| 1 Quanto a Saulo, ancora esalando minacce di strage contro i discepoli di Gesù, si presentò al sommo sacerdote | 1 And Saul, as yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest, |
| 2 e gli domandò autorizzazione scritta all’indirizzo delle comunità di Damasco allo scopo di arrestare e tradurre a Gerusalemme tutti quanti, uomini e donne, gli aderenti alla nostra religione. | 2 And asked of him letters to Damascus, to the synagogues: that if he found any men and wemen of this way, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. |
| 3 Durante il viaggio avvenne che, nelle vicinanze di Damasco, un fulgore improvviso gli balenò intorno dal cielo. | 3 And as he went on his journey, it came to pass that he drew nigh to Damascus; and suddenly a light from heaven shined round about him. |
| 4 Stramazzato a terra, sentì una voce che gli diceva: «Saulo, Saulo, perché mi perseguiti?» | 4 And falling on the ground, he heard a voice saying to him: Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? |
| 5 Egli disse: «Chi sei, Signore?» E la voce: «Sono Gesù che tu perseguiti. | 5 Who said: Who art thou, Lord? And he: I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. It is hard for thee to kick against the goad. |
| 6 Ma tu àlzati ed entra in città e io ti farò dire quel che devi fare». | 6 And he trembling and astonished, said: Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? |
| 7 I compagni di viaggio, sentendo parlare e non vedendo nessuno, erano senza parola. | 7 And the Lord said to him: Arise, and go into the city, and there it shall be told thee what thou must do. Now the men who went in company with him, stood amazed, hearing indeed a voice, but seeing no man. |
| 8 Saulo, comunque, si rialzò, ma, per quanto aprisse gli occhi, non distingueva nulla; perciò, per introdurlo in Damasco, lo presero per mano. | 8 And Saul arose from the ground; and when his eyes were opened, he saw nothing. But they leading him by the hands, brought him to Damascus. |
| 9 Ed egli per tre giorni restò incapace di vedere e totalmente digiuno. | 9 And he was there three days, without sight, and he did neither eat nor drink. |
| 10 Ora viveva nella città un discepolo di nome Anania, che il Signore per mezzo di una visione chiamò: «Anania!» Rispose: «Eccomi, Signore». | 10 Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias. And the Lord said to him in a vision: Ananias. And he said: Behold I am here, Lord. |
| 11 Riprese il Signore Gesù: «Su, va’ nella via Dritta e cerca in casa di Giuda un certo Saulo di Tarso che sta pregando». | 11 And the Lord said to him: Arise, and go into the street that is called Stait, and seek in the house of Judas, one named Saul of Tarsus. For behold he prayeth. |
| 12 In realtà Saulo vide in visione un certo Anania venir da lui e imporgli le mani per ridonargli la vista. | 12 (And he saw a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hands upon him, that he might receive his sight.) |
| 13 Anania obiettò a Gesù: «Signore, da molti ho saputo di quest’uomo tutto il male che ha fatto in Gerusalemme ai tuoi fedeli, | 13 But Ananias answered: Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints in Jerusalem. |
| 14 e anche dai gran sacerdoti è autorizzato ad arrestare i tuoi adoratori». | 14 And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that invoke thy name. |
| 15 Gli rispose il Signore: «Va’ ugualmente, poiché quest'uomo è un mio strumento eletto per portare il mio evangelo davanti ai pagani, ai re e ai figli d’Israele. | 15 And the Lord said to him: Go thy way; for this man is to me a vessel of election, to carry my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel. |
| 16 E a me solo tocca mostrargli tutto quel che dovrà soffrire per la mia causa». | 16 For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake. |
| 17 Allora Anania si mosse. Entrò in quella casa e impose le mani a Saulo, dicendo queste parole: «Saulo, fratello mio, mi ha mandato il Signore, quel Gesù che ti è apparso in viaggio, affinché tu ricuperi la vista e sia riempito di Spirito Santo». | 17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house. And laying his hands upon him, he said: Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus hath sent me, he that appeared to thee in the way as thou camest; that thou mayest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. |
| 18 E all’istante caddero dai suoi occhi come delle croste ed egli riacquistò la vista, poi si preparò e fu battezzato, | 18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it were scales, and he received his sight; and rising up, he was baptized. |
| 19 infine mangiò e si ristorò. Stette poi diverso tempo con i cristiani di Damasco. | 19 And when he had taken meat, he was strengthened. And he was with the disciples that were at Damascus, for some days. |
| 20 In seguito usò predicar Gesù nelle sinagoghe in questi termini: «È lui il Figlio di Dio!» | 20 And immediately he preached Jesus in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. |
| 21 Chiunque lo udiva né rimaneva stupito e diceva: «Ma quest'uomo non è colui che a Gerusalemme perseguitava gli adoratori di Gesù e che qui era venuto precisamente con lo scopo di arrestarli e trascinarli davanti ai gran sacerdoti ?» | 21 And all that heard him, were astonished, and said: Is not this he who persecuted in Jerusalem those that called upon this name: and came hither for that intent, that he might carry them bound to the chief priests? |
| 22 Ma Saulo si fortificava ogni giorno più e riduceva al silenzio gli Ebrei residenti a Damasco dimostrando che Gesù era il Messia. | 22 But Saul increased much more in strength, and confounded the Jews who dwelt at Damascus, affirming that this is the Christ. |
| 23 Dopo molto tempo gli Ebrei stabilirono di ucciderlo. | 23 And when many days were passed, the Jews consulted together to kill him. |
| 24 Saulo però venne a conoscere le loro macchinazioni. Per ucciderlo essi vigilarono perfino le porte della città giorno e notte; | 24 But their laying in wait was made known to Saul. And they watched the gates also day and night, that they might kill him. |
| 25 finché i discepoli lo presero e di notte lo calarono lungo le mura in una cesta. | 25 But the disciples taking him in the night, conveyed him away by the wall, letting him down in a basket. |
| 26 Arrivato a Gerusalemme tentò ripetutamente di associarsi ai cristiani, ma tutti ne avevano paura non credendolo un cristiano. | 26 And when he was come into Jerusalem, he essayed to join himself to the disciples; and they all were afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple. |
| 27 Soltanto Barnaba lo prese e lo condusse dagli Apostoli ai quali raccontò in che modo Saulo durante il viaggio aveva visto il Signore, quel che Gesù gli aveva detto, e in che modo Saulo a Damasco avesse impavidamente parlato nel nome di Gesù. | 27 But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and told them how he had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken to him; and how in Damascus he had dealt confidently in the name of Jesus. |
| 28 Da allora Saulo visse con loro a Gerusalemme parlando animosamente nel nome del Signore Gesù, | 28 And he was with them coming in and going out in Jerusalem, and dealing confidently in the name of the Lord. |
| 29 e spesso aveva colloqui e discussioni con gli Ebrei della diaspora, i quali cercavano di ucciderlo. | 29 He spoke also to the Gentiles, and disputed with the Greeks; but they sought to kill him. |
| 30 Ma i cristiani, avutone sentore, lo condussero a Cesarea e di là lo fecero partire per Tarso. | 30 Which when the brethren had known, they brought him down to Caesarea, and sent him away to Tarsus. |
| 31 Intanto la Chiesa attraverso l’intera Giudea, Galilea e Samaria godeva pace continua e progrediva e viveva nel timor di Dio, mentre con la consolazione dello Spirito Santo si moltiplicava. | 31 Now the church had peace throughout all Judea, and Galilee, and Samaria; and was edified, walking in the fear of the Lord, and was filled with the consolation of the Holy Ghost. |
| 32 Avvenne allora che Pietro, toccando tutte le jocalità, scese anche presso i cristiani residenti a Lidda. | 32 And it came to pass that Peter, as he passed through, visiting all, came to the saints who dwelt at Lydda. |
| 33 Là trovò un paralitico chiamato Enea, giacente da otto anni in un lettuccio. | 33 And he found there a certain man named Eneas, who had kept his bed for eight years, who was ill of the palsy. |
| 34 Gli disse Pietro: «Enea, Gesù Cristo ti ha guarito: àlzati e rifatti il letto». | 34 And Peter said to him: Eneas, the Lord Jesus Christ healeth thee: arise, and make thy bed. And immediately he arose. |
| 35 E lo videro tutti gli abitanti di Lidda e del Saron e si convertirono al Signore Gesù. | 35 And all that dwelt at Lydda and Saron, saw him: who were converted to the Lord. |
| 36 Nella città di Joppe si trovava una cristiana di nome Tabita, che significa «Gazzella», donna benemerita per opere buone, vale a dire per continue elemosine. | 36 And in Joppe there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas. This woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did. |
| 37 Giusto in quei giorni avvenne che cadde ammalata e morì, dopodichè fu lavata e deposta nella sala superiore. | 37 And it came to pass in those days that she was sick, and died. Whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber. |
| 38 Data la vicinanza di Lidda a Joppe, i cristiani seppero della presenza di Pietro in quella città e gli mandarono due uomini a supplicarlo: «Vieni subito da noi». | 38 And forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppe, the disciples hearing that Peter was there, sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not be slack to come unto them. |
| 39 Immediatamente Pietro si mise in cammino con loro e appena fu arrivato fu fatto salire alla sala superiore. Là gli si presentarono tutte le vedove singhiozzando e mostrando le loro tuniche e i mantelli: quando Gazzella era in vita era lei che li confezionava. | 39 And Peter rising up, went with them. And when he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber. And all the widows stood about him weeping, and shewing him the coats and garments which Dorcas made them. |
| 40 Pietro pertanto fece uscire tutti, quindi s’inginocchiò e pregò, infine si volse al cadavere con queste parole: «Tabita, Alzati!» Quella spiù gli occhi e, visto Pietro, sì levò a sedere. | 40 And they all being put forth, Peter kneeling down prayed, and turning to the body, he said: Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes; and seeing Peter, she sat up. |
| 41 Allora Pietro le porse ja mano e la fece alzare, poi chiamò i cristiani e le vedove e la presentò loro viva. | 41 And giving her his hand, he lifted her up. And when he had called the saints and the widows, he presented her alive. |
| 42 Il fatto si riseppe in tutta Joppe e molti credettero in Gesù. | 42 And it was made known throughout all Joppe; and many believed in the Lord. |
| 43 Pietro, beninteso, si trattenne lungo tempo a Joppe ospite di un certo Simone conciatore di pelli. | 43 And it came to pass, that he abode many days in Joppe, with one Simon a tanner. |
