VULGATANEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Noli facere mala, et non te apprehendent :
1 Do no evil, and evil will not overtake you;
2 discede ab iniquo, et deficient mala abs te.
2 avoid wickedness, and it will turn aside from you.
3 Fili, non semines mala in sulcis injustitiæ,
et non metes ea in septuplum.
3 Sow not in the furrows of injustice, lest you harvest it sevenfold.
4 Noli quærere a Domino ducatum,
neque a rege cathedram honoris.
4 Seek not from the LORD authority, nor from the king a place of honor.
5 Non te justifices ante Deum,
quoniam agnitor cordis ipse est :
et penes regem noli velle videri sapiens.
5 Parade not your justice before the Lord, and before the king flaunt not your wisdom.
6 Noli quærere fieri judex,
nisi valeas virtute irrumpere iniquitates :
ne forte extimescas faciem potentis,
et ponas scandalum in æquitate tua.
6 Seek not to become a judge if you have not strength to root out crime, Or you will show favor to the ruler and mar your integrity.
7 Non pecces in multitudinem civitatis,
nec te immittas in populum :
7 Be guilty of no evil before the city's populace, nor disgrace yourself before the assembly.
8 neque alliges duplicia peccata,
nec enim in uno eris immunis.
8 Do not plot to repeat a sin; not even for one will you go unpunished.
9 Noli esse pusillanimis in animo tuo :
9 Say not: "He will appreciate my many gifts; the Most High will accept my offerings."
10 exorare et facere eleemosynam ne despicias.
10 Be not impatient in prayers, and neglect not the giving of alms.
11 Ne dicas : In multitudine munerum meorum respiciet Deus,
et offerente me Deo altissimo, munera mea suscipiet.
11 Laugh not at an embittered man; be mindful of him who exalts and humbles.
12 Non irrideas hominem in amaritudine animæ :
est enim qui humiliat et exaltat circumspector Deus.
12 Plot no mischief against your brother, nor against your friend and companion.
13 Noli amare mendacium adversus fratrem tuum,
neque in amicum similiter facias.
13 Delight not in telling lie after lie, for it never results in good.
14 Noli velle mentiri omne mendacium :
assiduitas enim illius non est bona.
14 Thrust not yourself into the deliberations of princes, and repeat not the words of your prayer.
15 Noli verbosus esse in multitudine presbyterorum,
et non iteres verbum in oratione tua.
15 Hate not laborious tasks, nor farming, which was ordained by the Most High.
16 Non oderis laboriosa opera,
et rusticationem creatam ab Altissimo.
16 Do not esteem yourself better than your fellows; remember, his wrath will not delay.
17 Non te reputes in multitudine indisciplinatorum.
17 More and more, humble your pride; what awaits man is worms.
18 Memento iræ, quoniam non tardabit.
18 Barter not a friend for money, nor a dear brother for the gold of Ophir.
19 Humilia valde spiritum tuum,
quoniam vindicta carnis impii ignis et vermis.
19 Dismiss not a sensible wife; a gracious wife is more precious than corals.
20 Noli prævaricari in amicum pecuniam differentem,
neque fratrem carissimum auro spreveris.
20 Mistreat not a servant who faithfully serves, nor a laborer who devotes himself to his task.
21 Noli discedere a muliere sensata et bona,
quam sortitus es in timore Domini :
gratia enim verecundiæ illius super aurum.
21 Let a wise servant be dear to you as your own self; refuse him not his freedom.
22 Non lædas servum in veritate operantem,
neque mercenarium dantem animam suam.
22 If you have livestock, look after them; if they are dependable, keep them.
23 Servus sensatus sit tibi dilectus quasi anima tua :
non defraudes illum libertate,
neque inopem derelinquas illum.
23 If you have sons, chastise them; bend their necks from childhood.
24 Pecora tibi sunt, attende illis :
et si sunt utilia, perseverent apud te.
24 If you have daughters, keep them chaste, and be not indulgent to them.
25 Filii tibi sunt ? erudi illos,
et curva illos a pueritia illorum.
25 Giving your daughter in marriage ends a great task; but give her to a worthy man.
26 Filiæ tibi sunt ? serva corpus illarum,
et non ostendas hilarem faciem tuam ad illas.
26 If you have a wife, let her not seem odious to you; but where there is ill-feeling, trust her not.
27 Trade filiam, et grande opus feceris :
et homini sensato da illam.
27 With your whole heart honor your father; your mother's birthpangs forget not.
28 Mulier si est tibi secundum animam tuam, non projicias illam :
et odibili non credas te.
In toto corde tuo
28 Remember, of these parents you were born; what can you give them for all they gave you?
29 honora patrem tuum,
et gemitus matris tuæ ne obliviscaris :
29 With all your soul, fear God, revere his priests.
30 memento quoniam nisi per illos natus non fuisses :
et retribue illis, quomodo et illi tibi.
30 With all your strength, love your Creator, forsake not his ministers.
31 In tota anima tua time Dominum,
et sacerdotes illius sanctifica.
31 Honor God and respect the priest; give him his portion as you have been commanded: First fruits and contributions, due sacrifices and holy offerings.
32 In omni virtute tua dilige eum qui te fecit,
et ministros ejus ne derelinquas.
32 To the poor man also extend your hand, that your blessing may be complete;
33 Honora Deum ex tota anima tua,
et honorifica sacerdotes,
et propurga te cum brachiis.
33 Be generous to all the living, and withhold not your kindness from the dead.
34 Da illis partem, sicut mandatum est tibi, primitiarum et purgationis,
et de negligentia tua purga te cum paucis.
34 Avoid not those who weep, but mourn with those who mourn;
35 Datum brachiorum tuorum,
et sacrificium sanctificationis offeres Domino,
et initia sanctorum.
35 Neglect not to visit the sick-- for these things you will be loved.
36 Et pauperi porrige manum tuam,
ut perficiatur propitiatio et benedictio tua.
36 In whatever you do, remember your last days, and you will never sin.
37 Gratia dati in conspectu omnis viventis,
et mortuo non prohibeas gratiam.
38 Non desis plorantibus in consolatione,
et cum lugentibus ambula.
39 Non te pigeat visitare infirmum :
ex his enim in dilectione firmaberis.
40 In omnibus operibus tuis memorare novissima tua,
et in æternum non peccabis.
