BIBBIA CEI 2008	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Diede poi quest’ordine al suo maggiordomo: «Riempi i sacchi di quegli uomini di tanti viveri quanti ne possono contenere e rimetti il denaro di ciascuno alla bocca del suo sacco.	1 Then Joseph instructed his chamberlain as follows: 'Fil these men's sacks with as much food as theycan carry, and put each man's money in the mouth of his sack.
2 Metterai la mia coppa, la coppa d’argento, alla bocca del sacco del più giovane, insieme con il denaro del suo grano». Quello fece secondo l’ordine di Giuseppe.	2 And put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one's sack as wel as the money for hisrations.' He did as Joseph had instructed.
3 Alle prime luci del mattino quegli uomini furono fatti partire con i loro asini.	3 At daybreak, the men were sent off with their donkeys.
4 Erano appena usciti dalla città e ancora non si erano allontanati, quando Giuseppe disse al suo maggiordomo: «Su, insegui quegli uomini, raggiungili e di’ loro: “Perché avete reso male per bene?	4 They had gone only a little way from the city, when Joseph said to his chamberlain, 'Away now andfol ow those men. When you catch up with them, say to them, "Why have you repaid good with evil?
5 Non è forse questa la coppa in cui beve il mio signore e per mezzo della quale egli suole trarre i presagi? Avete fatto male a fare così”».	5 Is this not what my lord uses for drinking and also for reading omens? What you have done is wrong."'
6 Egli li raggiunse e ripeté loro queste parole.	6 So when he caught up with them he repeated these words.
7 Quelli gli risposero: «Perché il mio signore dice questo? Lontano dai tuoi servi il fare una cosa simile!	7 They asked him, 'What does my lord mean? Your servants would never think of doing such a thing.
8 Ecco, se ti abbiamo riportato dalla terra di Canaan il denaro che abbiamo trovato alla bocca dei nostri sacchi, come avremmo potuto rubare argento o oro dalla casa del tuo padrone?	8 Look, we brought you back the money we found in the mouths of our sacks, al the way from Canaan.Are we likely to have stolen silver or gold from your master's house?
9 Quello dei tuoi servi, presso il quale si troverà, sia messo a morte e anche noi diventeremo schiavi del mio signore».	9 Whichever of your servants is found to have it shall die, and the rest of us shal be slaves of my lord.'
10 Rispose: «Ebbene, come avete detto, così sarà: colui, presso il quale si troverà la coppa, diventerà mio schiavo e voi sarete innocenti».	10 'Very wel , then, it shal be as you say,' he replied, 'the one on whom it is found shall become myslave, but the rest of you can go free.'
11 Ciascuno si affrettò a scaricare a terra il suo sacco e lo aprì.	11 Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground, and each opened his own.
12 Quegli li frugò cominciando dal maggiore e finendo con il più piccolo, e la coppa fu trovata nel sacco di Beniamino.	12 He searched, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest, and found the cup inBenjamin's sack.
13 Allora essi si stracciarono le vesti, ricaricarono ciascuno il proprio asino e tornarono in città.	13 Then they tore their clothes, and when each man had reloaded his donkey they returned to the city.
14 Giuda e i suoi fratelli vennero nella casa di Giuseppe, che si trovava ancora là, e si gettarono a terra davanti a lui.	14 When Judah and his brothers arrived at Joseph's house he was still there, so they fell on the groundin front of him.
15 Giuseppe disse loro: «Che azione avete commesso? Non vi rendete conto che un uomo come me è capace di indovinare?».	15 'What do you mean by doing this?' Joseph asked them. 'Did you not know that a man such as I am isa reader of omens?'
16 Giuda disse: «Che diremo al mio signore? Come parlare? Come giustificarci? Dio stesso ha scoperto la colpa dei tuoi servi! Eccoci schiavi del mio signore, noi e colui che è stato trovato in possesso della coppa».	16 'What can we answer my lord?' Judah replied. 'What can we say? How can we clear ourselves? Godhimself has uncovered your servants' guilt. Here we are then, my lord's slaves, we no less than the one in whose possession the cup was found.'
17 Ma egli rispose: «Lontano da me fare una cosa simile! L’uomo trovato in possesso della coppa, quello sarà mio schiavo: quanto a voi, tornate in pace da vostro padre».	17 'I could not think of doing such a thing,' he replied. 'The man in whose possession the cup was foundshall be my slave, but you can go back unhindered to your father.'
18 Allora Giuda gli si fece innanzi e disse: «Perdona, mio signore, sia permesso al tuo servo di far sentire una parola agli orecchi del mio signore; non si accenda la tua ira contro il tuo servo, perché uno come te è pari al faraone!	18 At this, Judah went up to him and said, 'May it please my lord, let your servant have a word privatelywith my lord. Do not be angry with your servant, for you are like Pharaoh himself.
19 Il mio signore aveva interrogato i suoi servi: “Avete ancora un padre o un fratello?”.	19 My lord questioned his servants, "Have you father or brother?"
20 E noi avevamo risposto al mio signore: “Abbiamo un padre vecchio e un figlio ancora giovane natogli in vecchiaia, il fratello che aveva è morto ed egli è rimasto l’unico figlio di quella madre e suo padre lo ama”.	20 And we said to my lord, "We have an old father, and a younger brother born of his old age. Hisbrother is dead, so he is the only one by that mother now left, and his father loves him."
21 Tu avevi detto ai tuoi servi: “Conducetelo qui da me, perché possa vederlo con i miei occhi”.	21 Then you said to your servants, "Bring him down to me, so that I can set eyes on him."
22 Noi avevamo risposto al mio signore: “Il giovinetto non può abbandonare suo padre: se lascerà suo padre, questi ne morirà”.	22 We replied to my lord, "The boy cannot leave his father. If he leaves him, his father will die."
23 Ma tu avevi ingiunto ai tuoi servi: “Se il vostro fratello minore non verrà qui con voi, non potrete più venire alla mia presenza”.	23 But you said to your servants, "If your youngest brother does not come down with you, you wil notbe admitted to my presence again."
24 Fatto ritorno dal tuo servo, mio padre, gli riferimmo le parole del mio signore.	24 When we went back to your servant my father, we repeated to him what my lord had said.
25 E nostro padre disse: “Tornate ad acquistare per noi un po’ di viveri”.	25 So when our father said, "Go back and get us a little food,"
26 E noi rispondemmo: “Non possiamo ritornare laggiù: solo se verrà con noi il nostro fratello minore, andremo; non saremmo ammessi alla presenza di quell’uomo senza avere con noi il nostro fratello minore”.	26 we said, "We cannot go down. We shall go only if our youngest brother is with us for, unless ouryoungest brother is with us, we shal not be admitted to the man's presence."
27 Allora il tuo servo, mio padre, ci disse: “Voi sapete che due figli mi aveva procreato mia moglie.	27 So your servant our father said to us, "You know that my wife bore me two children.
28 Uno partì da me e dissi: certo è stato sbranato! Da allora non l’ho più visto.	28 When one of them left me, I supposed that he must have been torn to pieces, and I have never seenhim since.
29 Se ora mi porterete via anche questo e gli capitasse una disgrazia, voi fareste scendere con dolore la mia canizie negli inferi”.	29 If you take this one from me too and any harm comes to him, you wil send my white head down toSheol with grief."
30 Ora, se io arrivassi dal tuo servo, mio padre, e il giovinetto non fosse con noi, poiché la vita dell’uno è legata alla vita dell’altro,	30 If I go to your servant my father now, and we do not have the boy with us, he will die as soon as hesees that the boy is not with us, for his heart is bound up with him;
31 non appena egli vedesse che il giovinetto non è con noi, morirebbe, e i tuoi servi avrebbero fatto scendere con dolore negli inferi la canizie del tuo servo, nostro padre.	31 and your servants will have sent your servant our father's white head down to Sheol with grief.
32 Ma il tuo servo si è reso garante del giovinetto presso mio padre dicendogli: “Se non te lo ricondurrò, sarò colpevole verso mio padre per tutta la vita”.	32 Now your servant went surety to my father for the boy. I said: "If I do not bring him back to you, letme bear the blame before my father al my life."
33 Ora, lascia che il tuo servo rimanga al posto del giovinetto come schiavo del mio signore e il giovinetto torni lassù con i suoi fratelli!	33 Let your servant stay, then, as my lord's slave in place of the boy, I implore you, and let the boy goback with his brothers.
34 Perché, come potrei tornare da mio padre senza avere con me il giovinetto? Che io non veda il male che colpirebbe mio padre!».	34 How indeed could I go back to my father and not have the boy with me? I could not bear to see themisery that would overwhelm my father.'
