1 Un buon nome è preferibile all’unguento profumato e il giorno della morte al giorno della nascita.	1 Better a good name than costly oil, the day of death than the day of birth.
2 È meglio visitare una casa dove c’è lutto che visitare una casa dove si banchetta, perché quella è la fine d’ogni uomo e chi vive ci deve riflettere.	2 Better go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting; for to this end everyone comes, let theliving take this to heart.
3 È preferibile la mestizia al riso, perché con un volto triste il cuore diventa migliore.	3 Better sadness than laughter: a joyful heart may be concealed behind sad looks.
4 Il cuore dei saggi è in una casa in lutto e il cuore degli stolti in una casa in festa.	4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, the heart of fools in the house of gaiety.
5 Meglio ascoltare il rimprovero di un saggio che ascoltare la lode degli stolti:	5 Better attend to the reprimand of the wise than listen to a song sung by a fool.
6 perché quale il crepitìo dei pruni sotto la pentola tale è il riso degli stolti. Ma anche questo è vanità.	6 For like the crackling of thorns under the cauldron is the laughter of fools: and that too is futile.
7 L’estorsione rende stolto il saggio e i regali corrompono il cuore.	7 But being oppressed drives a sage mad, and a present corrupts the heart.
8 Meglio la fine di una cosa che il suo principio; è meglio un uomo paziente che uno presuntuoso.	8 Better the end of a matter than its beginning, better patience than ambition.
9 Non essere facile a irritarti in cuor tuo, perché la collera dimora in seno agli stolti.	9 Do not be too easily exasperated, for exasperation dwel s in the heart of fools.
10 Non dire: «Come mai i tempi antichi erano migliori del presente?», perché una domanda simile non è ispirata a saggezza.	10 Do not ask why the past was better than the present, for this is not a question prompted by wisdom.
11 Buona cosa è la saggezza unita a un patrimonio ed è utile per coloro che vedono il sole.	11 Wisdom is as good as a legacy, profitable to those who enjoy the light of the sun.
12 Perché si sta all’ombra della saggezza come si sta all’ombra del denaro; ma vale di più il sapere, perché la saggezza fa vivere chi la possiede.	12 For as money protects, so does wisdom, and the advantage of knowledge is this: that wisdom bestowslife on those who possess her.
13 Osserva l’opera di Dio: chi può raddrizzare ciò che egli ha fatto curvo?	13 Consider God's creation: who, for instance, can straighten what God has bent?
14 Nel giorno lieto sta’ allegro e nel giorno triste rifletti: Dio ha fatto tanto l’uno quanto l’altro, cosicché l’uomo non riesce a scoprire ciò che verrà dopo di lui.	14 When things are going wel , enjoy yourself, and when they are going badly, consider this: God hasdesigned the one no less than the other so that we should take nothing for granted.
15 Nei miei giorni vani ho visto di tutto: un giusto che va in rovina nonostante la sua giustizia, un malvagio che vive a lungo nonostante la sua iniquità.	15 In my futile life, I have seen everything: the upright person perishing in uprightness and the wickedperson surviving in wickedness.
16 Non essere troppo giusto e non mostrarti saggio oltre misura: perché vuoi rovinarti?	16 Do not be upright to excess and do not make yourself unduly wise: why should you destroy yourself?
17 Non essere troppo malvagio e non essere stolto. Perché vuoi morire prima del tempo?	17 Do not be wicked to excess, and do not be a fool: why die before your time?
18 È bene che tu prenda una cosa senza lasciare l’altra: in verità chi teme Dio riesce bene in tutto.	18 It is wise to hold on to one and not let go of the other, since the godfearing wil find both.
19 La sapienza rende il saggio più forte di dieci potenti che sono nella città.	19 Wisdom makes the wise stronger than a dozen governors in a city.
20 Non c’è infatti sulla terra un uomo così giusto che faccia solo il bene e non sbagli mai.	20 No one on earth is sufficiently upright to do good without ever sinning.
21 Ancora: non fare attenzione a tutte le dicerie che si fanno, così non sentirai che il tuo servo ha detto male di te;	21 Again, do not listen to all that people say, then you wil not hear your servant abusing you.
22 infatti il tuo cuore sa che anche tu tante volte hai detto male degli altri.	22 For often, as you very wel know, you have abused others.
23 Tutto questo io ho esaminato con sapienza e ho detto: «Voglio diventare saggio!», ma la sapienza resta lontana da me!	23 Thanks to wisdom, I have found all this to be true; I resolved to be wise, but this was beyond myreach!
24 Rimane lontano ciò che accade: profondo, profondo! Chi può comprenderlo?	24 The past is out of reach, buried deep -- who can discover it?
25 Mi sono applicato a conoscere e indagare e cercare la sapienza e giungere a una conclusione, e a riconoscere che la malvagità è stoltezza e la stoltezza è follia.	25 But I have reached the point where, having learnt, explored and investigated wisdom and reflection, Irecognise evil as being a form of madness, and fol y as something stupid.
26 Trovo che amara più della morte è la donna: essa è tutta lacci, una rete il suo cuore, catene le sue braccia. Chi è gradito a Dio la sfugge, ma chi fallisce ne resta preso.	26 And I find woman more bitter than Death, she is a snare, her heart is a net, and her arms are chains.The man who is pleasing to God eludes her, but the sinner is captured by her.
27 Vedi, questo ho scoperto, dice Qoèlet, confrontando a una a una le cose, per arrivare a una conclusione certa.	27 This is what I think, says Qoheleth, having examined one thing after another to draw some conclusion,
28 Quello che io ancora sto cercando e non ho trovato è questo: un uomo fra mille l’ho trovato, ma una donna fra tutte non l’ho trovata.	28 which I am still looking for, although unsuccessful y: one man in a thousand, I may find, but a womanbetter than other women-never.
29 Vedi, solo questo ho trovato: Dio ha creato gli esseri umani retti, ma essi vanno in cerca di infinite complicazioni.	29 This alone is my conclusion: God has created man straightforward, and human artifices are humaninventions.
