1 Partiti che furono, Giuditta entrò nel suo oratorio, e, indossato il cilizio, sparsa di cenere la sua testa, si prostrò dinanzi al Signore e ad alta voce si mise a dire:	1 Judith threw herself down prostrate, with ashes strewn upon her head, and wearing nothing over her sackcloth. While the incense was being offered in the temple of God in Jerusalem that evening, Judith prayed to the Lord with a loud voice:
2 « Signore Dio del mio padre Simeone, a cui desti la spada per punire quegli stranieri che per infame passione avevan violata e oltraggiata turpemente una vergine,	2 "Lord, God of my forefather Simeon! You put a sword into his hand to take revenge upon the foreigners who had immodestly loosened the maiden's girdle, shamefully exposed her thighs, and disgracefully violated her body. This they did, though you forbade it.
3 e abbandonasti le loro mogli ad esser rapite, le loro figlie alla schiavitù, tutte le loro spoglie in preda ai tuoi servi ardenti di zelo pel tuo onore, porgi aiuto, ti prego, o Signore Dio, a me vedova.	3 Therefore you had their rulers slaughtered; and you covered with their blood the bed in which they lay deceived, the same bed that had felt the shame of their own deceiving. You smote the slaves together with their princes, and the princes together with their servants.
4 Sei tu che hai fatte le antiche maraviglie, tu che hai fatto il disegno di quelle che loro seguono, e ciò fu perchè tu hai voluto.	4 Their wives you handed over to plunder, and their daughters to captivity; and all the spoils you divided among your favored sons, who burned with zeal for you, and in their abhorrence of the defilement of their kinswoman, called on you for help.
5 Tutte le tue vie son preparate, i tuoi giudizi li hai fondati nella tua provvidenza.	5 "O God, my God, hear me also, a widow. It is you who were the author of those events and of what preceded and followed them. The present, also, and the future you have planned. Whatever you devise comes into being;
6 Or volgi lo sguardo sopra il campo degli Assiri, come una volta ti degnasti volgerlo sopra il campo degli Egiziani, quando, confidando nei loro carri, nella loro cavalleria, nella moltitudine dei combattenti, correvano armati dietro ai tuoi servi.	6 the things you decide on come forward and say, 'Here we are!' All your ways are in readiness, and your judgment is made with foreknowledge.
7 Ma tu gettasti uno sguardo sopra il loro campo e li misero sottosopra le tenebre;	7 "Here are the Assyrians, a vast force, priding themselves on horse and rider, boasting of the power of their infantry, trusting in shield and spear, bow and sling. They do not know that
8 l'abisso arrestò i loro passi; le acque li ricoprirono.	8 " 'You, the Lord, crush warfare; Lord is your name. Shatter their strength in your might, and crush their force in your wrath; for they have resolved to profane your sanctuary, to defile the tent where your glorious name resides, and to overthrow with iron the horns of your altar.
9 O Signore, avvenga lo stesso di costoro che confidano nella loro moltitudine, nei loro carri, nelle aste, negli scudi, nelle loro frecce e si gloriano nelle loro lance,	9 See their pride, and send forth your wrath upon their heads. Give me, a widow, the strong hand to execute my plan.
10 senza sapere che tu sei Il nostro Dio, che fin ab antico stritoli le armate e che ti chiami il Signore.	10 With the guile of my lips, smite the slave together with the ruler, the ruler together with his servant; crush their pride by the hand of a woman.
11 Come pel passato alza il tuo braccio, schiaccia la loro potenza colla tua potenza, davanti alla tua ira cada la forza di costoro che minacciano di violare le tue cose sante, di contaminare il Tabernacolo del tuo nome, di abbattere colla loro spada il corno del tuo altare.	11 "Your strength is not in numbers, nor does your power depend upon stalwart men; but you are the God of the lowly, the helper of the oppressed, the supporter of the weak, the protector of the forsaken, the savior of those without hope.
12 Fa, o Signore, che per mezzo della sua stessa spada sia troncata la sua superbia,	12 "Please, please, God of my forefather, God of the heritage of Israel, Lord of heaven and earth, Creator of the waters, King of all you have created, hear my prayer!
13 che egli sia preso al laccio dei suoi occhi fìssi su me, colpiscilo colle grazie delle mie labbra;	13 Let my guileful speech bring wound and wale on those who have planned dire things against your covenant, your holy temple, Mount Zion, and the homes your children have inherited.
14 da' al mio spirito fermezza per disprezzarlo, forza per abbatterlo,	14 Let your whole nation and all the tribes know clearly that you are the god of all power and might, and that there is no other who protects the people of Israel but you alone."
15 e sarà un monumento pel tuo nome, che la mano d'una donna 1'abbia abbattuto.
16 Il tuo potere, o Signore, non sta nel numero, nè dipende dalle forze dei cavalli la tua volontà; fin da principio non ti piacquero i superbi e gradisti sempre la preghiera degli umili e dei mansueti.
17 Dio dei cieli, creatore delle acque e Signore di tutte le creature, ascolta una miserabile che a te ricorre e tutto spera dalla tua misericordia.
18 Ricordati, o Signore, del tuo patto, metti le parole sulla mia bocca, fortifica nel mio cuore il mio proposito, affinchè la tua casa conservi sempre la sua santità,
19 e tutte le genti conoscano che tu sei Dio e che fuori di te non ve n'è altri ».
