VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
1 Non duplices sermonem auditus de revelatione sermonis absconditi :
et eris vere sine confusione,
et invenies gratiam in conspectu omnium hominum.
Ne pro his omnibus confundaris,
et ne accipias personam ut delinquas :
1 The fol owing things you should not be ashamed of, and do not sin from fear of what others think:
2 de lege Altissimi, et testamento,
et de judicio justificare impium,
2 of the Law of the Most High or of the covenant, of a verdict that acquits the godless,
3 de verbo sociorum et viatorum,
et de datione hæreditatis amicorum,
3 of keeping accounts with a travelling companion, of settling property on your friends,
4 de æqualitate stateræ et ponderum,
de acquisitione multorum et paucorum,
4 of being accurate over scales and weights, of making small and large profits,
5 de corruptione emptionis et negotiatorum,
et de multa disciplina filiorum,
et servo pessimo latus sanguinare.
5 of gaining from commercial transactions, of disciplining your children strictly, of lashing a wicked slavetill you draw blood.
6 Super mulierem nequam bonum est signum.
6 With an interfering wife, it is as wel to use your seal, and where there are many hands, lock things up.
7 Ubi manus multæ sunt, claude :
et quodcumque trades, numera et appende :
datum vero et acceptum omne describe.
7 Whatever stores you issue, do it by number and weight, spendings and takings, put everything inwriting.
8 De disciplina insensati et fatui,
et de senioribus qui judicantur ab adolescentibus :
et eris eruditus in omnibus,
et probabilis in conspectu omnium vivorum.
8 Do not be ashamed to correct a stupid person or a fool, or an old dotard who bickers with youngpeople. Then you wil show yourself real y educated and win the approval of everyone.
9 Filia patris abscondita est vigilia,
et sollicitudo ejus aufert somnum :
ne forte in adolescentia sua adulta efficiatur,
et cum viro commorata odibilis fiat :
9 Unknown to her, a daughter keeps her father awake, the worry she gives him drives away his sleep: inher youth, in case she never marries, married, in case she should be disliked,
10 nequando polluatur in virginitate sua,
et in paternis suis gravida inveniatur :
ne forte cum viro commorata transgrediatur,
aut certe sterilis efficiatur.
10 as a virgin, in case she should be defiled and found with child in her father's house, having a husband,in case she goes astray, married, in case she should be sterile!
11 Super filiam luxuriosam confirma custodiam,
nequando faciat te in opprobrium venire inimicis,
a detractione in civitate, et objectione plebis,
et confundat te in multitudine populi.
11 Your daughter is headstrong? Keep a sharp look-out that she does not make you the laughing-stock ofyour enemies, the talk of the town, the object of common gossip, and put you to public shame.
12 Omni homini noli intendere in specie,
et in medio mulierum noli commorari :
12 Do not stare at any man for his good looks, do not sit down with women;
13 de vestimentis enim procedit tinea,
et a muliere iniquitas viri.
13 for moth comes out of clothes, and woman's spite out of woman.
14 Melior est enim iniquitas viri quam mulier benefaciens,
et mulier confundens in opprobrium.
14 Better a man's spite than a woman's kindness: women give rise to shame and reproach.
15 Memor ero igitur operum Domini,
et quæ vidi annuntiabo.
In sermonibus Domini opera ejus.
15 Next, I shal remind you of the works of the Lord, and tel of what I have seen. By the words of the Lordhis works come into being and all creation obeys his wil .
16 Sol illuminans per omnia respexit,
et gloria Domini plenum est opus ejus.
16 The shining sun looks down on al things, and the work of the Lord is full of his glory.
17 Nonne Dominus fecit sanctos enarrare omnia mirabilia sua,
quæ confirmavit Dominus omnipotens stabiliri in gloria sua ?
17 The Lord has not granted the Holy Ones the power to tell of all his marvels which the Almighty Lordhas solidly constructed for the universe to stand firm in his glory.
18 Abyssum et cor hominum investigavit,
et in astutia eorum excogitavit.
18 He has fathomed both the abyss and the human heart and seen into their devious ways; for the MostHigh knows all there is to know and sees the signs of the times.
19 Cognovit enim Dominus omnem scientiam,
et inspexit in signum ævi,
annuntians quæ præterierunt et quæ superventura sunt,
revelans vestigia occultorum.
19 He declares what is past and what wil be, and reveals the trend of hidden things.
20 Non præterit illum omnis cogitatus,
et non abscondit se ab eo ullus sermo.
20 Not a thought escapes him, not a single word is hidden from him.
21 Magnalia sapientiæ suæ decoravit,
qui est ante sæculum et usque in sæculum :
neque adjectum est,
21 He has embellished the magnificent works of his wisdom, he is from everlasting to everlasting, nothingcan be added to him, nothing taken away, he needs no one's advice.
22 neque minuitur,
et non eget alicujus consilio.
22 How lovely, all his works, how dazzling to the eye!
23 Quam desiderabilia omnia opera ejus !
et tamquam scintilla quæ est considerare !
23 They all live and last for ever, and, whatever the circumstances, al obey.
24 Omnia hæc vivunt, et manent in sæculum,
et in omni necessitate omnia obaudiunt ei.
24 Al things go in pairs, by opposites, he has not made anything imperfect:
25 Omnia duplicia, unum contra unum,
et non fecit quidquam deesse.
25 one thing complements the excel ence of another. Who could ever grow tired of gazing at his glory?
26 Uniuscujusque confirmavit bona :
et quis satiabitur videns gloriam ejus ?
