1 Onora il medico per le sue prestazioni, perché il Signore ha creato anche lui.	1 Hold the physician in honor, for he is essential to you, and God it was who established his profession.
2 Dall’Altissimo infatti viene la guarigione, e anche dal re egli riceve doni.	2 From God the doctor has his wisdom, and the king provides for his sustenance.
3 La scienza del medico lo fa procedere a testa alta, egli è ammirato anche tra i grandi.	3 His knowledge makes the doctor distinguished, and gives him access to those in authority.
4 Il Signore ha creato medicamenti dalla terra, l’uomo assennato non li disprezza.	4 God makes the earth yield healing herbs which the prudent man should not neglect;
5 L’acqua non fu resa dolce per mezzo di un legno, per far conoscere la potenza di lui?	5 Was not the water sweetened by a twig that men might learn his power?
6 Ed egli ha dato agli uomini la scienza perché fosse glorificato nelle sue meraviglie.	6 He endows men with the knowledge to glory in his mighty works,
7 Con esse il medico cura e toglie il dolore,	7 Through which the doctor eases pain and the druggist prepares his medicines;
8 con queste il farmacista prepara le misture. Certo non verranno meno le opere del Signore; da lui proviene il benessere sulla terra.	8 Thus God's creative work continues without cease in its efficacy on the surface of the earth.
9 Figlio, non trascurarti nella malattia, ma prega il Signore ed egli ti guarirà.	9 My son, when you are ill, delay not, but pray to God, who will heal you:
10 Allontana l’errore, regola le tue mani, purifica il cuore da ogni peccato.	10 Flee wickedness; let your hands be just, cleanse your heart of every sin;
11 Offri l’incenso e un memoriale di fior di farina e sacrifici pingui secondo le tue possibilità.	11 Offer your sweet-smelling oblation and petition, a rich offering according to your means.
12 Poi ricorri pure al medico, perché il Signore ha creato anche lui: non stia lontano da te, poiché c’è bisogno di lui.	12 Then give the doctor his place lest he leave; for you need him too.
13 Ci sono casi in cui il successo è nelle loro mani;	13 There are times that give him an advantage,
14 anch’essi infatti pregano il Signore perché conceda loro di dare sollievo e guarigione per salvare la vita.	14 and he too beseeches God That his diagnosis may be correct and his treatment bring about a cure.
15 Chi pecca contro il proprio creatore cada nelle mani del medico.	15 He who is a sinner toward his Maker will be defiant toward the doctor.
16 Figlio, versa lacrime sul morto, e come uno che soffre profondamente inizia il lamento; poi seppelliscine il corpo secondo le sue volontà e non trascurare la sua tomba.	16 My son, shed tears for one who is dead with wailing and bitter lament; As is only proper, prepare the body, absent not yourself from his burial:
17 Piangi amaramente e alza il tuo caldo lamento, il lutto sia proporzionato alla sua dignità, un giorno o due per evitare maldicenze, poi consólati del tuo dolore.	17 Weeping bitterly, mourning fully, pay your tribute of sorrow, as he deserves,
18 Infatti dal dolore esce la morte, il dolore del cuore logora la forza.	18 One or two days, to prevent gossip; then compose yourself after your grief,
19 Nella disgrazia resta il dolore, una vita da povero è maledizione del cuore.	19 For grief can bring on an extremity and heartache destroy one's health.
20 Non abbandonare il tuo cuore al dolore, scaccialo ricordando la tua fine.	20 Turn not your thoughts to him again; cease to recall him; think rather of the end.
21 Non dimenticare che non c’è ritorno; a lui non gioverai e farai del male a te stesso.	21 Recall him not, for there is no hope of his return; it will not help him, but will do you harm.
22 Ricòrdati della mia sorte, che sarà anche la tua: ieri a me e oggi a te.	22 Remember that his fate will also be yours; for him it was yesterday, for you today.
23 Nel riposo del morto lascia riposare anche il suo ricordo; consólati di lui, ora che il suo spirito è partito.	23 With the departed dead, let memory fade; rally your courage, once the soul has left.
24 La sapienza dello scriba sta nel piacere del tempo libero, chi si dedica poco all’attività pratica diventerà saggio.	24 The scribe's profession increases his wisdom; whoever is free from toil can become a wise man.
25 Come potrà divenire saggio chi maneggia l’aratro e si vanta di brandire un pungolo, spinge innanzi i buoi e si occupa del loro lavoro e parla solo di vitelli?	25 How can he become learned who guides the plow, who thrills in wielding the goad like a lance, Who guides the ox and urges on the bullock, and whose every concern is for cattle?
26 Dedica il suo cuore a tracciare solchi e non dorme per dare il foraggio alle giovenche.	26 His care is for plowing furrows, and he keeps a watch on the beasts in the stalls.
27 Così ogni artigiano e costruttore che passa la notte come il giorno: quelli che incidono immagini per sigilli e con pazienza cercano di variare le figure, dedicano il cuore a riprodurre bene il disegno e stanno svegli per terminare il lavoro.	27 So with every engraver and designer who, laboring night and day, Fashions carved seals, and whose concern is to vary the pattern. His care is to produce a vivid impression, and he keeps watch till he finishes his design.
28 Così il fabbro che siede vicino all’incudine ed è intento al lavoro del ferro: la vampa del fuoco gli strugge le carni, e col calore della fornace deve lottare; il rumore del martello gli assorda gli orecchi, i suoi occhi sono fissi sul modello di un oggetto, dedica il suo cuore a finire il lavoro e sta sveglio per rifinirlo alla perfezione.	28 So with the smith standing near his anvil, forging crude iron. The heat from the fire sears his flesh, yet he toils away in the furnace heat. The clang of the hammer deafens his ears, His eyes are fixed on the tool he is shaping. His care is to finish his work, and he keeps watch till he perfects it in detail.
29 Così il vasaio che è seduto al suo lavoro e con i suoi piedi gira la ruota, è sempre in ansia per il suo lavoro, si affatica a produrre in gran quantità.	29 So with the potter sitting at his labor, revolving the wheel with his feet. He is always concerned for his products, and turns them out in quantity.
30 Con il braccio imprime una forma all’argilla, mentre con i piedi ne piega la resistenza; dedica il suo cuore a una verniciatura perfetta e sta sveglio per pulire la fornace.	30 With his hands he molds the clay, and with his feet softens it. His care is for proper coloring, and he keeps watch on the fire of his kiln.
31 Tutti costoro confidano nelle proprie mani, e ognuno è abile nel proprio mestiere.	31 All these men are skilled with their hands, each one an expert at his own task;
32 Senza di loro non si costruisce una città, nessuno potrebbe soggiornarvi o circolarvi. Ma essi non sono ricercati per il consiglio del popolo,	32 Without them no city could be lived in, and wherever they stay, they need not hunger.
33 nell’assemblea non hanno un posto speciale, non siedono sul seggio del giudice e non conoscono le disposizioni della legge. Non fanno brillare né l’istruzione né il diritto, non compaiono tra gli autori di proverbi,	33 They do not occupy the judge's bench, nor are they prominent in the assembly; They set forth no decisions or judgments, nor are they found among the rulers;
34 ma essi consolidano la costruzione del mondo, e il mestiere che fanno è la loro preghiera. Differente è il caso di chi si applica a meditare la legge dell’Altissimo.	34 Yet they maintain God's ancient handiwork, and their concern is for exercise of their skill.
