BIBBIA CEI 2008	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Dopo tali fatti, fu rivolta ad Abram, in visione, questa parola del Signore: «Non temere, Abram. Io sono il tuo scudo; la tua ricompensa sarà molto grande».	1 Some time later, the word of Yahweh came to Abram in a vision: Do not be afraid, Abram! I am yourshield and shal give you a very great reward.
2 Rispose Abram: «Signore Dio, che cosa mi darai? Io me ne vado senza figli e l’erede della mia casa è Elièzer di Damasco».	2 'Lord Yahweh,' Abram replied, 'what use are your gifts, as I am going on my way childless? . . .
3 Soggiunse Abram: «Ecco, a me non hai dato discendenza e un mio domestico sarà mio erede».	3 Since you have given me no offspring,' Abram continued, 'a member of my household will be my heir.'
4 Ed ecco, gli fu rivolta questa parola dal Signore: «Non sarà costui il tuo erede, ma uno nato da te sarà il tuo erede».	4 Then Yahweh's word came to him in reply, 'Such a one wil not be your heir; no, your heir will be theissue of your own body.'
5 Poi lo condusse fuori e gli disse: «Guarda in cielo e conta le stelle, se riesci a contarle»; e soggiunse: «Tale sarà la tua discendenza».	5 Then taking him outside, he said, 'Look up at the sky and count the stars if you can. Just so wil yourdescendants be,' he told him.
6 Egli credette al Signore, che glielo accreditò come giustizia.	6 Abram put his faith in Yahweh and this was reckoned to him as uprightness.
7 E gli disse: «Io sono il Signore, che ti ho fatto uscire da Ur dei Caldei per darti in possesso questa terra».	7 He then said to him, 'I am Yahweh who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldaeans to give you thiscountry as your possession.'
8 Rispose: «Signore Dio, come potrò sapere che ne avrò il possesso?».	8 'Lord Yahweh,' Abram replied, 'how can I know that I shal possess it?'
9 Gli disse: «Prendimi una giovenca di tre anni, una capra di tre anni, un ariete di tre anni, una tortora e un colombo».	9 He said to him, 'Bring me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old she-goat, a three-year-old ram, aturtledove and a young pigeon.'
10 Andò a prendere tutti questi animali, li divise in due e collocò ogni metà di fronte all’altra; non divise però gli uccelli.	10 He brought him all these, split the animals down the middle and placed each half opposite the other;but the birds he did not divide.
11 Gli uccelli rapaci calarono su quei cadaveri, ma Abram li scacciò.	11 And whenever birds of prey swooped down on the carcases, Abram drove them off.
12 Mentre il sole stava per tramontare, un torpore cadde su Abram, ed ecco terrore e grande oscurità lo assalirono.	12 Now, as the sun was on the point of setting, a trance fel on Abram, and a deep dark dreaddescended on him.
13 Allora il Signore disse ad Abram: «Sappi che i tuoi discendenti saranno forestieri in una terra non loro; saranno fatti schiavi e saranno oppressi per quattrocento anni.	13 Then Yahweh said to Abram, 'Know this for certain, that your descendants will be exiles in a land nottheir own, and be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years.
14 Ma la nazione che essi avranno servito, la giudicherò io: dopo, essi usciranno con grandi ricchezze.	14 But I shal bring judgement on the nation that enslaves them and after this they wil leave, with manypossessions.
15 Quanto a te, andrai in pace presso i tuoi padri; sarai sepolto dopo una vecchiaia felice.	15 For your part, you wil join your ancestors in peace; you wil be buried at a happy old age.
16 Alla quarta generazione torneranno qui, perché l’iniquità degli Amorrei non ha ancora raggiunto il colmo».	16 In the fourth generation they wil come back here, for until then the iniquity of the Amorites wil nothave reached its ful extent.'
17 Quando, tramontato il sole, si era fatto buio fitto, ecco un braciere fumante e una fiaccola ardente passare in mezzo agli animali divisi.	17 When the sun had set and it was dark, there appeared a smoking firepot and a flaming torch passingbetween the animals' pieces.
18 In quel giorno il Signore concluse quest’alleanza con Abram: «Alla tua discendenza io do questa terra, dal fiume d’Egitto al grande fiume, il fiume Eufrate;	18 That day Yahweh made a covenant with Abram in these terms: 'To your descendants I give thiscountry, from the River of Egypt to the Great River, the River Euphrates,
19 la terra dove abitano i Keniti, i Kenizziti, i Kadmoniti,	19 the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites,
20 gli Ittiti, i Perizziti, i Refaìm,	20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,
21 gli Amorrei, i Cananei, i Gergesei e i Gebusei».	21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.'
