BIBBIA TINTORI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 E il Signore parlò a Mosè, dicendo:	1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,
2 « Prima vendica i figli d'Israele da Madianiti, e poi andrai a raggiungere tuoi padri ».	2 'Exact the ful vengeance for the Israelites on the Midianites. Afterwards you will be gathered to yourpeople.'
3 E Mosè disse subito: « Arma te per la battaglia alcuni vostri uomini che possan fare la vendetta del Signore sopra i Madianiti.	3 Moses said to the people, 'Some of you are to take up arms for Yahweh's campaign against Midian,to carry out the vengeance of Yahweh on Midian.
4 Da ogni tribù d'Israele siano scelti mille uominda mandarsi a questa guerra ».	4 You will put a thousand men in the field from each of the tribes of Israel.'
5 Dettero dunque mille uomini per tribù, cioè dodici mila uomini pronti a combattere	5 In this way Israel's thousands provided twelve thousand men equipped for war, one thousand fromeach tribe:
6 Mosè li mandò con Finees figlio di Eleazaro sacerdote, al quale diede i vasi santi e le trombe per sonare.	6 Moses put them in the field, one thousand from each tribe, with Phinehas, son of the priest Eleazar,to go with them carrying the sacred objects and the trumpets for the battle cry.
7 Essi combatterono contro i Madianiti, e vintili ne uccisero tutti i maschi,	7 They made war on Midian, as Yahweh had ordered Moses, and put every male to death.
8 e i loro re, Evi, Becem, Sur, Hur e Rebe, cinque principi di quella nazione, e uccisero colla spada anche Balaam figlio di Beor.	8 What is more, they kil ed the kings of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba, the five Midianite kings;they also put Balaam son of Beor to the sword.
9 Presero poi le loro donne, i loro fanciulli, tutti i loro bestiami ed ogni loro bene, e saccheggiarono ogni loro avere:	9 The Israelites took the Midianite women and their little ones captive and carried off al their cattle, altheir flocks and al their goods as booty.
10 Il fuoco consumò le città, i villaggi e i castelli.	10 They set fire to the towns where they lived and to al their encampments.
11 E tolsero la preda e tutto quello che avevan preso d'uomini e di bestie,	11 Then, taking al their booty, everything they had captured, human and animal,
12 e lo condussero davanti a Mosè, ad Eleazaro sacerdote, e a tutta la moltitudine dei figli d'Israele, anche le altre cose che potevan servire le portarono agli accampamenti nelle pianure di Moab, vicino al Giordano, dirimpetto a Gerico.	12 they brought the captives, spoil and booty to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the whole community ofIsraelites at the camp on the Plains of Moab, near the Jordan by Jericho.
13 Mosè, il sommo sacerdote Eleazaro e tutti i principi della sinagoga andarono loro incontro fuor degli accampamenti.	13 Moses, the priest Eleazar and al the leaders of the community went out of the camp to meet them.
14 E Mosè, sdegnato contro i capi dell esercito, i tribuni e i centurioni che tornavano dalla guerra,	14 Moses was enraged with the officers of the army, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, who had come back from this military expedition.
15 disse: « Perchè avete risparmiato le donne?	15 He said, 'Why have you spared the life of al the women?
16 Non sono forse state esse che, a suggestione di Balaam, sedussero i figli d Israele, e vi fecero prevaricar contro il Signore col peccato di Fogor, che fu causa di flagelli anche al popolo?	16 They were the very ones who, on Balaam's advice, caused the Israelites to be unfaithful to Yahwehin the affair at Peor: hence the plague which struck Yahweh's community.
17 Or dunque uccidete tutti i maschi anche di tenera età, e tutte le donne che han conosciuto l'uomo,	17 So kil al the male children and kil al the women who have ever slept with a man;
18 serbate invece per voi le fanciulle e tutte le donne vergini.	18 but spare the lives of the young girls who have never slept with a man, and keep them foryourselves.
19 Restate per sette giorni fuori degli accampamenti; e chi avrà ucciso un uomo o toccato un cadavere si purifichi il terzo e il settimo giorno.	19 As for you, bivouac outside the camp for seven days, everyone who has kil ed anyone or touched acorpse. Purify yourselves and your prisoners on the third and seventh days,
20 E di ciò che avete preso sarà purificata ogni veste, ogni vaso, ogni utensile fatto di pelli di capra, o di peli, o di legno ».	20 and purify al clothing, everything made of skin, everything woven of goat's hair and everythingmade of wood.'
21 Parlò ai soldati che erano stati alla battaglia anche il sommo sacerdote Eleazaro, e disse: « Ecco l'ordine della legge data dal Signore a Mosè:	21 The priest Eleazar said to the soldiers who had come back from the campaign, 'This is an article ofthe Law which Yahweh prescribed to Moses:
22 L'oro, l'argento, il rame, il ferro, il piombo, lo stagno,	22 although gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin and lead,
23 e tutto ciò che può passar per le fiamme, sia purificato col fuoco; ma tutto ciò che non può reggere al fuoco sia purificato coll'acqua di espiazione.	23 everything that can withstand fire can be cleaned by being passed through fire, it must stil bepurified with water for purification. Whatever cannot resist fire you must pass through water.
24 Vi laverete le vesti al settimo giorno e, purificati, entrerete negli accampamenti ».	24 'Wash your clothes on the seventh day and you wil then be clean. You may then re-enter the camp.'
25 Disse poi il Signore a Mosè:	25 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:
26 « Tu, il sacerdote Eleazaro e i principi del popolo fate il conto di ciò che è stato preso, della gente e del bestiame;	26 'With the priest Eleazar and the heads of families in the community, take a count of the spoils andcaptives, human and animal.
27 poi dividi la preda in parti uguali tra quelli cne sono andati alla guerra a combattere e tutto il resto della moltitudine.	27 You wil then share out the spoil, half and half, between those who fought the campaign and the restof the community.
28 E dalla parte di coloro che arndarono alla guerra a combattere sepaerai la parte del Signore: un capo ogni cinquecento, sia degli uomini che dei buoi, degli asini e delle pecore,	28 From the share of the combatants who took part in the campaign, you wil set aside one out of everyfive hundred persons, oxen, donkeys and sheep as Yahweh's portion.
29 e la darai al sacerdote Eleazaro, perchè queste son le primizie del Signore.	29 You wil take this from the half share coming to them and give it to the priest Eleazar as the portionset aside for Yahweh.
30 Dell'altra parte poi che appartiene ai figli d'Israele prenderai un capo ogni cinquanta, degli uomini, dei buoi, degli asini, delle pecore e di tutti gli animali, e lo darai ai leviti che vegliano alla custodia del Tabernacolo del Signore ».	30 From the half coming to the Israelites, you will take one out of every fifty persons, oxen, donkeys,sheep, and al other animals, and give them to the Levites who are responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing.'
31 E Mosè ed Eleazaro fecero come il Signore aveva comandato.	31 Moses and the priest Eleazar did as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
32 Or la preda che l'esercito aveva fatta fu di seicentosettanta cinque mila pecore,	32 The spoils, the remainder of the booty captured by the soldiers, came to six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep and goats,
33 settantadue mila buoi,	33 seventy-two thousand head of cattle,
34 sessant'un mila asini,	34 sixty-one thousand donkeys,
35 trentadue mila donne che non avevan conosciuto uomo.	35 and in persons, women who had never slept with a man, thirty-two thousand in al .
36 La metà fu data a chi era stato alla battaglia: delle trecentotrentasette mila cinquecento pecore	36 Half was assigned to those who had taken part in the war, namely three hundred and thirty-seventhousand five hundred sheep and goats,
37 ne furon messe a parte pel Signore seicentosettantacinque;	37 of which Yahweh's portion was six hundred and seventy-five,
38 dei trentasei mila buoi, settantadue;	38 thirty-six thousand head of cattle, of which Yahweh's portion was seventy-two,
39 dei trenta mila cinquecento asini, sessant'uno;	39 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, of which Yahweh's portion was sixty-one,
40 delle sedici mila persone toccarono trentadue alla parte del Signore.	40 and sixteen thousand persons, of which Yahweh's portion was thirty-two.
41 E Mosè, come gli era stato comandato, diede al sacerdote Eleazaro il numero delle primizie del Signore,	41 Moses gave the priest Eleazar the portion set aside for Yahweh, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
42 prelevandolo su quella metà che era stata assegnata ai figli d'Israele stati alla guerra.	42 As for the half coming to the Israelites which Moses had separated from that of the combatants,
43 E sull'altra metà toccata al restante della moltitudine, cioè sulle trecentotrentasette mila cinquecento pecore,	43 this half, the community's share, came to three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundredsheep and goats,
44 sui trentasei mila buoi,	44 thirty-six thousand head of cattle,
45 sui trenta mila cinquecento asini,	45 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys
46 e sulle sedici mila persone,	46 and sixteen thousand persons.
47 Mosè tolse un capo ogni cinquanta e li diede ai leviti, che vegliavano nel Tabernacolo del Signore, come il Signore aveva ordinato.	47 From this half, the Israelites' share, Moses took one out of every fifty, human and animal, and gavethem to the Levites who were responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
48 E i capi dell'esercito, i tribuni e i centurioni s'avvicinarono a Mosè e gli dissero:	48 The officers of the thousands who had fought the campaign, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, came to Moses
49 « Noi tuoi servi abbiamo fatto il conto dei combattenti che avevamo sotto di noi: non ne manca nemmeno uno.	49 and said, 'Your servants have numbered the soldiers under their command: none of our men ismissing.
50 E quindi offriamo in dono al Signore ciascuno ciò che ha trovato d'oro nella preda: catenelle, braccialetti, anelli, orecchini e vezzi, affinchè tu preghi il Signore per noi ».	50 So, as an offering for Yahweh, we have brought what each of us has found in the way of goldornaments, armlets and bracelets, rings, earrings and breastplates, to make expiation for ourselves beforeYahweh.'
51 E Mosè e il sacerdote Eleazaro ricévettero l'oro in diverse specie:	51 Moses and the priest Eleazar accepted this gold from them, al this jewel ery.
52 quello ricevuto dai tribuni e dai centurioni pesava sedici mila settecento cinquanta sicli.	52 This portion of gold given to Yahweh by the commanders of the thousands and commanders of thehundreds amounted to sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.
53 Ciascuno poi tenne per sè le altre cose predate nel saccheggio.	53 Each of the soldiers took his own booty.
54 L'oro fu preso e portato nel Tabernacolo della testimonianza, come un monumento dei figli d'Israele davanti al Signore.	54 But Moses and the priest Eleazar, having accepted the gold from the commanders of the thousandsand commanders of the hundreds, brought it into the Tent of Meeting, to be a reminder of the Israelites beforeYahweh.
