| 3 Issacar, Zabulon e Beniamino; | 3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. |

| 5 Tutte le persone discese da Giacobbe ammontavano a settanta; Giuseppe poi era già in Egitto. | 5 All the offspring of Jacob were seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt. |

| 8 Ma sorto in Egitto un nuovo re che nulla sapeva di Giuseppe, | 8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. |
| 9 disse al suo popolo: « Ecco, il popolo dei figli d'Israele è numeroso e più forte di noi. | 9 And he said to his people, "Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. |
| 10 Venite, opprimiamolo con astuzia, perché non si moltiplichi, e, in caso di guerra, unendosi ai nostri nemici, non ci vinca e poi se ne vada da questo paese ». | 10 Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war befall us, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land." |
| 11 Stabilì adunque sopra di loro dei soprastanti ai lavori, affinchè li caricassero di pesi; ed essi edificarono a Faraone le città dei tabernacoli: Pitoni e Ramesses. | 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens; and they built for Pharaoh store-cities, Pithom and Ra-amses. |
| 12 Ma quanto più erano oppressi, tanto più moltiplicavano e crescevano, | 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel. |
| 13 Allora gli Egiziani presero in avversione i figli d'Israele, li afflissero con insulti, | 13 So they made the people of Israel serve with rigor, |
| 14 resero loro amara la vita con duri lavori di argilla e di mattoni, e con ogni specie di servitù li opprimevano nei lavori dei campi. | 14 and made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field; in all their work they made them serve with rigor. |
| 15 Il re inoltre parlò alle levatrici degli Ebrei, delle quali una si chiamava Sefora e l'altra Fua, | 15 Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, |
| 16 e diede loro questo comando: « Quando assisterete le donne ebree, e verrà il tempo del parto, se è un maschio, uccidetelo, se è una femmina, lasciatela vivere». | 16 "When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, she shall live." |
| 17 Ma le levatrici, temendo Dio, non fecero secondo l'ordine del re d'Egitto, ma conservavano i maschi. | 17 But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live. |
| 18 Allora il re d'Egitto chiamò le levatrici e disse loro: « Che intendete di fare, lasciando vivere i bambini? » | 18 So the king of Egypt called the midwives, and said to them, "Why have you done this, and let the male children live?" |
| 19 Esse risposero: « Le donne ebree non sono come le egiziane; esse sanno far da levatrici da sè nei loro parti, e prima che arriviamo noi ad assisterle, han già partorito ». | 19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and are delivered before the midwife comes to them." |
| 20 Dio poi fece del bene alle levatrici: e il popolo divenne numeroso e oltremodo potente; | 20 So God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied and grew very strong. |
| 21 Dio, siccome le levatrici lo temettero, edificò loro delle case. | 21 And because the midwives feared God he gave them families. |
| 22 Faraone allora diede a tutto il suo popolo quest'ordine: « Gettate nel fiume tutti i maschi che nasceranno, e lasciate vivere soltanto le femmine ». | 22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, "Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live." |
