Giuditta 9

1 Partiti che furono, Giuditta entrò nel suo oratorio, e, indossato il cilizio, sparsa di cenere la sua testa, si prostrò dinanzi al Signore e ad alta voce si mise a dire:	1 And when they were gone, Judith entered her place of prayer. And clothing herself with haircloth, she placed ashes on her head. And prostrating herself to the Lord, she cried out to the Lord, saying:
2 « Signore Dio del mio padre Simeone, a cui desti la spada per punire quegli stranieri che per infame passione avevan violata e oltraggiata turpemente una vergine,	2 “O Lord, God of my father Simeon, you gave him a sword to defend against foreigners, who stood out as violators by their defilement, and who uncovered the thigh of the virgin unto shame.
3 e abbandonasti le loro mogli ad esser rapite, le loro figlie alla schiavitù, tutte le loro spoglie in preda ai tuoi servi ardenti di zelo pel tuo onore, porgi aiuto, ti prego, o Signore Dio, a me vedova.	3 And you gave their wives into plunder, and their daughters into captivity, and all their spoils to be divided to the servants, who were zealous with your zeal. Bring help, I ask you, O Lord my God, to me, a widow.
4 Sei tu che hai fatte le antiche maraviglie, tu che hai fatto il disegno di quelle che loro seguono, e ciò fu perchè tu hai voluto.	4 For you have acted in the past, and you have decided one thing after another. And what you have willed, this too has happened.
5 Tutte le tue vie son preparate, i tuoi giudizi li hai fondati nella tua provvidenza.	5 For all your ways have been prepared, and you have placed your judgments within your providence.
6 Or volgi lo sguardo sopra il campo degli Assiri, come una volta ti degnasti volgerlo sopra il campo degli Egiziani, quando, confidando nei loro carri, nella loro cavalleria, nella moltitudine dei combattenti, correvano armati dietro ai tuoi servi.	6 Look upon the camp of the Assyrians now, just as you deigned to look upon the camp of the Egyptians, when their weapons rushed after your servants, trusting in their four-horse chariots, and in their horsemen, and in a multitude of warriors.
7 Ma tu gettasti uno sguardo sopra il loro campo e li misero sottosopra le tenebre;	7 But you gazed upon their camp, and darkness wearied them.
8 l'abisso arrestò i loro passi; le acque li ricoprirono.	8 The abyss took hold of their feet, and the waters covered them.
9 O Signore, avvenga lo stesso di costoro che confidano nella loro moltitudine, nei loro carri, nelle aste, negli scudi, nelle loro frecce e si gloriano nelle loro lance,	9 So may it be with these also, O Lord, who trust in their multitude, and in their swift chariots, and in their pikes, and in their shields, and in their arrows, and the glory in their lances.
10 senza sapere che tu sei Il nostro Dio, che fin ab antico stritoli le armate e che ti chiami il Signore.	10 And they do not know that you are our God, who crushes wars from the beginning, and the Lord is your name.
11 Come pel passato alza il tuo braccio, schiaccia la loro potenza colla tua potenza, davanti alla tua ira cada la forza di costoro che minacciano di violare le tue cose sante, di contaminare il Tabernacolo del tuo nome, di abbattere colla loro spada il corno del tuo altare.	11 Raise up your arm, just as from the beginning, and throw down their power by your power. Let their power fall, in their anger, for they promise themselves to violate your sanctuary, and to pollute the tabernacle of your name, and to cut down by their sword the horn of your altar.
12 Fa, o Signore, che per mezzo della sua stessa spada sia troncata la sua superbia,	12 Act, O Lord, so that his arrogance may be cut off with his own sword.
13 che egli sia preso al laccio dei suoi occhi fìssi su me, colpiscilo colle grazie delle mie labbra;	13 Let him be seized by the snare of his own eyes in my regard, and may you strike him by the attraction of my lips.
14 da' al mio spirito fermezza per disprezzarlo, forza per abbatterlo,	14 Give me constancy in my soul, so that I may hold him in contempt, and give me virtue, so that I may overthrow him.
15 e sarà un monumento pel tuo nome, che la mano d'una donna 1'abbia abbattuto.	15 For this will be a memorial to your name, when he will be overthrown by the hand of a woman.
16 Il tuo potere, o Signore, non sta nel numero, nè dipende dalle forze dei cavalli la tua volontà; fin da principio non ti piacquero i superbi e gradisti sempre la preghiera degli umili e dei mansueti.	16 For your power, O Lord, is not in numbers, nor is your will with the strength of horses, nor from the beginning have the arrogant been pleasing to you. But the pleas of the humble and the meek have always pleased you.
17 Dio dei cieli, creatore delle acque e Signore di tutte le creature, ascolta una miserabile che a te ricorre e tutto spera dalla tua misericordia.	17 O God of the heavens, Creator of the waters, and Lord of all creation, heed me, a miserable thing, pleading you and depending on your mercy.
18 Ricordati, o Signore, del tuo patto, metti le parole sulla mia bocca, fortifica nel mio cuore il mio proposito, affinchè la tua casa conservi sempre la sua santità,	18 Remember, O Lord, your covenant, and put your words in my mouth, and reinforce the plan in my heart, so that your house may continue with your sanctification,
19 e tutte le genti conoscano che tu sei Dio e che fuori di te non ve n'è altri ».	19 and so that all the nations may acknowledge that you are God, and there is no other beside you.”
