1 Auch das sind Sprichwörter Salomos, die die Männer Hiskijas, des Königs von Juda, sammelten.	1 These also are proverbs of Solomon. The men of Hezekiah, king of Judah, transmitted them.
2 Gottes Ehre ist es, eine Sache zu verhüllen, des Königs Ehre ist es, eine Sache zu erforschen.	2 God has glory in what he conceals, kings have glory in what they fathom.
3 Der Himmel so hoch und die Erde so tief und das Herz des Königs: sie sind nicht zu erforschen.	3 As the heavens in height, and the earth in depth, the heart of kings is unfathomable.
4 Scheidet man die Schlacken vom Silber, gelingt dem Feinschmied das Gefäß.	4 Remove the dross from silver, and it comes forth perfectly purified;
5 Scheidet man den Frevler vom König, erlangt dessen Thron Bestand durch Gerechtigkeit.	5 Remove the wicked from the presence of the king, and his throne is made firm through righteousness.
6 Rühme dich nicht vor dem König und stell dich nicht an den Platz der Großen;	6 Claim no honor in the king's presence, nor occupy the place of great men;
7 denn besser, man sagt zu dir: Rück hier herauf, als dass man dich nach unten setzt wegen eines Vornehmen. Was deine Augen sahen,	7 For it is better that you be told, "Come up closer!" than that you be humbled before the prince.
8 bring es nicht übereilt als Streitfall vor; denn was willst du später tun, wenn dein Nächster dich bloßstellt?	8 What your eyes have seen bring not forth hastily against an opponent; For what will you do later on when your neighbor puts you to shame?
9 Trag deinen Streit mit deinem Nächsten aus, doch verrate nicht das Geheimnis eines andern,	9 Discuss your case with your neighbor, but another man's secret do not disclose;
10 sonst wird dich schmähen, wer es hört, und dein Geschwätz wird auf dich zurückfallen.	10 Lest, hearing it, he reproach you, and your ill repute cease not.
11 Wie goldene Äpfel auf silbernen Schalen ist ein Wort, gesprochen zur rechten Zeit.	11 Like golden apples in silver settings are words spoken at the proper time.
12 Wie ein goldener Ring und Schmuck aus Feingold ist ein weiser Mahner für ein Ohr, das zuhört.	12 Like a golden earring, or a necklace of fine gold, is a wise reprover to an obedient ear.
13 Wie kühlender Schnee an einem Sommertag ist ein verlässlicher Bote für den, der ihn sendet; er erquickt die Seele seines Herrn.	13 Like the coolness of snow in the heat of the harvest is a faithful messenger for the one who sends him. (He refreshes the soul of his master.)
14 Aufziehende Wolken mit Wind, doch kein Regen, so ist ein Mann, der Versprechungen macht und nicht hält.	14 Like clouds and wind when no rain follows is the man who boastfully promises what he never gives.
15 Mit Geduld wird ein Vorgesetzter umgestimmt, sanfte Zunge bricht Knochen.	15 By patience is a ruler persuaded, and a soft tongue will break a bone.
16 Findest du Honig, iss nur, so viel dir bekommt, sonst wirst du ihn satt und erbrichst ihn.	16 If you find honey, eat only what you need, lest you become glutted with it and vomit it up.
17 Mach dich rar im Haus deines Nächsten, sonst wird er dich satt und verabscheut dich.	17 Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor's house, lest he have more than enough of you, and hate you.
18 Keule und Schwert und scharfer Pfeil: das ist einer, der falsch aussagt gegen seinen Nächsten.	18 Like a club, or a sword, or a sharp arrow, is the man who bears false witness against his neighbor.
19 Schlechter Zahn und stolpernder Fuß: der Verräter am Tag der Not.	19 Like an infected tooth or an unsteady foot is (dependence on) a faithless man in time of trouble.
20 Essig auf Laugensalz - (so ist,) wer Lieder singt vor einem missmutigen Herzen. [Wie die Motte am Kleid, der Wurm im Holz, so nagt der Kummer am Herzen des Menschen.]	20 Like a moth in clothing, or a maggot in wood, sorrow gnaws at the human heart.
21 Hat dein Feind Hunger, gib ihm zu essen, hat er Durst, gib ihm zu trinken;	21 If your enemy be hungry, give him food to eat, if he be thirsty, give him to drink;
22 so sammelst du glühende Kohlen auf sein Haupt und der Herr wird es dir vergelten.	22 For live coals you will heap on his head, and the LORD will vindicate you.
23 Der Nordwind bringt Regen, eine heimtückische Zunge zornige Gesichter.	23 The north wind brings rain, and a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.
24 Besser in einer Ecke des Daches wohnen als eine zänkische Frau im gemeinsamen Haus.	24 It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop than in a roomy house with a quarrelsome woman.
25 Kühles Wasser für eine durstige Kehle ist eine gute Nachricht aus fernem Land.	25 Like cool water to one faint from thirst is good news from a far country.
26 Ein getrübter Brunnen, ein verschütteter Quell ist ein Gerechter, der vor dem Frevler wankt.	26 Like a troubled fountain or a polluted spring is a just man who gives way before the wicked.
27 Zu viel Honig essen ist nicht gut: Ebenso spare mit ehrenden Worten!	27 To eat too much honey is not good; nor to seek honor after honor.
28 Eine Stadt mit eingerissener Mauer ist ein Mann, der sich nicht beherrscht.	28 Like an open city with no defenses is the man with no check on his feelings.
