1 Due anni dopo, il faraone sognò di trovarsi presso il Nilo.	1 After two years, Pharaoh saw a dream. He thought himself to be standing above a river,
2 Ed ecco, salirono dal Nilo sette vacche, belle di aspetto e grasse, e si misero a pascolare tra i giunchi.	2 from which ascended seven cows, exceedingly beautiful and stout. And they pastured in marshy places.
3 Ed ecco, dopo quelle, salirono dal Nilo altre sette vacche, brutte di aspetto e magre, e si fermarono accanto alle prime vacche sulla riva del Nilo.	3 Likewise, another seven emerged from the river, filthy and thoroughly emaciated. And they pastured on the same bank of the river, in green places.
4 Le vacche brutte di aspetto e magre divorarono le sette vacche belle di aspetto e grasse. E il faraone si svegliò.	4 And they devoured those whose appearance and condition of body was so wonderful. Pharaoh, having been awakened,
5 Poi si addormentò e sognò una seconda volta: ecco, sette spighe spuntavano da un unico stelo, grosse e belle.	5 slept again, and he saw another dream. Seven ears of grain sprung up on one stalk, full and well-formed.
6 Ma, dopo quelle, ecco spuntare altre sette spighe vuote e arse dal vento d’oriente.	6 Likewise, other ears of grain, of the same number, rose up, thin and struck with blight,
7 Le spighe vuote inghiottirono le sette spighe grosse e piene. Il faraone si svegliò: era stato un sogno.	7 devouring all the beauty of the first. Pharaoh, when he awakened after his rest,
8 Alla mattina il suo spirito ne era turbato, perciò convocò tutti gli indovini e tutti i saggi dell’Egitto. Il faraone raccontò loro il sogno, ma nessuno sapeva interpretarlo al faraone.	8 and when morning arrived, being terrified with fear, sent to all the interpreters of Egypt and to all of the wise men. And when they were summoned, he explained to them his dream; but there was no one who could interpret it.
9 Allora il capo dei coppieri parlò al faraone: «Io devo ricordare oggi le mie colpe.	9 Then at last the chief cupbearer, remembering, said, “I confess my sin.
10 Il faraone si era adirato contro i suoi servi e li aveva messi in carcere nella casa del capo delle guardie, sia me sia il capo dei panettieri.	10 The king, being angry with his servants, ordered me and the chief miller of grain to be forced into the prison of the leader of the military.
11 Noi facemmo un sogno nella stessa notte, io e lui; ma avemmo ciascuno un sogno con un proprio significato.	11 There, in one night, both of us saw a dream presaging the future.
12 C’era là con noi un giovane ebreo, schiavo del capo delle guardie; noi gli raccontammo i nostri sogni ed egli ce li interpretò, dando a ciascuno l’interpretazione del suo sogno.	12 In that place, there was a Hebrew, a servant of the same commander of the military, to whom we explained our dreams.
13 E come egli ci aveva interpretato, così avvenne: io fui reintegrato nella mia carica e l’altro fu impiccato».	13 Whatever we heard was proven afterwards by the event of the matter. For I was restored to my office, and he was suspended on a cross.”
14 Allora il faraone convocò Giuseppe. Lo fecero uscire in fretta dal sotterraneo; egli si rase, si cambiò gli abiti e si presentò al faraone.	14 Immediately, by the king’s authority, Joseph was led out of prison, and they shaved him. And changing his apparel, they presented him to him.
15 Il faraone disse a Giuseppe: «Ho fatto un sogno e nessuno sa interpretarlo; ora io ho sentito dire di te che ti basta ascoltare un sogno per interpretarlo subito».	15 And he said to him, “I have seen dreams, and there is no one who can unfold them. I have heard that you are very wise at interpreting these.”
16 Giuseppe rispose al faraone: «Non io, ma Dio darà la risposta per la salute del faraone!».	16 Joseph responded, “Apart from me, God will respond favorably to Pharaoh.”
17 Allora il faraone raccontò a Giuseppe: «Nel mio sogno io mi trovavo sulla riva del Nilo.	17 Therefore, Pharaoh explained what he had seen: “I thought myself to be standing on the bank of a river,
18 Ed ecco, salirono dal Nilo sette vacche grasse e belle di forma e si misero a pascolare tra i giunchi.	18 and seven cows climbed up from the river, exceedingly beautiful and full of flesh. And they grazed in a pasture of a marshy greenery.
19 E, dopo quelle, ecco salire altre sette vacche deboli, molto brutte di forma e magre; non ne vidi mai di così brutte in tutta la terra d’Egitto.	19 And behold, there followed after these, another seven cows, with such deformity and emaciation as I had never seen in the land of Egypt.
20 Le vacche magre e brutte divorarono le prime sette vacche, quelle grasse.	20 These devoured and consumed the first,
21 Queste entrarono nel loro ventre, ma non ci si accorgeva che vi fossero entrate, perché il loro aspetto era brutto come prima. E mi svegliai.	21 giving no indication of being full. But they remained in the same state of emaciation and squalor. Awakening, but being weighed down into sleep again,
22 Poi vidi nel sogno spuntare da un unico stelo sette spighe, piene e belle.	22 I saw a dream. Seven ears of grain sprang up on one stalk, full and very beautiful.
23 Ma ecco, dopo quelle, spuntavano sette spighe secche, vuote e arse dal vento d’oriente.	23 Likewise, another seven, thin and struck with blight, rose up from the stalk.
24 Le spighe vuote inghiottirono le sette spighe belle. Ho riferito il sogno agli indovini, ma nessuno sa darmene la spiegazione».	24 And they devoured the beauty of the first. I explained this dream to the interpreters, and there is no one who can unfold it.”
25 Allora Giuseppe disse al faraone: «Il sogno del faraone è uno solo: Dio ha indicato al faraone quello che sta per fare.	25 Joseph responded: “The dream of the king is one. What God will do, he has revealed to Pharaoh.
26 Le sette vacche belle rappresentano sette anni e le sette spighe belle rappresentano sette anni: si tratta di un unico sogno.	26 The seven beautiful cows, and the seven full ears of grain, are seven years of abundance. And so the force of the dreams is understood to be the same.
27 Le sette vacche magre e brutte, che salgono dopo quelle, rappresentano sette anni e le sette spighe vuote, arse dal vento d’oriente, rappresentano sette anni: verranno sette anni di carestia.	27 Likewise, the seven thin and emaciated cows, which ascended after them, and the seven thin ears of grain, which were struck with the burning wind, are seven approaching years of famine.
28 È appunto quel che ho detto al faraone: Dio ha manifestato al faraone quanto sta per fare.	28 These will be fulfilled in this order.
29 Ecco, stanno per venire sette anni in cui ci sarà grande abbondanza in tutta la terra d’Egitto.	29 Behold, there will arrive seven years of great fertility throughout the entire land of Egypt.
30 A questi succederanno sette anni di carestia; si dimenticherà tutta quell’abbondanza nella terra d’Egitto e la carestia consumerà la terra.	30 After this, there will follow another seven years, of such great barrenness that all the former abundance will be delivered into oblivion. For the famine will consume all the land,
31 Non vi sarà più alcuna traccia dell’abbondanza che vi era stata nella terra, a causa della carestia successiva, perché sarà molto dura.	31 and the greatness of this destitution will cause the greatness of the abundance to be lost.
32 Quanto al fatto che il sogno del faraone si è ripetuto due volte, significa che la cosa è decisa da Dio e che Dio si affretta a eseguirla.	32 Now, as to what you saw the second time, it is a dream pertaining to the same thing. It is an indication of its firmness, because the word of God shall be done, and it shall be completed swiftly.
33 Il faraone pensi a trovare un uomo intelligente e saggio e lo metta a capo della terra d’Egitto.	33 Now therefore, let the king provide a wise and industrious man, and place him over the land of Egypt,
34 Il faraone inoltre proceda a istituire commissari sul territorio, per prelevare un quinto sui prodotti della terra d’Egitto durante i sette anni di abbondanza.	34 so that he may appoint overseers throughout all the regions. And let a fifth part of the fruits, throughout the seven fertile years
35 Essi raccoglieranno tutti i viveri di queste annate buone che stanno per venire, ammasseranno il grano sotto l’autorità del faraone e lo terranno in deposito nelle città.	35 that now have already begun to occur, be gathered into storehouses. And let all the grain be stored away, under the power of Pharaoh, and let it be kept in the cities.
36 Questi viveri serviranno di riserva al paese per i sette anni di carestia che verranno nella terra d’Egitto; così il paese non sarà distrutto dalla carestia».	36 And let it be prepared for the future famine of seven years, which will oppress Egypt, and then the land will not be consumed by destitution.”
37 La proposta piacque al faraone e a tutti i suoi ministri.	37 The counsel pleased Pharaoh and all his ministers.
38 Il faraone disse ai ministri: «Potremo trovare un uomo come questo, in cui sia lo spirito di Dio?».	38 And he said to them, “Would we be able to find another such man, who is full of the Spirit of God?”
39 E il faraone disse a Giuseppe: «Dal momento che Dio ti ha manifestato tutto questo, non c’è nessuno intelligente e saggio come te.	39 Therefore, he said to Joseph: “Because God has revealed to you all that you have said, would I be able to find anyone wiser and as much like you?
40 Tu stesso sarai il mio governatore e ai tuoi ordini si schiererà tutto il mio popolo: solo per il trono io sarò più grande di te».	40 You will be over my house, and to the authority of your mouth, all the people will show obedience. Only in one way, in the throne of the kingdom, will I go before you.”
41 Il faraone disse a Giuseppe: «Ecco, io ti metto a capo di tutta la terra d’Egitto».	41 And again, Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Behold, I have appointed you over the entire land of Egypt.”
42 Il faraone si tolse di mano l’anello e lo pose sulla mano di Giuseppe; lo rivestì di abiti di lino finissimo e gli pose al collo un monile d’oro.	42 And he took the ring from his own hand, and he gave it into his hand. And he clothed him with a robe of fine linen, and he placed a necklace of gold around his neck.
43 Lo fece salire sul suo secondo carro e davanti a lui si gridava: «Abrech». E così lo si stabilì su tutta la terra d’Egitto.	43 And he caused him to ascend upon his second swift chariot, with the herald proclaiming that everyone should bend their knee before him, and that they should know that he was governor over the entire land of Egypt.
44 Poi il faraone disse a Giuseppe: «Io sono il faraone, ma senza il tuo permesso nessuno potrà alzare la mano o il piede in tutta la terra d’Egitto».	44 Likewise, the king said to Joseph: “I am Pharaoh: apart from your authority, no one will move hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.”
45 E il faraone chiamò Giuseppe Safnat-Panèach e gli diede in moglie Asenat, figlia di Potifera, sacerdote di Eliòpoli. Giuseppe partì per visitare l’Egitto.	45 And he changed his name and called him, in the Egyptian tongue: ‘Savior of the world.’ And he gave him as a wife, Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis. And so Joseph went out into the land of Egypt.
46 Giuseppe aveva trent’anni quando entrò al servizio del faraone, re d’Egitto. Quindi Giuseppe si allontanò dal faraone e percorse tutta la terra d’Egitto.	46 (Now he was thirty years old when he stood in the sight of king Pharaoh.) And he traveled throughout the regions of Egypt.
47 Durante i sette anni di abbondanza la terra produsse a profusione.	47 And the fertility of the seven years arrived. And when the grain fields were reduced to sheaves, these were gathered into the storehouses of Egypt.
48 Egli raccolse tutti i viveri dei sette anni di abbondanza che vennero nella terra d’Egitto, e ripose i viveri nelle città: in ogni città i viveri della campagna circostante.	48 And now all the abundance of grain was stored away in every city.
49 Giuseppe ammassò il grano come la sabbia del mare, in grandissima quantità, così che non se ne fece più il computo, perché era incalcolabile.	49 And there was such a great abundance of wheat that it was comparable to the sands of the sea, and its bounty exceeded all measure.
50 Intanto, prima che venisse l’anno della carestia, nacquero a Giuseppe due figli, partoriti a lui da Asenat, figlia di Potifera, sacerdote di Eliòpoli.	50 Then, before the famine arrived, Joseph had two sons born, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis, bore for him.
51 Giuseppe chiamò il primogenito Manasse, «perché – disse – Dio mi ha fatto dimenticare ogni affanno e tutta la casa di mio padre».	51 And he called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, saying, “God has caused me to forget all my labors and the house of my father.”
52 E il secondo lo chiamò Èfraim, «perché – disse – Dio mi ha reso fecondo nella terra della mia afflizione».	52 Likewise, he named the second Ephraim, saying, “God has caused me to increase in the land of my poverty.”
53 Finirono i sette anni di abbondanza nella terra d’Egitto	53 And so, when the seven years of fertility that occurred in Egypt had passed,
54 e cominciarono i sette anni di carestia, come aveva detto Giuseppe. Ci fu carestia in ogni paese, ma in tutta la terra d’Egitto c’era il pane.	54 the seven years of destitution, which Joseph had predicted, began to arrive. And the famine prevailed throughout the whole world, but there was bread in all the land of Egypt.
55 Poi anche tutta la terra d’Egitto cominciò a sentire la fame e il popolo gridò al faraone per avere il pane. Il faraone disse a tutti gli Egiziani: «Andate da Giuseppe; fate quello che vi dirà».	55 And being hungry, the people cried out to Pharaoh, asking for provisions. And he said to them: “Go to Joseph. And do whatever he will tell you.”
56 La carestia imperversava su tutta la terra. Allora Giuseppe aprì tutti i depositi in cui vi era grano e lo vendette agli Egiziani. La carestia si aggravava in Egitto,	56 Then the famine increased daily in all the land. And Joseph opened all of the storehouses and sold to the Egyptians. For the famine had oppressed them also.
57 ma da ogni paese venivano in Egitto per acquistare grano da Giuseppe, perché la carestia infieriva su tutta la terra.	57 And all the provinces came to Egypt, to buy food and to temper the misfortune of their destitution.
