| 2 Cinque, però, di loro erano stolte, e cinque prudenti; | 2 Five of them were foolish and five were sensible: |
| 3 le stolte, infatti, nel prendere le loro lucerne non presero l’olio con sé, | 3 the foolish ones, though they took their lamps, took no oil with them, |
| 4 ma le prudenti, insieme con le loro lucerne, presero atiche dei recipienti con l’olio. | 4 whereas the sensible ones took flasks of oil as wel as their lamps. |
| 5 Tardando a venire lo sposo, tutte si assopirono e si addormentarono. | 5 The bridegroom was late, and they al grew drowsy and fell asleep. |
| 6 A mezzanotte, risuonò un grido: “Ecco lo sposo: uscitegli incontro!”, | 6 But at midnight there was a cry, "Look! The bridegroom! Go out and meet him." |
| 7 Allora tutte quelle vergini si destarono e prepararono le loro lucerne. | 7 Then al those wedding attendants woke up and trimmed their lamps, |
| 8 Le stolte dissero alle prudenti: “Dateci un po’ del vostro olio perché le nostre lucerne si spengono”. | 8 and the foolish ones said to the sensible ones, "Give us some of your oil: our lamps are going out." |
| 9 Ma le prudenti risposero: “Non basterebbe mai per noi e per voi; andate piuttosto dai venditori e compratevene”, | 9 But they replied, "There may not be enough for us and for you; you had better go to those who sel itand buy some for yourselves." |
| 10 Mentre esse andavano a comprarne giunse lo sposo; quelle che erano pronte entrarono con lui nella sala del festino e fu chiusa la porta. | 10 They had gone off to buy it when the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him tothe wedding hall and the door was closed. |

| 12 Ma egli rispose: “In verità vi dico: Non vi conosco”. | 12 But he replied, "In truth I tel you, I do not know you." |
| 13 Vegliate, dunque, perché voi non sapete né il giorno né l’ora. | 13 So stay awake, because you do not know either the day or the hour. |
| 14 È, infatti, come un uomo il quale, in procinto di partire, chiamò i propri servi ed affidò loro i suoi beni. | 14 'It is like a man about to go abroad who summoned his servants and entrusted his property to them. |
| 15 Ad uno diede cinque talenti, a un altro due e ad un altro uno, a ciascuno secondo la sua capacità. Poi partì. | 15 To one he gave five talents, to another two, to a third one, each in proportion to his ability. Then heset out on his journey. |

| 20 E, fattosi avanti quello che aveva ricevuto cinque talenti, ne portò altri cinque dicendo: “Padrone, mi hai affidato cinque talenti; ecco, ne ho guadagnati altri cinque”. | 20 The man who had received the five talents came forward bringing five more. "Sir," he said, "youentrusted me with five talents; here are five more that I have made." |
| 21 Il padrone gli disse: “Bravo, servo buono e fedele; sei stato fedele nel poco, ti darò potere su molto: entra nella gioia del tuo padrone”. | 21 His master said to him, "Well done, good and trustworthy servant; you have shown you aretrustworthy in small things; I wil trust you with greater; come and join in your master's happiness." |

| 26 Ma il padrone gli rispose: “Servo malvagio e fannullone, sapevi che mieto dove non ho seminato e raccolgo dove non ho sparso! | 26 But his master answered him, "You wicked and lazy servant! So you knew that I reap where I havenot sown and gather where I have not scattered? |
| 27 dovevi, dunque, depositare il mio denaro dai banchieri, e al mio ritorno avrei ritirato il mio con l’interesse. | 27 Well then, you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have gotmy money back with interest. |

| 31 Quando verrà il Figlio dell’uomo nella sua gloria, accompagnato da tutti gli angeli, sederà sul suo trono di gloria. | 31 'When the Son of man comes in his glory, escorted by al the angels, then he will take his seat on histhrone of glory. |
| 32 Davanti a lui si raduneranno tutte le genti, ed egli separerà gli uni dagli altri come il pastore separa le pecore dai capri; | 32 Al nations wil be assembled before him and he wil separate people one from another as theshepherd separates sheep from goats. |
| 33 e porrà le pecore alla sua destra e i capri a sinistra. | 33 He will place the sheep on his right hand and the goats on his left. |
| 34 Allora il re dirà a coloro che sono alla sua destra: “Venite, o benedetti del Padre mio, prendete possesso del regno peparato per voi fino dalla fondazione del mondo. | 34 Then the King wil say to those on his right hand, "Come, you whom my Father has blessed, take asyour heritage the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world. |
| 35 Perché ho avuto fame e mi avete dato da mangiare; ho avuto sete e mi avete dato da bere; sono stato forestiero e mi avete accolto; | 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger andyou made me welcome, |
| 36 nudo e mi avete ricoperto; sono stato malato e mi avete visitato; sono stato in carcere e siete venuti a trovarmi”. | 36 lacking clothes and you clothed me, sick and you visited me, in prison and you came to see me." |
| 37 Allora i giusti gli risponderanno: “Signore, quando ti abbiamo veduto affamato e ti abbiamo dato da mangiare, o assetato e ti abbiam dato da bere? | 37 Then the upright will say to him in reply, "Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirstyand give you drink? |
| 38 e quando ti abbiamo veduto forestiero e ti abbiamo accolto, o nudo e ti abbiamo ricoperto? | 38 When did we see you a stranger and make you welcome, lacking clothes and clothe you? |
| 39 e quando ti abbiamo veduto malato o in carcere e siamo venuti a trovarti?”. | 39 When did we find you sick or in prison and go to see you?" |
| 40 E il re risponderà: “In verità vi dico: ogni volta che l’avete fatto al più piccolo dei miei fratelli, lo avete fatto a me”. | 40 And the King wil answer, "In truth I tel you, in so far as you did this to one of the least of thesebrothers of mine, you did it to me." |
| 41 Allora dirà anche a quelli di sinistra: “Andatevene lontano da me, maledetti, nel fuoco eterno preparato al diavolo e agli angeli suoi. | 41 Then he will say to those on his left hand, "Go away from me, with your curse upon you, to theeternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. |
| 42 Perché ho avuto fame e non mi avete dato da mangiare; ho avuto sete e non mi avete dato da bere; | 42 For I was hungry and you never gave me food, I was thirsty and you never gave me anything to drink, |
| 43 sono stato forestiero e non mi avete accolto, nudo e non mi avete ricoperto, malato e in carcere e non mi avete visitato”. | 43 I was a stranger and you never made me welcome, lacking clothes and you never clothed me, sickand in prison and you never visited me." |
| 44 Allora anch’essi risponderanno: “Signore, quando ti abbiamo veduto aver fame o sete, o forestiero nudo o malato o in carcere, e non ti abbiamo assistito?”. | 44 Then it wil be their turn to ask, "Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty, a stranger or lackingclothes, sick or in prison, and did not come to your help?" |
| 45 Allora risponderà loro: “In verità vi dico: ogni volta che non lo avete fatto ad uno di questi, i più piccoli, neppure a me lo avete fatto”. | 45 Then he will answer, "In truth I tel you, in so far as you neglected to do this to one of the least ofthese, you neglected to do it to me." |
| 46 E se ne andranno costoro al supplizio eterno e i giusti alla vita eterna». | 46 And they wil go away to eternal punishment, and the upright to eternal life.' |
