1 Eravi un uomo della setta de' Farisei, chiamato Nicodemo, de' principali tra' Giudei.	1 There was one of the Pharisees called Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews,
2 Questi andò di notte tempo da Gesù, e gli disse: Maestro, noi conosciamo, che da Dio se' stato mandato a insegnare: imperocché nessuno può fare que' prodigj, che fai tu, se non ha Dio con se.	2 who came to Jesus by night and said, 'Rabbi, we know that you have come from God as a teacher; forno one could perform the signs that you do unless God were with him.'
3 Rispose Gesù, e dissegli: In verità, in verità ti dico, chiunque non rinascerà da capo, non può vedere il regno di Dio.	3 Jesus answered: In al truth I tel you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born fromabove.
4 Dissegli Nicodemo: Come mai può un uomo rinascere, quando sia vecchio? Può egli forse rientrar di nuovo nel sen di sua madre, e rinascere.	4 Nicodemus said, 'How can anyone who is already old be born? Is it possible to go back into the wombagain and be born?'
5 Gli rispose Gesù: In verità, in verità io ti dico, chi non rinascerà per mezzo dell'acqua, e dello Spirito santo, non può entrare nel regno di Dio.	5 Jesus replied: In al truth I tel you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born throughwater and the Spirit;
6 Quello, che è generato dalla carne, è carne: e quello, che è generato dallo spirito, è spirito.	6 what is born of human nature is human; what is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Non ti meravigliare, se ti ho detto: Bisogna, che voi nasciate da capo.	7 Do not be surprised when I say: You must be born from above.
8 Lo spirito spira dove vuole: e il suono ne odi, ma non sai, donde venga, né dove vada: cosi addiviene a chiunque è nato di spirito.	8 The wind blows where it pleases; you can hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from orwhere it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.
9 Rispose Nicodemo, e dissegli: Come mai può esser questo?	9 'How is that possible?' asked Nicodemus.
10 Rispose Gesù, e dissegli: Tu sei in Israele maestro, e non intendi queste cose?	10 Jesus replied, 'You are the Teacher of Israel, and you do not know these things!
11 In verità, in verità ti dico, che noi parliamo di quel, che sappiamo, e attestiamo quello, che abbiam veduto, e voi non date retta alla nostra asserzione.	11 'In al truth I tel you, we speak only about what we know and witness only to what we have seen and yet you people reject our evidence.
12 Se vi ho parlato di cose della terra, e non mi credete: come mi crederete, se vi parlerò di cose del cielo.	12 If you do not believe me when I speak to you about earthly things, how wil you believe me when Ispeak to you about heavenly things?
13 Or nissuno discese in cielo, fuorichè colui, che è disceso dal cielo, il Figliuolo dell'uomo, che sta nel cielo.	13 No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven, the Son of man;
14 E siccome Mosè innalzò nel deserto il serpente; nella stessa guisa fa d'uopo, che sia innalzato il Figliuolo dell'uomo.	14 as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up
15 Affinchè chiunque in lui crede, non perisca; ma abbia la vita eterna.	15 so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.
16 Imperocché Dio ha talmente amato il mondo, che ha dato il Figliuol suo unigenito, affinchè chiunque in lui creda, non perisca; ma abbia la vita eterna.	16 For this is how God loved the world: he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him maynot perish but may have eternal life.
17 Conciossiachè non ha Dio mandato il Figliuol suo al mondo per dannare il mondo; ma affinchè per mezzo di esso il mondo si salvi.	17 For God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but so that through him the world might besaved.
18 Chi in lui crede, non è condannato: ma chi non crede, è stato già condannato; perché non crede nel nome dell'unigenito Figliuol di Dio.	18 No one who believes in him wil be judged; but whoever does not believe is judged already, becausethat person does not believe in the Name of God's only Son.
19 E la condannazione sta in questo: che venne al mondo la luce, e gli uomini amaron meglio le tenebre, che la luce: perché le opere loro eran malvagge.	19 And the judgement is this: though the light has come into the world people have preferred darkness tothe light because their deeds were evil.
20 Imperocché chi fa male, odia la luce, e non si acosta alla luce, affinchè non vengano riprese le opere sue.	20 And indeed, everybody who does wrong hates the light and avoids it, to prevent his actions from beingshown up;
21 Chi poi opera secondo la verità, si accosta alla luce, affinchè manifeste rendansi le opere sue; perché sono fatte secondo Dio.	21 but whoever does the truth comes out into the light, so that what he is doing may plainly appear asdone in God.'
22 Andò dipoi Gesù co' suoi discepoli nella Giudea: e ivi si trattenne con essi, e battezzava.	22 After this, Jesus went with his disciples into the Judaean countryside and stayed with them there andbaptised.
23 E Giovanni ancora stava battezzando in Ennon vicino a Salim; perchè quivi vi erano molte acque, e la gente vi concorreva, ed erano battezzati.	23 John also was baptising at Aenon near Salim, where there was plenty of water, and people were goingthere and were being baptised.
24 Imperocché non era ancora Giovanni stato messo in prigione.	24 For John had not yet been put in prison.
25 E nacque disputa tra i discepoli di Giovanni, e i Giudei intorno alla purificazione.	25 Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew about purification,
26 E andarono da Giovanni, e gli dissero: Maestro, colui, che era teco di là dal Giordano, cui tu rendesti testimonianza, ecco, che questi battezza, e tutti vanno a lui.	26 so they went to John and said, 'Rabbi, the man who was with you on the far side of the Jordan, theman to whom you bore witness, is baptising now, and everyone is going to him.'
27 Rispose Giovanni, e disse: Non può l'uomo aver cos' alcuna, se non gli vien data dal cielo.	27 John replied: 'No one can have anything except what is given him from heaven.
28 Voi stessi mi siete testimoni, come io dissi: Non son io il Cristo, ma sono stato mandato a precederlo.	28 'You yourselves can bear me out. I said, "I am not the Christ; I am the one who has been sent to go infront of him."
29 Sposo è quegli, che ha la sposa: ma l'amico dello sposo, che sta in piedi a udirlo, si riempie di gaudio alla voce dello sposo. Tal gaudio adunque proprio di me lo ho io compiutamente.	29 'It is the bridegroom who has the bride; and yet the bridegroom's friend, who stands there and listensto him, is fil ed with joy at the bridegroom's voice. This is the joy I feel, and it is complete.
30 Quegli dee crescere, io essere abbassato.	30 He must grow greater, I must grow less.
31 Quegli, che vien di lassù è sopra tutti. E chi vien dalla terra, alla terra appartiene, e parla della terra. Colui, che vien dal cielo, è sopra tutti.	31 He who comes from above is above al others; he who is of the earth is earthly himself and speaks inan earthly way. He who comes from heaven
32 Ed egli attesta cose, che ha vedute, e udite: e nissuno presta fede alla sua asserzione.	32 bears witness to the things he has seen and heard, but his testimony is not accepted by anybody;
33 Ma chiunque ha aderito a ciò che egli attesta, depone, che Dio è verace.	33 though anyone who does accept his testimony is attesting that God is true,
34 Imperocché quegli, che da Dio è stato mandato, parla parole di Dio: conciossiachè non gli da Iddio lo spirito con misura.	34 since he whom God has sent speaks God's own words, for God gives him the Spirit without reserve.
35 Il Padre ama il Figliuolo: e nelle sue mani ha poste le cose tutte.	35 The Father loves the Son and has entrusted everything to his hands.
36 Chi crede nel Figliuolo, ha la vita eterna: ma chi niega fede al Figliuolo, non vedrà la vita; ma sta sopra di lui l'ira di Dio.	36 Anyone who believes in the Son has eternal life, but anyone who refuses to believe in the Son willnever see life: God's retribution hangs over him.'
