1 Queste sono le parole della lettera che il profeta Geremia mandò da Gerusalemme al resto degli anziani in esilio, ai sacerdoti, ai profeti e a tutto il popolo che Nabucodònosor aveva deportato da Gerusalemme a Babilonia;	1 This is the text of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to those who were left of theelders in exile, to the priests, the prophets and all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had deported fromJerusalem to Babylon.
2 la mandò dopo che il re Ieconia, la regina madre, i dignitari di corte, i capi di Giuda e di Gerusalemme, gli artigiani e i fabbri erano partiti da Gerusalemme.	2 This was after King Jeconiah had left Jerusalem with the queen mother, the eunuchs, the chief men ofJudah and Jerusalem, and the blacksmiths and metalworkers.
3 Fu recata per mezzo di Elasà, figlio di Safan, e di Ghemaria, figlio di Chelkia, che Sedecìa, re di Giuda, aveva inviati a Nabucodònosor, re di Babilonia, a Babilonia. Essa diceva:	3 The letter was entrusted to Elasah son of Shaphan and to Gemariah son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiahking of Judah had sent to Babylon, to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. The letter said:
4 «Così dice il Signore degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele, a tutti gli esuli che ho fatto deportare da Gerusalemme a Babilonia:	4 'Yahweh Sabaoth, the God of Israel, says this to al the exiles deported from Jerusalem to Babylon:
5 Costruite case e abitatele, piantate orti e mangiatene i frutti;	5 Build houses, settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce;
6 prendete moglie e mettete al mondo figli e figlie, scegliete mogli per i figli e maritate le figlie, e costoro abbiano figlie e figli. Lì moltiplicatevi e non diminuite.	6 marry and have sons and daughters; choose wives for your sons, find husbands for your daughters sothat these can bear sons and daughters in their turn; you must increase there and not decrease.
7 Cercate il benessere del paese in cui vi ho fatto deportare, e pregate per esso il Signore, perché dal benessere suo dipende il vostro.	7 Work for the good of the city to which I have exiled you; pray to Yahweh on its behalf, since on itswelfare yours depends.
8 Così dice il Signore degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele: Non vi traggano in errore i profeti che sono in mezzo a voi e i vostri indovini; non date retta ai sogni che essi sognano,	8 For Yahweh Sabaoth, the God of Israel, says this: Do not be deceived by the prophets who are withyou or by your diviners; do not listen to the dreams you have,
9 perché falsamente profetizzano nel mio nome: io non li ho inviati. Oracolo del Signore.	9 since they prophesy lies to you in my name. I have not sent them, Yahweh declares.
10 Pertanto così dice il Signore: Quando saranno compiuti a Babilonia settant’anni, vi visiterò e realizzerò la mia buona promessa di ricondurvi in questo luogo.	10 For Yahweh says this: When the seventy years granted to Babylon are over, I shal intervene on yourbehalf and fulfil my favourable promise to you by bringing you back to this place.
11 Io conosco i progetti che ho fatto a vostro riguardo – oracolo del Signore –, progetti di pace e non di sventura, per concedervi un futuro pieno di speranza.	11 Yes, I know what plans I have in mind for you, Yahweh declares, plans for peace, not for disaster, togive you a future and a hope.
12 Voi mi invocherete e ricorrerete a me e io vi esaudirò.	12 When you cal to me and come and pray to me, I shal listen to you.
13 Mi cercherete e mi troverete, perché mi cercherete con tutto il cuore;	13 When you search for me, you will find me; when you search wholeheartedly for me,
14 mi lascerò trovare da voi. Oracolo del Signore. Cambierò in meglio la vostra sorte e vi radunerò da tutte le nazioni e da tutti i luoghi dove vi ho disperso. Oracolo del Signore. Vi ricondurrò nel luogo da dove vi ho fatto deportare.	14 I shal let you find me (Yahweh declares. I shal restore your fortunes and gather you in from al thenations and wherever I have driven you, Yahweh declares. I shal bring you back to the place from which I exiledyou).
15 Voi dite: “Il Signore ci ha suscitato profeti a Babilonia”.	15 'Since you say: Yahweh has raised up prophets for us in Babylon-
16 Ebbene, così dice il Signore al re che siede sul trono di Davide e a tutto il popolo che abita in questa città, ai vostri fratelli che non sono partiti con voi nella deportazione:	16 this is what Yahweh says about the king now occupying the throne of David and all the people living inthis city, your brothers who did not go with you into exile:
17 Così dice il Signore degli eserciti: Ecco, manderò contro di loro la spada, la fame e la peste e li renderò come i fichi guasti, che non si possono mangiare tanto sono cattivi.	17 Yahweh Sabaoth says this: I am now going to send them sword, famine and plague; I shal makethem like rotten figs, so bad as to be uneatable.
18 Li perseguiterò con la spada, la fame e la peste; li renderò un esempio terrificante per tutti i regni della terra, e maledizione, stupore, scherno e obbrobrio in tutte le nazioni nelle quali li ho dispersi,	18 I shal pursue them with sword, famine and plague. I shall make them an object of terror to al thekingdoms of the earth, a curse, a thing of horror, scorn and derision to al the nations where I have driven them,
19 perché non hanno ascoltato le mie parole – oracolo del Signore – quando con assidua premura mandavo loro i miei servi, i profeti, ed essi non hanno ascoltato. Oracolo del Signore.	19 because they have refused to listen to my words, Yahweh declares, although I have persistently sentthem al my servants the prophets; but they would not listen, Yahweh declares.
20 Voi però, deportati tutti, che ho mandato da Gerusalemme a Babilonia, ascoltate la parola del Signore.	20 But al you exiles, whom I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon, listen to Yahweh's word!
21 Così dice il Signore degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele, riguardo ad Acab, figlio di Kolaià, e a Sedecìa, figlio di Maasia, che vi profetizzano menzogne nel mio nome: Ecco, li darò in mano a Nabucodònosor, re di Babilonia, che li ucciderà sotto i vostri occhi.	21 'This is what Yahweh Sabaoth, God of Israel, says about Ahab son of Kolaiah, and Zedekiah son ofMaaseiah, who prophesy lies to you in my name: I shal hand them over now to Nebuchadnezzar king ofBabylon who wil put them to death before your very eyes.
22 E se ne trarrà una formula di maledizione che si diffonderà presso tutti i deportati di Giuda a Babilonia; si dirà: “Ti tratti il Signore come Sedecìa e Acab, che il re di Babilonia fece arrostire sul fuoco!”.	22 This curse, based on their fate, wil be used by al the exiles of Judah in Babylon: May Yahweh treatyou like Zedekiah and Ahab, roasted alive by the king of Babylon,
23 Poiché essi hanno operato cose nefande a Gerusalemme, hanno commesso adulterio con le mogli del prossimo, hanno proferito nel mio nome parole menzognere senza che io avessi dato loro alcun ordine. Io stesso lo so bene e ne sono testimone. Oracolo del Signore.	23 because they have done a scandalous thing in Israel, committing adultery with their neighbour's wivesand speaking lying words in my name without orders from me. I know al the same and am witness to it, Yahwehdeclares.'
24 E dirai a Semaià, il Nechelamita:	24 'And to Shemaiah of Nehelam you wil speak as fol ows:
25 Così dice il Signore degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele: Hai mandato nel tuo nome lettere a tutto il popolo di Gerusalemme e a Sofonia, figlio di Maasia, il sacerdote, e a tutti i sacerdoti, dicendo:	25 Yahweh Sabaoth, God of Israel, says this: Since you, on your own initiative, have sent a letter to allthe people in Jerusalem, to the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah (and to al the priests), saying:
26 “Il Signore ti ha costituito sacerdote al posto del sacerdote Ioiadà, perché fossi sovrintendente nel tempio del Signore, per reprimere qualunque forsennato che fa il profeta, ponendolo in ceppi e in catene:	26 Yahweh has appointed you priest in place of the priest Jehoiada to keep order in the Temple ofYahweh, to put any crazy fel ow posing as a prophet in the stocks and col ar,
27 orbene, perché non reprimi Geremia di Anatòt, che fa profezie fra di voi?	27 why then have you not disciplined Jeremiah of Anathoth, now posing as a prophet to you?
28 Infatti egli ci ha mandato a dire a Babilonia: Durerà a lungo la vostra situazione! Costruite case e abitatele, piantate orti e mangiatene i frutti!”».	28 Why, he has even sent us a message in Babylon, saying: It wil be a long time. Build houses, settledown; plant gardens and eat what they produce.'. . .
29 Il sacerdote Sofonia lesse questa lettera in presenza del profeta Geremia.	29 (Now, after the priest Zephaniah had read this letter to the prophet Jeremiah),
30 Allora la parola del Signore fu rivolta a Geremia:	30 the word of Yahweh came then to Jeremiah as fol ows,
31 «Invia questo messaggio a tutti i deportati: Così dice il Signore riguardo a Semaià, il Nechelamita: Poiché Semaià ha parlato a voi come profeta mentre io non l’avevo mandato e vi ha fatto confidare nella menzogna,	31 'Send this message to al the exiles, "This is what Yahweh says about Shemaiah of Nehelam: SinceShemaiah has prophesied to you without my sending him, and since he has caused you to rely on what is false
32 per questo dice il Signore: Ecco, punirò Semaià, il Nechelamita, e la sua discendenza; nessuno dei suoi dimorerà in mezzo a questo popolo, né vedrà il bene che farò al mio popolo – oracolo del Signore –, perché ha predicato la ribellione al Signore».	32 for that reason, Yahweh declares, I shal punish Shemaiah of Nehelam and his descendants; no malemember of his family wil survive among this people to see the happiness that I wil bestow on my people(Yahweh declares, since he has preached rebel ion against Yahweh)." '
