BIBBIA TINTORI	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Partiti che furono, Giuditta entrò nel suo oratorio, e, indossato il cilizio, sparsa di cenere la sua testa, si prostrò dinanzi al Signore e ad alta voce si mise a dire:	1 And when they were gone, Judith went into her oratory: and putting on haircloth, laid ashes on her head: and falling down prostrate before the Lord, she cried to the Lord, saying:
2 « Signore Dio del mio padre Simeone, a cui desti la spada per punire quegli stranieri che per infame passione avevan violata e oltraggiata turpemente una vergine,	2 O Lord God of my father Simeon, who gavest him a sword to execute vengeance against strangers, who had defiled by their uncleanness, and uncovered the virgin unto confusion:
3 e abbandonasti le loro mogli ad esser rapite, le loro figlie alla schiavitù, tutte le loro spoglie in preda ai tuoi servi ardenti di zelo pel tuo onore, porgi aiuto, ti prego, o Signore Dio, a me vedova.	3 And who gavest their wives to he made a prey, and their daughters into captivity: and all their spoils to be divided to thy servants, who were zealous with thy zeal: assist, I beseech thee, O Lord God, me a widow.
4 Sei tu che hai fatte le antiche maraviglie, tu che hai fatto il disegno di quelle che loro seguono, e ciò fu perchè tu hai voluto.	4 For thou hast done the things of old, and hast devised one thing after another: and what thou hast designed hath been done.
5 Tutte le tue vie son preparate, i tuoi giudizi li hai fondati nella tua provvidenza.	5 For all thy ways are prepared, and in thy providence thou hast placed thy judgments.
6 Or volgi lo sguardo sopra il campo degli Assiri, come una volta ti degnasti volgerlo sopra il campo degli Egiziani, quando, confidando nei loro carri, nella loro cavalleria, nella moltitudine dei combattenti, correvano armati dietro ai tuoi servi.	6 Look upon the camp of the Assyrians now, as thou wast pleased to look upon the camp of the Egyptians, when they pursued armed after thy servants, trusting in their chariots, and in their horsemen, and in a multitude of warriors.
7 Ma tu gettasti uno sguardo sopra il loro campo e li misero sottosopra le tenebre;	7 But thou lookedst over their camp, and darkness wearied them.
8 l'abisso arrestò i loro passi; le acque li ricoprirono.	8 The deep held their feet, and the waters overwhelmed them.
9 O Signore, avvenga lo stesso di costoro che confidano nella loro moltitudine, nei loro carri, nelle aste, negli scudi, nelle loro frecce e si gloriano nelle loro lance,	9 So may it be with these also, O Lord, who trust in their multitude, and in their chariots, and in their pikes, and in their shields, and in their arrows, and glory in their spears,
10 senza sapere che tu sei Il nostro Dio, che fin ab antico stritoli le armate e che ti chiami il Signore.	10 And know not that thou art our God, who destroyest wars from the beginning, and the Lord is thy name.
11 Come pel passato alza il tuo braccio, schiaccia la loro potenza colla tua potenza, davanti alla tua ira cada la forza di costoro che minacciano di violare le tue cose sante, di contaminare il Tabernacolo del tuo nome, di abbattere colla loro spada il corno del tuo altare.	11 Lift up thy arm as from the beginning, and crush their power with thy power: let their power fall in their wrath, who promise themselves to violate thy sanctuary, and defile the dwelling place of thy name, and to beat down with their sword the horn of thy altar.
12 Fa, o Signore, che per mezzo della sua stessa spada sia troncata la sua superbia,	12 Bring to pass, O Lord, that his pride may be cut off with his own sword.
13 che egli sia preso al laccio dei suoi occhi fìssi su me, colpiscilo colle grazie delle mie labbra;	13 Let him be caught in the net of his own eyes in my regard, and do thou strike him by the graces of the words of my lips.
14 da' al mio spirito fermezza per disprezzarlo, forza per abbatterlo,	14 Give me constancy in my mind, that I may despise him: and fortitude that I may overthrow him.
15 e sarà un monumento pel tuo nome, che la mano d'una donna 1'abbia abbattuto.	15 For this will be a glorious monument for thy name, when he shall fall by the hand of a woman.
16 Il tuo potere, o Signore, non sta nel numero, nè dipende dalle forze dei cavalli la tua volontà; fin da principio non ti piacquero i superbi e gradisti sempre la preghiera degli umili e dei mansueti.	16 For thy power, O Lord, is not in a multitude, nor is thy pleasure in the strength of horses, nor from the beginning have the proud been acceptable to thee: but the prayer of the humble and the meek hath always pleased thee.
17 Dio dei cieli, creatore delle acque e Signore di tutte le creature, ascolta una miserabile che a te ricorre e tutto spera dalla tua misericordia.	17 O God of the heavens, creator of the waters, and Lord of the whole creation, hear me a poor wretch, making supplication to thee, and presuming of thy mercy.
18 Ricordati, o Signore, del tuo patto, metti le parole sulla mia bocca, fortifica nel mio cuore il mio proposito, affinchè la tua casa conservi sempre la sua santità,	18 Remember, O Lord, thy covenant, and put thou words in my mouth, and strengthen the resolution in my heart, that thy house may continue in thy holiness:
19 e tutte le genti conoscano che tu sei Dio e che fuori di te non ve n'è altri ».	19 And all nations may acknowledge that thou art God, and there is no other besides thee.
