| 2 I Filistei presero l’arca di Dio, la introdussero nel tempio di Dagon e la posero presso Dagon. | 2 then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it into the house of Dagon and set it up beside Dagon. |
| 3 Il giorno dopo, gli abitanti di Ashdod si alzarono, ed ecco Dagon era prostrato, faccia a terra, innanzi all’arca di Jahvè. Risollevato Dagon, lo ricollocarono al suo posto. | 3 And when the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the LORD. So they took Dagon and put him back in his place. |
| 4 Si alzarono presto il giorno dopo, ed ecco Dagon era prostrato, faccia a terra, innanzi all’arca di Jahvè. Anzi, la testa di Dagon e le mani, staccate, erano sulla soglia; di lui rimaneva intatto soltanto il tronco. | 4 But when they rose early on the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the LORD, and the head of Dagon and both his hands were lying cut off upon the threshold; only the trunk of Dagon was left to him. |
| 5 In seguito, fino a oggi, i sacerdoti di Dagon e tutti coloro che entrano nel tempio di Dagon non pestano mai la soglia di Dagon in Ashdod. | 5 This is why the priests of Dagon and all who enter the house of Dagon do not tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day. |
| 6 Inoltre, la mano di Jahvè gravò sugli abitanti di Ashdod così da menarne strage: colpì di bubboni Ashdod e le sue dipendenze. | 6 The hand of the LORD was heavy upon the people of Ashdod, and he terrified and afflicted them with tumors, both Ashdod and its territory. |
| 7 Poiché le cose prendevano una tale piega, gli uomini di Ashdod si dissero: «Non rimanga l’arca del Dio di Israele più oltre, qui, da noi! Ha trattato troppo duramente noi e Dagon nostro dio!» | 7 And when the men of Ashdod saw how things were, they said, "The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us; for his hand is heavy upon us and upon Dagon our god." |
| 8 Allora fecero radunare presso di loro tutti i principi dei Filistei e dissero: «Che dobbiamo fare dell’arca del Dio di Israele?» Fu risposto: «L’arca del Dio di Israele sia portata a Gat». E l’arca del Dio di Israele fu portata a Gat. | 8 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, "What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?" They answered, "Let the ark of the God of Israel be brought around to Gath." So they brought the ark of the God of Israel there. |
| 9 Allora, come l’ebbero portata, la mano di Jahvè fu sulla città, incutendo grandissimo terrore, poiché colpì gli abitanti della città, piccoli e grandi, e provocò in loro bubboni. | 9 But after they had brought it around, the hand of the LORD was against the city, causing a very great panic, and he afflicted the men of the city, both young and old, so that tumors broke out upon them. |
| 10 Allora spedirono l’arca di Dio a Ekron. Ed ecco, quando l’arca di Dio giunse a Ekron, gli abitanti di Ekron mandarono grida di protesta: «Hanno portato da me l’arca del Dio di Israele per far morire me e il mio popolo!» | 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. But when the ark of God came to Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, "They have brought around to us the ark of the God of Israel to slay us and our people." |
| 11 Fecero perciò radunare tutti i principi dei Filistei e dissero: «Mandate via l’arca del Dio di Israele: ritorni a casa sua! Non voglio che faccia morire me e il mio popolo!» Si era infatti prodotto un terrore mortale in tutta la città; la mano di Dio aveva gravato molto; | 11 They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, "Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it return to its own place, that it may not slay us and our people." For there was a deathly panic throughout the whole city. The hand of God was very heavy there; |
| 12 gli uomini che non erano morti erano colpiti da bubboni, le grida della città salivano al cielo. | 12 the men who did not die were stricken with tumors, and the cry of the city went up to heaven. |
