;	52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
53 ha ricolmato di beni gli affamati, ha rimandato i ricchi a mani vuote.	53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
54 Ha soccorso Israele, suo servo, ricordandosi della sua misericordia,	54 He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
55 come aveva detto ai nostri padri, per Abramo e la sua discendenza, per sempre».	55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.
56 Maria rimase con lei circa tre mesi, poi tornò a casa sua.	56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
57 Per Elisabetta intanto si compì il tempo del parto e diede alla luce un figlio.	57 Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
58 I vicini e i parenti udirono che il Signore aveva manifestato in lei la sua grande misericordia, e si rallegravano con lei.	58 And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.
59 Otto giorni dopo vennero per circoncidere il bambino e volevano chiamarlo con il nome di suo padre, Zaccaria.	59 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
60 Ma sua madre intervenne: «No, si chiamerà Giovanni».	60 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
61 Le dissero: «Non c’è nessuno della tua parentela che si chiami con questo nome».	61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
62 Allora domandavano con cenni a suo padre come voleva che si chiamasse.	62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
63 Egli chiese una tavoletta e scrisse: «Giovanni è il suo nome». Tutti furono meravigliati.	63 And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
64 All’istante gli si aprì la bocca e gli si sciolse la lingua, e parlava benedicendo Dio.	64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.
65 Tutti i loro vicini furono presi da timore, e per tutta la regione montuosa della Giudea si discorreva di tutte queste cose.	65 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.
66 Tutti coloro che le udivano, le custodivano in cuor loro, dicendo: «Che sarà mai questo bambino?». E davvero la mano del Signore era con lui.	66 And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
67 Zaccaria, suo padre, fu colmato di Spirito Santo e profetò dicendo:	67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
68 «Benedetto il Signore, Dio d’Israele, perché ha visitato e redento il suo popolo,	68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
69 e ha suscitato per noi un Salvatore potente nella casa di Davide, suo servo,	69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
70 come aveva detto per bocca dei suoi santi profeti d’un tempo:	70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
71 salvezza dai nostri nemici, e dalle mani di quanti ci odiano.	71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
72 Così egli ha concesso misericordia ai nostri padri e si è ricordato della sua santa alleanza,	72 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
73 del giuramento fatto ad Abramo, nostro padre, di concederci,	73 The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
74 liberati dalle mani dei nemici, di servirlo senza timore,	74 That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
75 in santità e giustizia al suo cospetto, per tutti i nostri giorni.	75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
76 E tu, bambino, sarai chiamato profeta dell’Altissimo perché andrai innanzi al Signore a preparargli le strade,	76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
77 per dare al suo popolo la conoscenza della salvezza nella remissione dei suoi peccati.	77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
78 Grazie alla tenerezza e misericordia del nostro Dio, ci visiterà un sole che sorge dall’alto,	78 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
79 per risplendere su quelli che stanno nelle tenebre e nell’ombra di morte, e dirigere i nostri passi sulla via della pace».	79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
80 Il bambino cresceva e si fortificava nello spirito. Visse in regioni deserte fino al giorno della sua manifestazione a Israele.	80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
