BIBBIA TINTORI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Questi sono i nomi dei figlioli d'Israele, i quali, ciascuno colla propria famiglia, entrarono con Giacobbe in Egitto:	1 These are the names of the Israelites who went with Jacob to Egypt, each of them went with his family:
2 Ruben, Simeone, Levi e Giuda;	2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah,
3 Issacar, Zabulon e Beniamino;	3 Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin,
4 Dan, Nefsali, Gad e Aser.	4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
5 Tutte le persone discese da Giacobbe ammontavano a settanta; Giuseppe poi era già in Egitto.	5 In all, the descendants of Jacob numbered seventy persons. Joseph was in Egypt already.
6 Dopo la morte di lui, dei suoi fratelli e di tutta quella generazione,	6 Then Joseph died, and his brothers, and all that generation.
7 I figli d'Israele crebbero e si moltiplicarono oltremodo prolificando, e divenuti molto potenti, riempirono quella terra.	7 But the Israelites were fruitful and prolific; they became so numerous and powerful that eventually thewhole land was ful of them.
8 Ma sorto in Egitto un nuovo re che nulla sapeva di Giuseppe,	8 Then there came to power in Egypt a new king who had never heard of Joseph.
9 disse al suo popolo: « Ecco, il popolo dei figli d'Israele è numeroso e più forte di noi.	9 'Look,' he said to his people, 'the Israelites are now more numerous and stronger than we are.
10 Venite, opprimiamolo con astuzia, perché non si moltiplichi, e, in caso di guerra, unendosi ai nostri nemici, non ci vinca e poi se ne vada da questo paese ».	10 We must take precautions to stop them from increasing any further, or if war should break out, theymight join the ranks of our enemies. They might take arms against us and then escape from the country.'
11 Stabilì adunque sopra di loro dei soprastanti ai lavori, affinchè li caricassero di pesi; ed essi edificarono a Faraone le città dei tabernacoli: Pitoni e Ramesses.	11 Accordingly they put taskmasters over the Israelites to wear them down by forced labour. In this waythey built the store-cities of Pithom and Rameses for Pharaoh.
12 Ma quanto più erano oppressi, tanto più moltiplicavano e crescevano,	12 But the harder their lives were made, the more they increased and spread, until people came to fearthe Israelites.
13 Allora gli Egiziani presero in avversione i figli d'Israele, li afflissero con insulti,	13 So the Egyptians gave them no mercy in the demands they made,
14 resero loro amara la vita con duri lavori di argilla e di mattoni, e con ogni specie di servitù li opprimevano nei lavori dei campi.	14 making their lives miserable with hard labour: with digging clay, making bricks, doing various kinds offield -- work -- al sorts of labour that they imposed on them without mercy.
15 Il re inoltre parlò alle levatrici degli Ebrei, delle quali una si chiamava Sefora e l'altra Fua,	15 The king of Egypt then spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was cal ed Shiphrah, and theother Puah.
16 e diede loro questo comando: « Quando assisterete le donne ebree, e verrà il tempo del parto, se è un maschio, uccidetelo, se è una femmina, lasciatela vivere».	16 'When you attend Hebrew women in childbirth,' he said, 'look at the two stones. If it is a boy, kil him; ifa girl, let her live.'
17 Ma le levatrici, temendo Dio, non fecero secondo l'ordine del re d'Egitto, ma conservavano i maschi.	17 But the midwives were God-fearing women and did not obey the orders of the king of Egypt, butal owed the boys to live.
18 Allora il re d'Egitto chiamò le levatrici e disse loro: « Che in tendete di fare, lasciando vivere i bambini? »	18 So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and said to them, 'What do you mean by al owing theboys to live?'
19 Esse risposero: « Le donne ebree non sono come le egiziane; esse sanno far da levatrici da sè nei loro parti, e prima che arriviamo noi ad assisterle, han già partorito ».	19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, 'Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women, they are hardy and givebirth before the midwife can get to them.'
20 Dio poi fece del bene alle levatrici: e il popolo divenne numeroso e oltremodo potente;	20 For this, God was good to the midwives, and the people went on increasing and growing morepowerful;
21 Dio, siccome le levatrici lo temettero, edificò loro delle case.	21 and since the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.
22 Faraone allora diede a tutto il suo popolo quest'ordine: « Gettate nel fiume tutti i maschi che nasceranno, e lasciate vivere soltanto le femmine ».	22 Pharaoh then gave all his people this command: 'Throw every new-born boy into the river, but let allthe girls live.'
