Job 21

BIBLIA	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Job tomó la palabra y dijo:	1 Then Job said in reply:
2 Escuchad, escuchad mis razones, dadme siquiera este consuelo.	2 At least listen to my words, and let that be the consolation you offer.
3 Tened paciencia mientras hablo yo, cuando haya hablado, os podréis burlar.	3 Bear with me while I speak; and after I have spoken, you can mock!
4 ¿Acaso me quejo yo de un hombre? ¿Por qué entonces no he de ser impaciente?	4 Is my complaint toward man? And why should I not be impatient?
5 Volved hacia mí: quedaréis espantados y la mano pondréis en vuestra boca.	5 Look at me and be astonished, put your hands over your mouths.
6 Que yo mismo me horrorizo al recordarlo, y mi carne es presa de un escalofrío.	6 When I think of it, I am dismayed, and horror takes hold on my flesh.
7 ¿Por qué siguen viviendo los malvados, envejecen y aún crecen en poder?	7 Why do the wicked survive, grow old, become mighty in power?
8 Su descendencia ante ellos se afianza, sus vástagos se afirman a su vista.	8 Their progeny is secure in their sight; they see before them their kinsfolk and their offspring.
9 En paz sus casas, nada temen, la vara de Dios no cae sobre ellos.	9 Their homes are safe and without fear, nor is the scourge of God upon them.
10 Su toro fecunda sin marrar, sin abortar su vaca pare.	10 Their bulls gender without fail; their cows calve and do not miscarry.
11 Dejan correr a sus niños como ovejas, sus hijos brincan como ciervos.	11 These folk have infants numerous as lambs, and their children dance.
12 Cantan con arpa y cítara, al son de la flauta se divierten.	12 They sing to the timbrel and harp, and make merry to the sound of the flute.
13 Acaban su vida en la ventura, en paz descienden al seol.	13 They live out their days in prosperity, and tranquilly go down to the nether world.
14 Y con todo, a Dios decían: «¡Lejos de nosotros, no queremos conocer tus caminos!	14 Yet they say to God, "Depart from us, for we have no wish to learn your ways!
15 ¿Qué es Sadday para que le sirvamos, qué podemos ganar con aplacarle?»	15 What is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what gain shall we have if we pray to him?"
16 ¿No está en sus propias manos su ventura, aunque el consejo de los malos quede lejos de Dios?	16 If their happiness is not in their own hands and if the counsel of the wicked is repulsive to God,
17 ¿Cuántas veces la lámpara de los malos se apaga, su desgracia irrumpe sobre ellos, y él reparte dolores en su cólera?	17 How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? How often does destruction come upon them, the portion he allots in his anger?
18 ¿Son como paja ante el viento, como tamo que arrebata un torbellino?	18 Let them be like straw before the wind, and like chaff which the storm snatches away!
19 ¿Va a guardar Dios para sus hijos su castigo? ¡que le castigue a él, para que sepa!	19 May God not store up the man's misery for his children; let him requite the man himself so that he feels it,
20 ¡Vea su ruina con sus propios ojos, beba de la furia de Sadday!	20 Let his own eyes see the calamity, and the wrath of the Almighty let him drink!
21 ¿Qué le importa la suerte de su casa, después de él, cuando se haya cortado la cuenta de sus meses?	21 For what interest has he in his family after him, when the number of his months is finished?
22 Pero, ¿se enseña a Dios la ciencia? ¡Si es él quien juzga a los seres más excelsos!	22 Can anyone teach God knowledge, seeing that he judges those on high?
23 Hay quien muere en su pleno vigor, en el colmo de la dicha y de la paz,	23 One dies in his full vigor, wholly at ease and content;
24 repletos de grasa su ijares, bien empapado el meollo de sus huesos.	24 His figure is full and nourished, and his bones are rich in marrow.
25 Y hay quien muere, la amargura en el alma, sin haber gustado la ventura.	25 Another dies in bitterness of soul, having never tasted happiness.
26 Juntos luego se acuestan en el polvo, y los gusanos los recubren.	26 Alike they lie down in the dust, and worms cover them both.
27 ¡Oh, sé muy bien lo que pensáis, las malas ideas que os formáis sobre mí!	27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the arguments you rehearse against me.
28 «¿Dónde está, os decís, la casa del magnate? ¿dónde la tienda que habitaban los malos?»	28 For you say, "Where is the house of the magnate, and where the dwelling place of the wicked?"
29 ¿No habéis interrogado a los viandantes? ¿no os han pasmado los casos que refieren?	29 Have you not asked the wayfarers and do you not recognize their monuments?
30 Que el malo es preservado en el día del desastre, en el día de los furores queda a salvo.	30 Nay, the evil man is spared calamity when it comes;
31 Pues, ¿quién le echa en cara su conducta y le da el merecido de su obras?	31 Who will charge him with his conduct to his face, and for what he has done who will repay him?
32 Cuando es llevado al cementerio, sobre el mausoleo hace vela.	32 and on the day he is carried to the grave
33 Dulces le son los terrones del torrente, y detrás de él desfila todo el mundo.	33 Sweet to him are the clods of the valley, and over him the funeral mound keeps watch, While all the line of mankind follows him, and the countless others who have gone before.
34 ¿Cómo, pues, me consoláis tan en vano? ¡Pura falacia son vuestras respuestas!	34 How then can you offer me vain comfort, while in your answers perfidy remains?
